Top Local Tips for Paris
Be VERY CAREFUL if you choose to use the subway We had two bad experiences on the subway, which surprised me (even though we had been warned about crime in Europe). FIrst, my camera was stolen by an organized group who created a distraction on a swervy ride to Montmarte in the early evening. I wasn't even aware it was gone until I got off the second train. Then, one afternoon my husband got off at one stop and I continued on to go shopping at BHV. The train was crowded and as I stood in the aisle, a disgusting swarthy-looking man pressed himself up against me! I kept moving away (which was impossible given the people all around). Finally when I could get away I turned to him and exclaimed, "Pardon!!" Nothing like this ever happened to me in other subway systems - and I've ridden alone on the NYC metro. The RER seemed much safer, by the way. My advice to others: dress like the homeless; wear only black or gray and try to look like a Parisian. I had less trouble when I blended in.
public transportation Take the RER for faster service. The subway doors close quite quickly. Pay attention when getting off and on so you don't get stuck in the door or miss your stop. If you will be there at least four days, buy a week pass for the subway and bus. Saves alot of time and hassle.
