Top Local Tips for Paris
Making Transitions While in France, our greatest challenges occurred when we had to make a transition from one location to another. When travelling by train, you need to allow lots of time to get to the train station (by bus, Metro or walking), get your ticket, get to the appropriate platform, etc. Don't count on being able to use escalators! Chances are you will have to carry your luggage up and down assorted staircases. Larger train stations can be particularly confusing, e.g. Gare du Lyon in Paris, and signage is not what it should be. Train personnel are helpful - ask if you need assistance. Airports also can be challenging - Charles de Galle is huge, and we needed a half hour to walk from the train platform to the check-in counter.
Get your head around French culture before you go If you want to genuinely understand French culture and enjoy your interactions with the people, I thoroughly recommend a book I found at the airport entitled "Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong", by Jean-Benoit Nadeau and Julie Barlow. It highlights some of the key ways in which French are different in their culture and social expectations and will save you from inadvertantly being rude the entire time you are there and getting negative reactions in return. The French are absolutely delightful when you understand where they're coming from.
Reasonably priced, authentic Parisian Dining I would highly recommend the Bouillon Racine restaurant. Even though it is in the Latin Quarter, just south of Boulevard Saint Germain, it is an easy metro trip away (on the Number 10 line, enter at Emile Zola, get off at Cluny Sorbonne, with no transferring). It has an impressive Art Nouveau decor, with lots of original mirrors and bevelled glass windows. A jazz band played music while we were there. Very romantic, good food (I highly recommend the creme brulee on a waffle). http://www.bouillon-racine.com/en/home/index.html
