Confusing reservation requirements = charged for room I didn't use

My husband and I tried to book a room at this hotel for our honeymoon. I contacted the hotel through its website and used its online form to request a reservation. In response, I received an e-mail response from the hotel that "proposed" a reservation and required that I "confirm" the reservation with my credit card information.

I submitted my credit card info. So far, so good, right? Wrong.

The hotel then sent me an e-mail telling methat it had not received my credit card info. I responded by telling them I'd already sent my info and asking them if they had received it. They replied no, but "may be in few times", which I took to mean there might be some delay, and then told me that, when it received the information, it would "reconfirm" my reservation.

I didn't hear from the Hotel again before I left for my trip. After several days, I got fed up and made other arrangements. Unfortunately, the hotel had received my credit card info, after all, and charged me for one night's stay as a "no show." Upon my return, I found e-mails sent by the hotel the night before we had originally intended to stay there, asking me to "reconfirm" my reservation and telling me it would "reconfirm" my reservation in return.

Needless to say, I disputed the charges with my credit card company, and after a lengthy process was told the hotel's bank denied my request. So I'm out almost two hundred bucks (plus the cost of the other room), all for a room I didn't use.

From now on, this is the only hotel for us

I feel sorry for the visitor who stayed here June 7. Of course the room is tiny. Every room in Paris is tiny! One needs to rethink space. Our room was positively charming, even with the tiny balcony and bathtub without the curtain (come on! Use a little imagination!). For €152 we had two beds placed together and from which we could see the roofs of the buildings across. The owners are not only charming but extremely helpful. Monsieur le fils (the son) phoned Bordeaux to reconfirm car rental agreements. On the day we checked out, he took both our suitcases and placed them in the trunk of the taxi which he had ordered. The breakfast is almost a work of art. You will be served freshly squeezed orange juice and house made jams (strawberry and apricot), cheeses, yoghurt, superb coffee, a meat spread, fresh fruit, plus the requisite breads. For €9.80, this is a steal. The Beaumarchais motifs abound, from the lobby to the rooms. I spent considerable time reading from historical copies of The Marriage of Figaro, generously framed on walls. If all this wasn't enough, the location can't be beat. Get yourself a map of Paris and look for rue Vieille du Temple. For a very reasonable meal, try the Corsican restaurant l'Alivi around the corner. You will be an instant convert. So just remember: think small--don't bring those heavy, overloaded suitcases that you don't need. Try a little humility and be pleased that you have been chosen to stay in such an establishment. For us, there is now only one hotel we will ever consider: Caron de Beaumarchais.

Charm and Warmth at Caron Beaumarchais

My wife and I spent 8 nights at the Hotel Caron Beaumarchais located in the Marais district during the month of April. We had a wonderful time because the staff was so warm and helpful. The room was decorated with great taste, the bathroom was modern, and the design of the room was quite practical. The Marais area is located in a section that is convenient to most areas of interest by foot or metro. It has a variety of shops, resturants and boulangeries all of which will satisfy your tastes. We will return to Paris as we have many times before but the next time we will return to the Caron Beaumarchais. We recommend it highly.

I would never go back

We spent 5 nights here. On arrival when I sat on the bed it was wet. I almost threw up. The previous guest had an "accident". There is no way the maid could not have noticed this when she changed the sheets. If she changed the sheets. The room is so unbelievably small the bed takes up most of the room and you have to turn sideways to walk around it. The father was there, the son was not. He is very pushy and entered our room once without knocking I almost had to physically throw him out. The balcony is a joke, so unbelievably narrow that the two little chairs and table take up all the space, I never once sat there. I peaked inside the ground floor courtyard room, I started laughing. The room was about the size of a bathroom. The "cute" lobby is set up like a museum, cute to look at but don't sit there, the reception desk is there taking most of the space anyway. The whole bathroom soaks when you take a shower with no shower curtain. How unbelievably stupid. The only thing worthwhile is the fantastic location. There is no way I would stay there again at any price. If you are the slightest bit claustrophic, or not an anorexic waif thin model don't even think of staying here. And feel your bed before you sit down in a nice warm wet spot. I've traveled in Europe extensively, these rooms are small even by European standards and French standards. Go elsewhere.

very pleasant and cozy

My husband and I stayed in this hotel last September. The location was fantastic. The room was beautiful and very clean and the place that we had breakfast everyday was great.

Location really makes this the place to stay

from keninCT
The location could not have been better. My partner and I went in February (Feb 12-18) and had a room on the top floor with a small balcony and a view of rooftops. We were warned that the rooms on the top floors and at the front were small, but by European standards it was fine. The bath was recently renovated and quite bright. The location could not have been better, the pastry shop a few doors down and the wonderful Marais restaurants were all so nearby, as was a metro stop on the 1 line, which is the line that will take you to all the key tourist sights and that links to every other Metro and RER line. The staff were friendly and helpful when needed, the reception area was like coming home each night, with a small fire in the fireplace and someone to always say "bon soir". We can't wait to go back. If you know what to expect size-wise in Paris boutique hotels, and don't mind small rooms, ask for room 60.

Very comfortable

from A TripAdvisor Member
My adult daughter and I stayed at this hotel in January for 4 nights.
It is in a wonderful location and close to an internet cafe on Rue du Roi Sicile. My daughter described the room as having the feel of a bedroom, not a hotel! The beds were very comfortable, they even had real boxsprings! The water was very hot which allowed us to enjoy a hot bath at the end of the day in a very nice bathroom! They have added air conditioning to the hotel, although this being winter the heat was on, which did get to warm. We opened the window for relief! Our room, 11, was a fine size for 2 people. The management was wonderful in reserving restaurants I had requested ahead of time. They even made dinner reservations for my return trip to Paris 2 weeks after I was checking out of this hotel.

The only negative comment we had was checking out. I knew it would be best to check out the evening before we left. I gave them my American Express card to pay for our bill. He swiped my card, said it didn't work. He told me the magnetic part was not working properly. I knew this was incorrect since I had used the card for dinners and shopping, even on this day. He continued swiping the card, saying it wouldn't work. I asked him to please call American Express then. He said they were closed. It was 6:30 p.m. I just stood there for 15 minutes, not offering another card. Finally, my card magically worked!

I would still recommend this hotel since we had no other problems and they were very helpful in every other way. They also let my daughter borrow an iron to use in our room for 15 minutes! We asked for a discounted rate when I reserved in November and they did give me a 10% discount on our room.

Our Favorite Hotel ever!

Stayed for 10 nights and found the hotel exactly as we had pictured it! It has a charming boutique style, classic Parisian ambience and is perfectly situated in the Marais -- lots of wonderful restaurants, close to Metro, just a stones throw Notre Dame. Our room was small, but lovely and we had a small balcony that looked toward Ile de la Cite. The value was extraordinary and the staff was delightful, making excellent recommendations on restaurants. The Caron de Beaumarchais will always be our first choice for a stay in Paris!

Great location

from catseattle1
My husband and I stayed there for 5 days in September 2003. Yes, the room was tiny, (even for European standard...) and we actually had the biggest room in the hotel, And I ran into other tourists who were paying much less with breakfast included at other 3star hotels.
However, considering the location, it was worth it. There are fabulous cafes and restaurants all in walking distance. We would park ourselves at a table on the street at one of the bars right outside the hotel and enjoy the view until 2 in the morning. We never felt unsafe walking around so late enjoying the night life. We may explore other hotels at our next trip, but we would definitely stay in Marais again.

Best hotel in Paris

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed in quite a few hotels in Paris and this hotel is the best by far. To people who complain that rooms are small or pricey I would just like to say that you're staying right in the heart of one of the biggest city's in Europe: what do you expect! And for what you get I think this is a great deal. The hotel feels more like a home than an impersonal hotel. Besides the great location (You're staying in the Marais!!) the hotel is very comfortbaly decorated, which makes a stay at this hotel a great experience. The staf was very friendly and the breakfast we enjoyed was scrumptuous to say the least. The breakfast was delivered to our room (for free!) and it was the best I've enjoyed in the whole of Paris! I would highly recommend this hotel. I believe this is the only place to stay when you visit Paris.

Perfect Experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
My partner and I just returned from 7 nights stay at the Hotel Caron de Beaumarchais, and our experience was better than I could have hoped.

The hotel is well appointed and comfortable, the owner and staff were very friendly and helpful, the service was excellent and the location was absolutely perfect. It's very easy to see why this hotel rates so well for the price. I can highly recommend this boutique hotel as one of my new favorites - and look forward to staying here again on my next trip to Paris.

Top Local Tips for Paris

Le Hangar Great, very French, bistro. Have the pumpkin and chestnut soup! Beware - no English was spoken by staff so we had to get by with out (very rusty) French but the food and wine we got was superb! Find it at 12 impasse Berthaud - its a tiny little hidden courtyard so keep your eyes peeled to find it

Taxi - get one on the street, don't order one. We had the hotel call a taxi for us to pick us up at a particular time. The taxi tried to charge us for the amount of money from the destination that he came from and then proceeded to charge us a sur charge for waiting an extra 5 minutes. So, just for stepping into his taxi, he tried to charge us 15 euros - or about 20 dollars. We were happy to pay a small fee, as we do here in the state - one or two dollars when you enter the taxi, even a few dollars for the extra five minutes - but not $20.00 just for the pleasure of stepping into his car. After we refused to get into his car, an argument ensued between my husband, the hotel manager and the taxi-cab driver. So, be sure to ask before hand about all of the additional charges that you will incure before having the hotel phone for a cab. Just make sure that they are fair and reasonable.

Harry's New York Bar - authentic New York Bar For something different that the traditional bistro - have a drink or 2 at Harry's Bar near Opera. ( It has Cuban wood panelling brought over from a new york bar in the 19th century and a very authentic earlt 20th New York bar feel. F Scott Fitzgerald and Hemingway both drunk here. The Bloody Mary was invented here. It's not cheap but the bar men who seem to have been there for ever themselves, know their cocktails and when we went at 2am it was pumping with a mix of Americans and young French drinkers.
