Perfect location, great service, très branché

I stayed here for 3 nights on a romantic R&R stopover on the way home from a business trip in west Africa. Reception and concierge staff are young and enthusiastic and helpful and I think they would have been even if we did not speak French. Breakfast buffet is pricey at 20 Euros, but good. The hotel is easy walking distance to anywhere in St Germain, Montparnasse, the Louvre, the Marais, the Quartier Latin. The immediate area is full of good restaurants, antique and art galleries, the famous (if touristy and overpriced) cafés de Flore and des Deux Magots, Braserie Lipp, etc. The hotel is targeted towards young, hip media types, The decor is minimal, chic, but well-done and pleasing. The room (a double) was pretty tiny, but the bed was quite big. High-speed wireless internet available in the rooms and at a few computers in the lobby. It was very enjoyable for a romantic encounter (the staff came in to make up the bed almost every time we went out), and I would stay there again if I got a decent price. The rack rate is about 300 Euros, but you should be able to find a deal for around 200.

Five Star Service

We just returned from a five night stay at the Bel Ami Hotel in Paris. We found the room to be more than adequate by Parisian standards. From the concierge's restaurant recommendations to the perfect attention of the front desk manager in extending our stay, we could not have asked for better service from the staff. We found every member absolutely exceptional. Location is perfect and after the stiffling summer heat the airconditioning was heaven sent. We will gladly return to the Bel Ami.

just came back from Paris where we stayed 5 nights at the Bel Ami and loved it! we sprung for the deluxe room after reading a trip advisor review which said that the size difference was worth the extra $$ and I agree. we paid 250 euro a night which included breakfast. The breakfast buffet was great. The staff was friendly and helpful and the hotel was really cute and very clean. Our room was very spacious and so pretty. The double paned windows blocked out the street noise completely. The neighborhood (san germain des pres) was our favorite in Paris.

Made the right choice

I did a ton of research on hotels before finally deciding on Le Bel Ami. The hotel is nice with average rooms. Here is a full review:

Location - Excellent. On quiet street. Several restaurants next to hotel, one block away from shops on lively Blvd. St. Germain, Rue De Buci, and 10 minutes walking distance to Seine, Louvre, Luxembourg Gardens, Pantheon and a little further to most attractions. 15 minute walk to Latin Quarter. Metro stop right around the corner.

Service - Excellent. We pulled up to the hotel and the bell hop was getting our luggage even before we got out of the taxi. Staff was young, well dressed, friendly and spoke English. Bel Ami had more employees in the lobby than any of the hotels we saw in the Saint Germain area.

Lobby - a little smokey, but clean, bright and welcoming. There was hip music playing all the time. The 2 laptop computers with free internet access was a nice bonus. I saw several pedestrians walking by stop to look at the hotel. I peeked into lobbies of several other hotels that I was considering in the area and Bel Ami was definitely the nicest.

Room - this was the most disappointing part of the hotel. Rooms were very small (and we had a superior). Decor was modern but rooms still looked old for some reason. Bathroom was nice with white/grey marble tiles. Shower had half door so water splashed out. Towels were nice with a warming rack. Plush robes and slippers were also provided. We asked to see another room with a better view which they were happy to do but that room's bathroom was even smaller and view was only a little better so we opted to stay in the first room.

Breakfast - served on the first floor in a modern looking room. Included eggs, bacon, sausage, yogurt, fresh fruit, breads, cheeses, fresh squeezed OJ, coffee/tea. Eggs had an odd texture but overall breakfast was good. Got a little tired of it after 3 days though.

Overall we enjoyed our stay at Le Bel Ami. Though the rooms weren't worth $300/nt, the service, location, lobby, breakfast made up for it.

Underwhelming

The staff was very friendly, spoke English with varying degrees of skill, and the lobby was nice (although it always smelled of smoke). The location was excellent and the breakfast was average. Our room reaked of smoke. My major complaint is room size and decor. Orange can be cheery, but this is overdone. I also may be used to American size rooms but ours was small even by European standards. Two people cannot walk arouund the bed at one time and I could not sit straight on the toilet without my knees hitting the towel rack/heater. I am above average in height at 6 feet, but my wife had the same problem and she is 5" 9". There is also the added luggage hazard since only one small luggage rack is provided which takes up half of the single small closet. I received much better value for my money in Rome and London on this trip. The room also had nothing resembling a view. The free internet access in the lobby is great, although they should put a courtesy time limit up since some people/children are on the 2 available computers for hours at a time.

We loved the Hotel Bel Ami. We got a fantastic rate using their website. It's right off the Blvd St Germain Des Pres and only 2 blocks away from the Seine. We stayed in a Superior room, and while it was smaller than an American hotel room, we never felt cramped (except the closet was tiny). The concierge was friendly and spoke perfect English, and were always helpful with reservations and directions and advice. It was our first trip to Paris and we had a great stay due to the wonderful folks at Hotel Bel Ami.

Designer hotel minus the attitude - loved Bel Ami

We stayed at the Bel Ami in February and had a wonderful time. Firstly, the location is fantastic. Notre Dame, the Louvre and the Musee d'Orsay are in easy walking distance plus the cobbled backstreets of St Germain have so much character.

The hotel itself was 'designer' but the service and the attitude of the staff was completely unpretentious and friendly. Pretty much everyone spoke English and we felt completley comfortable and at home.

Our room was lovely. I should point out that if you're after luxury, opulence and chintz that this is not the place for you. The style is contemporary and minimalist. The rooms weren't large but then, you're in Paris.

Breakfast was included in our package. The 'cantine' where breakfast is served is a really funky room and the food was great.

The concierge was really helpful in suggesting and booking restaurants for us. We ate so well!

I am going back to Paris next month and after researching alternatives, I'm staying Bel Ami again.

great staffs

I was there for 4 nights in May 2004. I read a lot about bel-ami in design books and magazine, so I picked the hotel because it sounds promising. I booked through the internet just 2 day before I arrived. And guess what? I did pick the right hotel. The staffs were very helpful and friendly, a smile each morning was very pleasing. The concierge even helped me change my flight's booking with the airline company since i don't speak the language. Location is super, louis vuitton is just next door, cafe flore is around the corner. The nearest metro station is just 3 minutes walk from the hotel. Breakfast was great too. Everything about the hotel is a five star. I will definitely go back to bel-ami!

OK if you get it cheap

Nicely designed rooms, friendly staff. The elevator was broken several times during our stay. There were some bad smells in the hall. Service friendly, but not very professional, staff didn't seem very experienced. The doors are thin and we heard a lot of noise from the halls even though we were on the end of a hall. Included breakfast was no good.

GREAT LOCATION and the rooms were nice enough. If you get a really good deal here and you're on a budget I would recommend it. Otherwise, I wished we had tried the Montlambert close by.

Friendly effecient service

Stayed between X-mass and New Year. Very good position but most importantly the staff were all friendly and stunningly efficient without being intrusive. Don't let the Boutique label put you off, the service is distinctly traditional.
The rooms are small even by London standards but clean and interesting.

Nicest staff imaginable

If you could wish for a nice staff that was attentive, young, kind, and extending, then you would have the employees of the Bel Ami. The hotel is extremely well-located. The design is perfect for our time. The rooms are a bit small. But, this is Paris. This is not LA. The sister hotel, The Montalembert, is also extremely nice- only not as well located unless you want to be off the common path. The Bel Ami is the younger, hip sister to the the more sophisticated Montalembert. Either way, you can not lose.

Top Local Tips for Paris

using the metro and taxis the metro in paris is really easy to get around with, get a small metro map to accompany a street map so you'll find the routes in addition to station locations. taxis are quite convenient, not all drivers speak english nor do they know locations of restaurants etc, so its good to know the street name and have some idea how to pronounce it or have it on paper. many taxis are equipped with gps deviced so they're not likely to have problems finding any streets.

Beggars & Dodgy Deals The organised teams of non French beggars & sellers of unauthorised tat are at every tourist spot & the main stations taxi ranks. They target English speakers, ignore them, as well as anything that look likes a scam, if it is to good to be true, then it is. The police will see them off but they are always there somewhere, particularly bad was the Arc D'Triomphe, Eiffel Tower & the Gare D'Nord. At the latter they were waiting for Taxis to arrive & accousted you while paying the taxi drivers, who also have no time for them. They are not true beggars, they are soliciting.

Getting Around and What to Pack Get a map of the Metro system and a museum pass and off you go. You won't need a cab. Pack comfortable walking shoes and just enjoy those fabulous cafes and museums. Pack lightly, take layers and an umbrella. Choose a nice but simple wardrobe, (nice jeans, tops, sweater and a stylish jacket) not athletic wear, or you'll stand out like a sore thumb! Parisians, of course, dress beautifully and simply, even those who are very casual. Take a lightweight scarf, ladies, as most Parisian women wear one.
