Top Local Tips for Paris
Travel in February We did not encounter lines anywhere in Paris, even on Valentine's day! NO lines at the Louvre, Musee D'Orsee, the Eiffel Tower or Versailles. The weather was mild, about 55 degrees and the sky was bright blue. The Musee D'Orsee is also open late on Thursdays, which cuts down on the crowd even more.
Metro Purchase A Rick Steve's guide book and a Visite Pass for all five Zones. Well Worth it !! Note train shuts down between 12:00 and 1:00 am.
Idea for dining If you're like us--traveling with weak dollars but enjoy eating good food--try having some picnics on the Seine near Notre Dame. You'll feel like you're starring in "American in Paris." I found a large and wonderful gourmet supermarket buried deep in the basement of the Palais de Congress, where I had my meeting. There was a great selection of prepared foods and many wines. To our surprise, the staff heated our selections, packed them up with plates and utensils, opened and re-corked our wine bottle, and put it all in pretty bag. Right outside the market is a "Paul" bakery, where you can get a fresh baguette. We had a great dinner-for-two--with wine and dessert, for about 20 euros! And you couldn't beat the ambience--on the Seine, watching the boats go by. There are probably many other shops like this--I would think in the basements of the department stores. There are also the upscale LeNotre shops here and there.

The staff were all friendly and professional with excellent language skills. The neighborhood was homey with all of the conveniences you could wish for within a couple of blocks as well as numerous inexpesive and interesting places to eat.
Both the Metro station and the RER Train station were right accross the street. The intersection you cross to get there has traffic lights making it safe and easy to get to the station.
The breakfast buffet was excellent providing choices for every taste.
