Location, Location, Location: perfect Location on the Left Bank

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel La Tour Notre Dame for two nights in late autumn (2004) because the hotel is a stone's throw from the Musee National de Moyen Age (formely the Musee Cluny) which houses the famous Lady and the Unicorn tapestries (among other wonderful things). On this trip, our plan was not to take public transportation but to walk everywhere and discover Paris by foot. The hotel is up the block and across the street from the Chapelle de la Sorbonne and down the block from the Universities of Paris. We also wanted to be within walking distance to a lot of historical and religious places in the Left Bank/Latin Quarter/St. Germain de Pres area including the Pantheon, Notre Dame Cathedral, several renowed and ancient churches, including St. Michel and Saint Sulpice (of The Da Vinci Code fame), the Luxembourg Gardens, the roman ruins of the Lutece arena, Rue Mouffletard and other famous streets, historic cafes and bars. (On one of our walks, we passed a building where Ernest Hemingway once lived!) Thus, the hotel is perfectly located for venturing out in the Left Bank in every direction and discovering the historical and literary Paris. Furthermore, we found the service to be above average and oftentimes, bordering on excellent. We found the breakfast to be well above average for a hotel of this price range. In my experience (and I have traveled widely in France), I found the selection of yogurts, cereals, fresh fruits, meats and cheeses, Normandy butter, delectable jams, fresh rolls and croissants, juices and coffee made to order to rival some of the petit dejeuners served at finer establishments! While our room was diminutive, it was clean and the bathroom was spick-and-span each day after returning at day's end (with plenty of fresh towels and bath products). We were also lucky to have a top corner room with a view of the Pantheon dome and a long stretch of Rue St. Jacques going up to the Sorbonne! The bed was comfortable and we slept well. This hotel must be viewed in comparison with other hotels in its price range...and on this particular trip, I found it much nicer than a hotel we stayed in another section of Paris a few days later for more money!

Stayed here with my boyfriend in Summer 2004 (July). I have (almost) nothing but praise!
The room was small but there was enough room for everything we needed - cupboards, dressing table, bed and so on. There was a large window with a great view, the ensuite was compact but had everything one needed with a good shower. Above all, the room was kept clean with new towels daily and the maids kept the room tidy even when we didn't!
The buffet breakfast catered for both meat eaters and vegetarians adequately. Although there was not a large selection, what there was was fresh and tasty. I'd sum it up as a good Continental brekkie.
My only gripe: For a non-smoking room, the room had obviously been smoked in before as a faint odour remained.
The location is superb! 2 minutes from Notre Dame, one minute from the Metro and the line connects to everywhere in Paris. 2 minutes from the Latin Quarter (we also recommend the Santorini Greek restaurant on Rue de l'Harpe) with loads of restaurants, bars and cafes.
Highly recommended and I wouod definitely go again. We recommend this gem to all of our friends.

Teensy Room, Maids Steal

The location is great, but we were given the smallest room I've ever seen. It was uncomfortably tiny for two people. In addition, other guests warned us, and we experienced the same thing: stuff gets used and stuff gets lifted, presumably by the help. The price was good for Paris, but the bargain wasn't worth it.

Hotel was clean - freshly painted and bathrooms were being updated with new fixtures when we were there. Staff was courteous. Breakfast service (12 euro) was sufficient. Hotel was in a great location for visiting Pantheon, Notre Dame, Sorbonne and mingling with the University students during dinner and after. The latin quarter has some great walking and restaurants. Very convenient to the subway. Perfect for first time Paris trips. 4 blocks from the Seine.

I am somewhat surprised at the level of anger expressed in some of the previous reviews. i spent a week in this hotel last February and found it to be quite acceptable for the price and location. I have stayed in some real seedy hotels in Paris and this is nowhere near what I have seen in other similar places. The Tour Notre-Dame offered a clean if somewhat small room. I come to Paris to be out and about, not to watch TV and surf the Web. The room was quite sufficient. The decor of toile was a bit much, but I was sleeping most of the time so it didn't scar me emotionally. The bathroom was small but clean and the little leak was an inconvenience but nothing more. The breakfast was generous and served by a pleasant young woman. The desk clerk was very conscientious about passing along messages.
The neighborhood was very convenient but a little bit noisy at night. I wouldn't want to stay here during the summer if I wanted to sleep with the windows open. Besides that, I would certainly consider this hotel again in the future.

Its a real shame that so many people have not enjoyed the Tour Notre Dame - we stayed there last year (November) and although it does have some drawbacks, we liked it and certainly didn't have any of the same complaints as the other reviewers. I think a counter-review might be helpful here. I can see why some people might not like it much but I think the general drubbing it's received here may be unrepresentative.
We had a room on the street side of the hotel on the third or fourth floor. Once we got over the entirely mental toile de joie decor (entire room, from floor to ceiling, in the same large red print fabric - it was a bit womb-like, to be honest) we found the room comfortable, clean, warm, safe etc. It was quite large enough for two people (whilst being on the small side, which is usual for Paris, it wasn't cramped) - the bed was comfortable, the bathroom clean and functional, if tiny. Telly worked, hairdryer worked, so all was well.
The lobby is fine - nothing tacky about it in our opinion, the staff were helpful and friendly, and despite quite limited English they communicated effectively with us. Breakfast was in a cute cellar restaurant and was fresh and plentiful.
Excellent location, very convenient, small but par-for-the-course-for Paris sized hotel room, perfectly adequate bathroom, nice staff, good breakfast. What more do you want for less than £50pp?

I thought it would be charming, and it appeared to be a great location so I took my wife and mother-in-law there just after valentines day. Extremely small rooms, hideous decor and the yes the service was crap too. They gave us different room types to what we reserved without a word, and the bath where my mother-in-law stayed was a health hazard. In fact, this resulted in her sustaining a nasty injury. Of course the staff took forever to call a doctor, didn't even offer a cup of tea to calm her down and were only interested in their insurance when they took her off to hospital.

We booked the hotel through Hotels.com with no knowledge of the reviews written above. This hotel is disgusting. The staff is condescending (and I even speak French), the mattresses are saggy, the linens are ridiculously old and it was impossible to move about in our room with 2 people and 2 suitcases. This was even AFTER we rejected the first room that they tried to force on us. With all of the other hotels in the arrondissement, save yourself a headache and stay there!

Having read the reviews on here I was naturally nervous. Believe every bad review you read on here - you will need to have the patience of a saint to stay in this hotel!
When we arrived at the hotel, we were told "sorry we do not have a room for you, students have trashed several rooms in the hotel." We were moved for a day to another hotel round the corner after being given directions, and managed to book in the next morning after they had cleaned up.
The rooms are small (the mini-bar door would not even fully open - the room is about the length of the bed plus 3 feet), advertised as soundproofed, having internet access, and with room service. We were kept awake all night by banging from the room upstairs above us, the room service is "we can bring you a coffee in the morning but there is no food room service." The internet access is actually wireless and supplied by an external company to the entire area, not just the hotel.
If this is not bad enough the bath had no plug, there was a tile missing on the bath, the toilet seat was yellowed and did not look very clean, the air vent in the toilet was broken so it smelled really bad, and the hair dryer had a big hole in the side. Another alarming thing was that someone had drunk a bottle of the mineral water in the mini-bar, and filled it back up with tap water!
When we complained about the bath to the guy on reception in the evening we were told it was not his problem, in his words, "I am here to serve coffee, answer the phone, and check people in. If you have a complaint to speak to a manager in the morning."
Naturally we checked out the next morning, and managed to find another much nicer hotel near the Eiffel Tower. In my opinion, please save your money and book somewhere else!!!

You can do Better!

There are much better choices around this area. The location is good, but the hotel is not. Small rooms, bad breakfast, and run down. Would not recommend it at all. The staff also lost our reservation and then pretended they had not. They gave us the wrong type of room without saying anything and we had to ask if there was a mistake.
There are tons of better places in the Latin Quarter (which is a great location by the way)!

Top Local Tips for Paris
Metro Metro and Busy is an economical way to getting around. Just follow the maps..
Couple of money saver tip 1. Museum Pass: buy it at the train station it was SO worth it. You skip few lines and at the end save some bucks www.museumpass.com 2. Train Pass: we got it right at the train station on the airport for a couple of days and we moved around everywhere with it. No need for taxis at all. It's extremely easy to move around paris using the subway or the buses. 3. The location of the hotel was awesome as two blocks away (stone streets) there were so many options for nice reasonable bistros, shops, etc.
Walk a little way - it's Paris, and beautiful For good food, try the area on the other side of the Luxembourg gardens or walk to the Ile St-Louis (not the flashy pavement bars with bridge views, but up the narrow street, especially the Rue de l'Ile St Louis). No bargains, but you'll find good meals.
