Location, location, location!

We booked this hotel based on reviews from this website and it exceeded our expectations in every way. As noted in other reviews, the room was very small, but the bonus was that it opened on to a small balcony overlooking Blvd. St. Germain with a view of the Pantheon. Having stayed on the Rue de Rivoli before, we were delighted by the ambience of this area - significantly less touristy with more choices of places to eat and shop. The hotel staff couldn't have been nicer and non-intrusive. We never saw the housekeeping staff but our room was perfectly made up every day. One thing to note is that the lift holds two people or one person with luggage! Instead of eating out, we chose to pick up baguettes, cheese, wine and pastries from the shops along the street for dinner and were able to mix with the Parisian people without feeling like gawking tourists. Convenient to the Maubert Metro stop and extremely easy to get anywhere in Paris on the Metro. A bonus was that it's an easy and picturesque walk to Notre Dame. Waking up to the sound of church bells was fabulous. I will definitely be staying here again in the future. Don't expect luxury - just a Parisian experience that you will never forget.

I stayed at the Hotel Abbatial Saint Germain on October 19 - 21, 2004. The hotel could not be in a better location. Just minutes walk from the river and Notre Dame. There are plenty of tour buses you can get just up the road. We did the L' Open Tour, which was great and had 4 different routes to go on for one set price.
We stayed in room #22 which had two long windows which opened up onto a very nice side street. The room was very small, but clean and comfortable. There is an elevator in the hotel, but I would recommend just putting your luggage in there and going up the stairs if you can, due to the fact it is extremely small. The staff was also very friendly and helpful mostly everyone spoke English.

Clean, convenient, comfortable hotel

On our honeymoon, we stayed in the Hotel Abbatial for 2 nights, and after touring the mountains, decided to stay here again for the night before we returned to the states. The first stay we were in room #21, the second stay in room #44.
The rooms are exceptionally clean, especially the bathrooms. We were expecting that Paris hotels would be tiny but our rooms were plenty large for the two of us and our two rolling duffels. Room #21 had an interior view but was fine -- we were hardly in the room at all anyway. Room #44 faced a side street, and on a Friday morning, was bustling with truck and car traffic. As other people have commented, the elevator was not very big, but not a big deal! We used the stairs most of the time anyway.
In terms of the breakfast, yes, you could probably get a croissant and coffee for less than 10 euros at a cafe, but usually we didn't have just a croissant and coffee for breakfast! Breakfast is served in a cute little "grotto" in the basement -- we filled ourselves with coffee, hot chocolate, croissants, cheese, baguettes, cereal, fruit, yogurt, and juice (not all at once!). I'm sure that if we had paid individually at a cafe for what we usually ate at the hotel breakfast, it would be close to 10 euros or even more.
The location is fantastic -- we never took a cab anywhere in Paris, including to and from the airport. About a block away from the Maubert metro stop, you need only go one stop to transfer to other lines (including the RER line to the airport). The bus also stops a block away, linking you directly to the Gare Lyon (if you take the train to other French/European sites). There were lots of good restaurants within a block or two, so if you came back after a long day of sightseeing, you needn't go far to go back out for dinner.
The hotel staff was also very accomodating, friendly, and informative. We highly recommend the Hotel Abbatial!

We stayed at the Abbatial Saint Germain for two nights. The location was excellent, within walking distance to the metro, cafes and many places of interest. The two rooms were both very clean and the service at the front desk courteous. We would definitely stay there again.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights while we were in Paris. The best aspect of this hotel is the location. We were only 1/2 a block from the Maubert Metro stop and were able to walk to Notre Dame in 5 minutes.
The staff was kind and the room was kept very clean. The lobby is beautiful too.
As others have mentioned on this site, the elevator is extremely small but it didn't really matter. It carried the two of us up and we always walked down. The room is on the smaller side compared to American hotel rooms but was fine. The bathroom was a good size but I couldn't quite figure out that half door thing for the shower. The first night I totally soaked the bathroom. Two words: Shower curtain.
Overall, I think this is a great hotel especially for the price. The location alone is worth it.

Room 23. Small room and very clean. New bathrooms. Room opened up onto side street, which kept it fairly quiet. Location was very close to Seine and a few attractions including Instuit du Monde Arabe, Pantheon, and Notre Dame. Easy to get everywhere. Also more in a residential location, which was better than the tourist areas. Would stay there again.

My husband and I spent three nights at the Abbatial St. Germain, booking there based on prior recommends on this site. They gave us room #31. DO NOT STAY IN THAT ROOM. It has a small window that only opens to the inside of the hotel. The air conditioner didn't work, there was only a small desk fan in there. It was the end of June and warm! I told the clerk that the AC didn't work, and she was able to move us the NEXTday to a much nicer room with real windows that opened out. Both rooms are small. The bathrooms are a relatively good size and clean. The location is really just OK. It is close to the metro, but you must take the metro everywhere to get anywhere. The staff was fairly friendly. It's a good value for the money, but the rooms are really basic. I would stay in the St. Germain des Pres area next time, that's where all the restaurants, bars, and shopping are!
Great hotel, great location

My daughter and I stayed here for 3 nights in June. The hotel is nice. Our room (#61) had a great view of the Paris skyline including Notre Dam and the Pantheon. We asked for twin beds and actual were given a double and a twin. The room was a nice size (for a European hotel), even had 2 small closets. The hotel is 1 block away from a subway station and is just several blocks to Notre Dam. There are many cafe's and restraurants within a 1/2 radius.
I was most impressed with the staff. I had a problem with my train tickets and the front desk clerk went out of her way to call the train station and was able to solve the problem for me. Very nice, since I speak no French at all. They were also very helpful to another traveler who had lost their luggage.
I would forgo the continental breakfast - 10euros. There are many cafe's and passiteries in the area where you can get great breakfasts for less money.

My husband and I stayed in room 14 in June 2004. There was a drawer missing from one of the nightstands, shreds of fabric hanging from a footstool, stains on the headboard and ceiling and we found a book of pornography atop the cupboard. Whenever we or another guest flushed or showered we heard the gush of water in the wall behind the headboard. The bathroom had a sliding door that was hard to maneuver and wasn't designed to fully close. The bed and pillows were scratchy and lumpy. We awoke one morning to a worker sawing in the hallway. But the location was excellent and the desk staff was very helpful.
Good Value - Good Location

Just returned from five day stay in the Hotel Abbatial from 6/3/04-6/7/04. Rented two triple rooms on the third and fourth floors. The Lift (elevator) is very small....will accomodate two people or one person with their luggage. Normally took the stairs. Slept with the windows open until it got warm on the last night and the hotel turned the A/C on. It worked acceptably in one room (#35) and horribly in the other (#45). In room mini-refrigerator with nice restroom. Rooms were small, but that's Europe. Limited cable TV channels, only non-French channels were CNN-World and the BBC. Good restaurants within walking distance. My family enjoyed the contintental breakfast that was served in a quaint basement dining area. The hotel is only one block from a Metro station and two blocks south of the Seine River. If looking for a good price/value hotel again in Paris, I'd choose the Abbatial again. The staff was very friendly, and as required by the French gov't for a *** hotel, there was always an English speaking staff member at the Front Desk.
Top Local Tips for Paris
Arriving at CDG Jump on the blue line train to get into the city. Use the machines at the station instead of standing in a huge queue. Instructions in English and you can pay by cash or card....much quicker!
Allard, 41 rue St-André-des-Arts Great tradtitional bistro in the Latin quarter, food made using all the tasty bits. Book ahead it gets very busy.
Falafel In the Marais region of Paris, very close to the Pompidou centre there is a Falafel resturant which states on it's window "The Best falafel in the world!" and it is true. Be sure to try it if you are near. Located at rue des Rosiers at L'As du Falafel, number 34.
