Not quite what I expected

I agree withh a previous reviewer that the hotel certainly doesn't live up to it's web or brochure presentation, for one thing where were all the lush potted plants? I imagine these were brought in by the photographers for the occasion. The breakfast was lacking fresh fruit and proper jam or marmalade, though you could have as much as you like. One of the main lights in my room was not working. There was no door to my shower. The situation of my room was very noisy from traffic and other residents but on the plus side the room was very clean. Staff on reception were adequate though one guy in particular was very helpful.

Weary, dull, stale, flat and unprofitable

The Armstrong Hotel was voted by my wife and self as deserving of an award for creative writing on the strength of its self presentation via its Web site. The reality upon arrival presents a very different picture. With a staff of one, mostly riveted to the TV sports channel in the intolerably smoky bar room, the hotel is tired and threadbare. The rooms are poky, and not exactly dirty, but not exactly clean either. The breakfast wasn't bad.
Certainly won't be making a second visit or recommending a visit of any kind to anyone else.

Upon arrival, we were informed that a flood had occured. They booked us into a comparable 'Hotel' which turned out to be a hostel..full of high schoolers. Returned the next day to the Armstrong. Not the best location and somewhat out of the way. I would try a chain if I were to return again...which is doubtful.

Arriving in Paris late at night on bikes with jetlag from Australia was made much more pleasant by the friendly staff at the Armstrong Hotel. The manager was very helpful, with our excess baggage and bike store. Breeky was nice, typical european fare, the rooms were small but adequate... overall a really nice start to a great holiday!

The location is easy for getting around Paris, the receptionists are helpful. I was impressed by my stay here. Useful internet cafe (fast) and nice rooms.

I would absolutely recommend this hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
My two friends and I had an excellent time at the Armstong Hotel. For the most part, we spent only nights there sleeping, but the beds were comfortable, the rooms clean, and the private bathroom- complete with a bathtub in our case- was a godsend after one cold day around Paris. The location is certainly off the beaten track, and if you're looking for a
hotel in "authentic" Paris, then this is probably not the best bet for you. My friends and I ended up really enjoying the neighborhood though, and getting to see a Paris that was a bit different from the one we imagined, and bit more every day. Additionally, the Hotel is very close to the Cimitiere Pere Lachasie, which we wouldn't have otherwise visited, but found incredibly cool. If you're in the area on a sunday, make sure to check it out, and stop in at the street market on the way. We picked up some incredible produce and cheese there and had ourselves quite a feast. The hotel staff was friendly, flexible and knowledgible and, on the whole, I would absolutely recommend this hotel to my friends, and seriously consider staying there again myself.

I really liked this hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I really liked staying in this hotel but I feel it has a lot more potential. The place is very clean and the showers are lovely and hot, tv in every room and very friendly staff.I also slept like a baby every night. It is also right beside a metro station and you can go anywhere with a metro pass within minutes. I do think that new more modern decor and the breakfast room could easily be made into a beautiful restaurant would make a huge difference. They only do breakfast(which is lovely). It would be nice if you could get lunch or dinner there. They also have internet access which is very helpfull, a pool table sauna and a bar which is all handy. Overall I had a wonderful stay fo a very reasonable price, but a few simple changes would make a massive difference. It's the kinda place you would love to buy and do up!Definitely worth staying there!

Terribly false advertising

from A TripAdvisor Member
After finding Hotel Armstrong in a travel guide and checking out the Web site, I booked it immediately. I didn't think I could go wrong with a recently renovated hotel with an Internet cafe, restaurant/bar and friendly staff near the Bastille area. As it turns out, the "Internet cafe" consists of four computers (one without a keyboard) and an orange juice dispenser. The "restaurant" is a small bar that the staff never mans and a couple tables. The hotel is located in a scary neighborhood on the far east side of town; it's one of the last metro stops. You'll find a McDonalds, some smoky bars, a convenience store and a lot of sketchy dudes hanging around at night. My room was appallingly dirty. The floor looked like it had never been vacuumed and there was hair in the shower, sink and toilet. When I told the man at the front desk, he reluctantly dug up some disinfectant so I could clean it myself. The only positive was it was cheap. Friends don't let friends -- or strangers -- stay at the Armstrong.

What is false is that you are overstating your case and making incorrect statements thereby misleading TripAdvisor visitors.

The hotel has 5 computers in all for 60 rooms of which one was down when you stayed. Still a damn good service for a two star 60 room hotel, especially at only 5 euros for 24 hours of broadband surfing....

The bar is not just an orange juice dispenser (which is only used for breakfast). It is a fully licensed bar selling soft drinks, beers, wines and spirits plus hot drinks, all at reasonable rates and open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

The hotel does not have a restaurant and has never been advertised as such. A copious buffet breakfast however is available from 7 to 10 every day.

The hotel is in an area which is not in any way dangerous: yes, Paris is now a multi-cultural city and proud of it. Yes we unfortunately do have our share of drunks and down and outs but they are also in the most touristic areas too. In 20 years I have never heard of a case of pickpocketing in our area. But beware, this is commonplace by the Champ-Elysees, the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower ..... Paris is still one of the most beautiful cities in the world but don't arrive with preconceived ideas of a France of a few decades ago that you may have seen in the old films ....

The metro Porte de Montreuil is about 15-20 minutes to the most central parts of Paris (Opera etc.) and so if you accept riding the metro for a little bit longer then you will get a great deal for your money.

By overstating your case previously I can only hope that this is the same for your comments on the cleanliness. All our rooms are cleaned daily and are controlled by a housekeeper. If not they you should complain.

A very nice hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a very nice hotel with helpful people on the reception. The room with bathroom and toilet was clean and secure and the radiator worked well (very cold in Paris). Only problem was that on the first day there was a smell of paint as they were finishing renovation of the hotel. The girl on the front desk was VERY HELPFUL with lots of tips about where to go and what to do. I recommend this place as the price was very good too.

Good value for money

from A TripAdvisor Member
My girlfriend and I stayed at the Hotel Armstrong in Paris for a 3 day break and our overall impressions were good. The receptionnist was helpful by changing our room for a double bed after the first night. Almost all the staff spoke excellent English and were helpful with information about Paris. The room was not spacious but I have been to Paris before and this seems common. We were impressed by the good services for the low price paid: bar, buffet breakfast, internet café (only 4 euros for a day), and the car park at the hotel was practical. We had an enjoyable stay and have recommended the hotel to our friends.

A great place to stay

The Horror! The Horror!

from PacificKanaan
As it was our first time in Paris on a backpacking trip, we thought we'd stay at a modest 3-star hotel. We didn't expect much -- only perhaps a clean room, clean sheets, decent neighborhood. Yeah, not so much. The hallways were filthy and so was the room. Okay, well, whatever, right? It's not like I was going to be eating on the floors or sleeping on the walls or anything of the sort. But even the sheets had stains, like the kind that may have been produced from an "hourly visit." The bathroom was disgusting and I had a constant fear of contracting some type of fungal infection. There wasn't a shower curtain so the water would flood the floor. Sexy. We even ended up using a shirt as a barrier between our heads and the pillows. And the neighborhood wasn't the best either. We're from L.A. so we know shady neighborhoods when we see one. And that's where we were. Shady. A good time at the Champs Elysees late into the night then getting off the metro to go back to the Hotel Armpit produced that uneasy feeling such as one gets when walking through a dark alley. At least you weren't alone since the street from the metro to the hotel was lined with the homeless. So all in all, it's a filthy hotel in a filthy neighborhood. We just plain felt dirty in that hotel. And that kind of filth, you can't wash off even with a long, hot shower. Especially, when using the hotel's bathroom.
Management Response from HotelArmstrong
This review dates back to 2005 and I would like readers today in 2009 (and after) to know that the Hotel Armstrong was completely renovated towards the end of 2008. If you take the time to look you will see that the majority of the more recent reviews are very favourable. On top of a number of new services like free wireless internet throughout the hotel, private safes and flat screen TVs in all the rooms, we have changed to soft duvets instead of sheets and blankets. This means comfier bedding with greater hygiene.

We both liked the hotel but was wary of it after reading the other reviews!

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel Armstrong was a good hotel, my boyfriend and I thought it was an average hotel. We were both slightly apprehensive about it after reading the reviews after we booked it! The place was very clean, our room was cleaned everyday. The hotel itself is very near the tube station which is handy. It was on the outskirts of the main touristy parts but the good thing about this was that you were not getting ripped off. The beds were comfortable although the rooms were small. I didn't think it was a particularly noisy hotel but you are staying in a city so you can expect some noise! The staff were very friendly and helpful and the bar prices were reasonable. I have been in nicer hotels but for a budget break, I thought this hotel was really good and I would recommend it, and I would stay there again.

charlie and the chocolate factory

from Lolly2
Arrived in the area at 9.30pm, area surrounding the hotel is very dodgy-and not tree lined as the advert says. The hotel is shabby and the corridors were narrow (like in charlie and the chocolate factory!) with dirty carpets. the room was small, with stained wallpaper and a very shabby bathroom. Was woken up by other guests at 3am, shouting in the hall outside my room. We had to leave first thing in the morning to stay somewhere else. An immense disappointment. Very sub-standard.
Management Response from HotelArmstrong
I checked again today and there are still trees lining the Boulevard Davout between the metro and the Hotel Armstrong. Maybe it was dark ?! I have returned to comment on this review in 2009 as the hotel went through a complete refurbishment at the end of 2008. The rooms are still on the small side (this is very common in Paris, even for hotels twice the price) but there are new wool carpets in all the rooms and public areas. The rooms and bathrooms have been redone (wall-paper, paintwork, ceilings….) and flat screen TVs are on all the walls. Free wireless internet can now be used in all the rooms and individual safes have been put in the wardrobes. I guess that the guests who were shouting in the hall outside your room have since left.
