Top Local Tips for Paris
Louvre Enter the Louvre from the Metro stop! It is much quicker and you can buy a Paris Pass right there.
Getting around Get familiar with the Metro system as this is quick and cheap
Watch the Metro! There are people watching you all the time - it was almost like being home in good old South Africa! At one stage we were catching a train, and came across a family battling to use their Paris Visite Passes. We couldn't help them, and the station was very quiet (don't know why, it was the middle of the day, and within the 3rd zone). They couldn't speak English, so we left them to it. It was only afterwards my husband mentioned to me the two guys across the passageway fiddling with a map. At the time it didn't appear suspicious (we wouldn't have left the family alone if it had), but thinking about it we wondered if the two guys were waiting for us to go, pretend to help the family (two v. young children) and make off with what they could f their belongings. I hope we are wrong, and it was all innocent, but remembering the look one of them gave us as we arrived, I think we were on the nail. My conscience does bother me on this one, but it's easy to say that in hindsight.

There is a "secure room" in the hotel that you can leave your baggage after you check out. We did this and were assured that it was safe.We went away sight seeing for the day.On returning to the hotel my girlfriends suitcase was missing. In our eyes stolen but the hotel took a different view they said it was "misplaced".Naiviely we left our passports in suitcase thinking that it would be safer in their luggage room than in our pockets whilst sightseeing, as most attractions have signs warning of pickpockets.
this led to us being unable to make our flight. We reviewed the security footage of hotel cameras. Not the best but clear enough to make out that no one had visably taken it from the room. The manager eventually arrived briefly and left as soon as she arrived.her only input was to ask and check our room to see that we didnt leave it behind in it. We got no assistance from the hotel when trying to contact the police or embassy in relation to this matter even though we asked them numerous time to do this for us. They were even wondering why we might want to contact the embassy or the police. The only time they were helpful was when we enquired about a room for another night. The receptionist said that she would do all she could and got us a good deal of 100 for the night incl breakfast considering it was in their hotel under their watchful eye that the bag was stolen i say this was 100 too much.
The police station we eventually found no thanks to the helpful french people we met was a good distance away.
Luckly we both had our mobilephones and were able to contact family at home in Ireland to help us find numbers. That night after returning from our trip to the Police station and embassy, the night porter that was on had not even heard of our predicamt. It is a big bit of news not to have mentioned it so I doubt that new pocedures will have been put into place for other guests baggage.
The only thing to be said from this experience is the the staff in the Embassy of Ireland in Paris were very helpful, the staff of Ryanair changed flights without any problems and the police were very thorough in the taking of our statements.
