I'd like to extend thanks to the staff of the Castex Hotel. My brother and I travelled to Paris recently. He picked the hotel based on location and other travelers' ratings. We weren't disappointed to say the least. The location of the hotel is perfect for people who like to get around on foot or by Metro. It was very convenient for dining and entertainment later in the evening, which was a huge plus. The location adjacent to the Place des Voges and le Bastille is unbeatable, plus I like to walk and walked as far as Musee d'Orsay and everywhere in between. The staff was gracious, the room clean, the hotel quiet. In all likelihood I won't look for another hotel next time, I'll book here first. If you are looking for American style hotel accomodations stay at the airport. If you are looking for a traditional European style hotel in a perfect location, with very nice accomodations, this is a great place. And better still if you're happy on foot or travel by Metro. Have fun.

First of all this hotel is ok, despite the review title. But thats just all that it is ok. Its nothing more or less.
You get a clean (small) room where you can sleep. Which is where most people use the hotel for. If the hotel would have been 40-50 euro cheaper I would have given it top marks but I find 120 euro per night a little bit to much for what you get. And that was a special deal with the 4 night for free. Which made it better, but iam writing this review based on the normal price which is 140 euro per night for a double room.
I have to say I have not been to another hotel in paris recently so I dont know what other hotels offer for less money.
So on the positive side: clean rooms, friendly english speaking staff.
Negative: the price

Further more, about the location, its good being close to a metro station but saying that, this will go for any other hotel in paris close to a metro station. Which is more important its in the marais neighbourhood which is quite nice with its restaurants and bars, but you have to know how to find them. There are a lot of tourist bars and restaurants which offer nothing special, but it you know where to look there are very interresting places there.

Some other comments on the hotel, which I believe are just incedents, I asked for a room with bath and only got shower, second the room was quite hot and had to use airco to cool it down, and that during winter!!! Since I dont use airco during night, the room was quite hot during the night.

very friendly, accomodating hotel

Would highly recommend this hotel. In a very nice location in 4e arrod, near 3e Marias area (this is trendy, nightlife area). Close to Bastille metro (2 blocks). Tons of area cafes, restaurants, bakeries etc. Staff very very kind and accomodating (this can be a challenge sometimes for Americans who don't speak French). Rooms completely updated, with A/C, and very clean. Bathrooms updated, somewhat spacious and above average compared to other hotels. Hotel price somewhat expensive, but worth it when you consider location and ammenities. Would definitely stay here again.

Lovely, lovely hotel

My partner and myself have just returned after spending a week at the Castex.
Great location ( easy access to Metro, in the heart of the Marais and within walking distance of Notre Dame etc )
Very helpful and friendly staff ( we had a small problem with the shower in our room so they simply offered us any other vacant room in the hotel)
Clean and comfortable ( the chambermaids even washed the cups we took with us for our daily intake of tea and coffee )
We also got a free night - summer offer of sx nights for the price of five.
We wouldn't hesitate to return to the Castex

Great Location

Just returned from a stay at the Castex in Paris. It is really tiny, but was very clean and was in a great location (close to Place de la Bastille in the 4th arrondesment). The staff was pretty nice and helpful. I would stay there again.

Spotless and very cute

My husband and I stayed in the Castex Hotel Easter 2004. The hotel is in a relatively quiet back street of a lively, very French area. The Bastille monument is just a minutes walk from the hotel as are a vast array of restaurants, patisseries, cafes and bars. The area feels very safe and lively on a night...not at all seedy.

The hotel was recently renovated (inside not outside so don't panic as you arrive). Beatiful/simple decoration inside. The rooms are small (i've heard this is the norm in Paris) but spotlessly clean and well appointed for a weekend stay. The staff are friendly and the breakfast(not included) is very satisfying. All in all a great find!

Cozy at the Castex

The Castex is a convenient place to stay in the Marais area of Paris.
My girlfriend and I had cute single rooms on the 5th floor that were extremely small but very nice. The rooms were in a hallway with a door that closed off to the elevator area so that we were able to leave our room doors open if we wanted to talk and visit. The rooms were very clean with a great bathroom and large bathtub. The bed was comfy and the window opened to a gorgeous view of Paris rooftops and the beautiful night sky. The breakfast was very good and well worth the price, cereal, fresh breads, butter, jam, pate, yoghurt, cheese, juice, milk, coffe, tea and hot chocolate mix. The front desk was very accomodating and had good restaurant suggestions. I would highly recommend the Italian Restaurant across the street. I would also recommend a small bakery around the block on the Rue du Petit Music, and there is even a coin laundry acroos from the bakery. The metro stops, the Bastille or Sully Morland and easy to get to. This hotel is not particularly fancy, but is an excellent value in a great location.
The staff is friendly and helpful. This was my third stay at the Castex and I will happily stay there again.

It is fab...

We visited the Castex Hotel in February this year. You can not beat the location, it is located on a fairly quiet street but is only minutes away from a lively square, filled with restaurants, bars & shops. Notre Dame is also within a 5 mins walk. Rooms were very Parisian (maybe a touch small, but very clean with a huge king sized bed). Bathroom well equipped and modern. Loved it, would definitely recommend to anyone.

Lovely room

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here for 7 days in January after travelling the south of France for 10 days. Compared to all the other hotels we stayed in this was definitely the nicest place of all. The rooms are very small but you dont spend enough time in them for this to be a problem. I found the staff to be very helpful but it would depend on who was on for that day. It is a fantastic position and I enjoyed staying there as the decor was in true french style. The rooms were very clean and I would highly recommend it.

Nothing to write home about

We visited Paris over New Year's week and chose the Castex based on the reviews here. I work at a 4 star hotel in NYC and was expecting much more based on what was said about the place. We arrived and were taken to a room directly behind the check-in desk, next to the luggage closet (no welcome at all from the girl behind the desk). I immidiately asked for a different room... She rummaged through papers and told me she would have something else later. When we returned we were given a room on the first floor with a view of the street... much better. Overall the room was small, but clean and new. Past check-in, nothing exciting happened. The same girl worked in the lobby every day. Every question that we asked was answered with "I don't know." I expected a bit more based on what I read here. In addition, the hotel is much smaller then the pictures on the website make it seem. The lobby area is the size of a dining room, and it's not really condusive to sitting and enjoying it since the check-in desk is literally on top of the chairs there.
However, the one true positive is the location. You can basically walk anywhere in Paris from the hotel. The river is a 5 minute walk and the metro is 2 blocks away. One last thought... I compared tons of hotels in the 3 star category from the websites. When comparing the pictures to what you really get, none of them are up to par. The Castex was supposed to be better on the service front, but it was not. Paris was fantastic... definately go, but just don't have high expectations for your hotel!

Very nice place to stay.

Very nice place to stay in Paris. Close to the metro station and the Opera. The area is quiet and clean, as well as the hotel itself. The staff was very helpful and polite. The room was not particulary big, but enough for two. There is a digital safe in the room. The bathroom was clean. I would personally recommend to take the room in the main building, because there were a hole under the door in the room we were proposed initially (it is in the backyard, btw it is bigger than that we took eventually). The heating was (in October) weak (we had to leave the windows closed all the day, otherwise it was too cold in the evenings). Anyway I would recommend this place for a stay in Paris.

Top Local Tips for Paris

Things that are open on Christmas day Pompidou museum is open on Christmas day and was totally uncrowded. Couldn't find any shops open, but there were enough restaurants open to not go hungry in the left bank area.

Visiting the Louvre I bought my ticket a day in advance at the Virgin Record store in the underground shopping plaza connected to the Louvre. This was so that I wouldn't have to wait in two lines, one to enter the building and another to buy my ticket. I got there early, around 9am. There was no line whatsoever, (Maybe about 5 people) to get in to the museum, and not crowded at all. Not sure if this is always the case, but I would definitely recommend getting there early. Later on in the day it was completely packed with people. Also, when you arrive, if its not crowded, head straight for the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. They are the star attractions and get really crowded later in the day. Incredible museum though. Obviously a must see for museum and art lovers!!

Arriving by Metro (Bastille Station) Its a bit disorienting when you exit the Metro. Look for St. Antoine exit. When you come up the escalator, you are facing St. Antoine. Cross the street to get to other side then turn right. Continue down St. Antoine for two blocks. Look for rue Castex and turn left. You will see the hotel sign.
