A Room with a view!

The romance of the Hotel Esmeralda made it a perfect place to stay for our honeymoon. The view, of Notre Dame, was worth the money on its own and the quirky, historic hotel and pleasant staff made it all the better. Our room was unusual and old fashioned, with a tiny bathroom and you felt cut off from the modern world in the little room without a telly! It was pretty cheap, especially for the location and a brilliant base for getting all around Paris. It was the perfect place to be just us, and Paris! I would definitely recommend it.

Having stopped there for the last 3 years, we found you need to be room selective. The staff and madam owner are as the hotel addictive.
There is a fantastic bar in the middle of three just around the corner.
Go - stay - enjoy - but not in August or we may not be able to get in!

My sister and I had a room overlooking Notre Dame and the park. We loved the charm and the historical feeling. Staff was very helpful. I would stay there again.

We absolutely loved the Esmeralda! We loved the lcoation, the rooms were quaint and unique, and the view of the park and Notre Dame were just mesmerizing. I hope some day to go back...and get my same room on the top floor of the Esmeralda.....

Was so impressed by its history alone. A great winding staircase takes you to your rooms (so be prepared for that). Woke up to the bells of Notre Dame right next door. Continental breakfast was excellent. Management did their best to speak English. Would certainly stay there again for a budget minded vacation.

Oh man, be ready for some seriously eccentric touches at this place! But it's right downtown, clean and cheap - around 50 Cdn if I remember right.... We even had a view of Notre Dame from our window! I'd totally go there again.

Top Local Tips for Paris

Saftey for ladies traveling alone I have grown up in big cities and traveled the world alone. I LOVED paris but I have never felt more unsafe there. I am pale, have red hair and am curvy. This lead to being followed three different times to the point where once I had to hide in a store behind a clothes rack. The shoppe owner was so kind as to let me out the merchants entrance. My suggestions: 1) if you can travel with someone do so. 2) learn some "french" phrases for "leave me the ___ alone" THEY WORK. 3) if you feel unsafe stick to the touristy places with family -- they wont bother you there. 4) Guard yourself on the subway I witnessed pick pockets and men standing much too close unnecessarily. Like I said I have traveled the world alone -- this is the only place I had to really be on guard.

Time and place are everything Do as the French do. Eat set menus, eat lunch time, don't be afraid to ask for tap water with your wine and look for the place just away from tourist attractions which seems full - they survive on their food quality, not their location!

The gargoyles Just across the road is, of course, Notre Dame, and for just €4.80 (for under 25s, around €7 for others) you can head up the 480 stairs to see the gargoyles and bells right up close and personal. It was, for me, better than the Tour Effiel with an amazing panoramic view of the city and the world famous statues mere inches away rather than on a postcard on a rack. The stairs seem daunting, but we low and not actually as hard as coming out of the Paris catacombs, so don't let them put you off! Wrap up warm as it is quite blustery up at the top!
