Historical Traveller Reviews of A La Villa Saint Martin Hotel
Would Choose Another Hotel
My mother, aunt, cousin, and I stayed here Sept 19-22, 2006. Our hotel was booked through a travel agent and I believe she booked us into an economy hotel and room. The hotel is small and the elevator and rooms are smaller. We stayed on the 3rd floor. My aunt and cousin had to go up in the elevator first because it would not accommodate more than 2 or 3 people or 2 people and their luggage. When the elevator doors opened imagine my surprise as my cousin is about 12 inches from the elevator trying to get into her room. The hallway barely accommodates a large rolling suitcase and two people cannot walk next to each other or even pass each other in the hall. The rooms were small. We had a double (2 twin beds) and what we thought was a large stuffed chair was actually a rollaway bed. Nice but took up much needed room. The Continental Breakfast was very nice. The staff is extremely courteous and helpful. I needed to mail a package back to the States (we were over weight) and the desk clerk got me information for UPS, FedEx, and DHL. The hotel is close to the metro and Gare du Nord and Gare du L'est train stations. Good location if you want to utilize the Hop On Hop Off Tour bus, the brochures are in the lobby and I highly recommend the bus tour, but the hotel is out of the way to other attractions and central Paris. The picture provided by the hotel of the boat on the canal in front of buildings is deceiving. It gives the impression that the hotel is right on the canal or at the very least in close proximity. I checked this site before we left for our trip and was looking forward to being near the canal. The canal is probably 1/4 of a mile away and really not large enough to accommodate the size boat shown in the picture. The location of the hotel, while close to many restaurants, the metro, train stations, and bus stops is not really in a very desirable part of town. As 4 women traveling alone we definitely did not feel safe being out once the sun started going down. I wouldn't recommend it for women alone. I will return to Paris but I will stay in another hotel.
Loved Adis and Cecile at the Villa Saint Martin
We had only 3 days to enjoy Paris and Adis and Cecile helped us manage our time by giving us accurate information and suggestions. They both assisted us immensely with reservations, transportation, restaurants.
All of the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful.
The hotel was clean and had easy access to public transportation.
Enjoyed our stay
We stayed here for 4 nights in August and had a wonderful stay.
The rooms are 10 square metres, but it's just what you expect for a Paris Hotel. The shower cabin is not meant for two, but it's very good compared to other hotels in Paris. Quality speaks in this hotel.
The people, maintance, service and breakfast are A-plus.
We'd definetly recommend this hotel to our friends to stay, especially for the value of your money.
Excellent tourist hotel
I stayed here at the weekend (103 euros per night) following some great feedback from friends. It's a 15 mins walk (or 1 stop on Metro 4) from Gare du Nord and 2 mins from Gare du l'est, and it's in a side road so is nice and quiet too.
The room, shower and WC, was small but lovely and we had two large windows that opened out to the overlook a very smart house accross the road behind a high wall!
Breakfast was an additional 9 euros each but was worth every penny and set us up for a busy day of touring. It's very near to the Metro line 4 so is great for getting into the busy touristy areas and it was on the main bus routes too.
We discovered an excellent local bistro 3 mins walk (out of hotel and keep walking round to the right and it's on the second corner) called 'Les 2 Signes' on Rue des Vinaigriers - excellent food and service and no touristy set meals in sight, just the real thing!
I think this will be 'the' Paris hotel for us in the future!
Nice, though extremely small
Based upon the reviews found here on tripadvisor, we booked the Villa Saint Martin in full confidence. Getting there, we were a bit shocked by the measurements of both public areas and the rooms of the hotel.
But yes, the tiny rooms were comfortable/clean/ well airconditioned, breakfast was very good for french standards and the staff did appear to be extremely warm/helpfull/friendly. So, overall a pleasant stay. Yet, not only negative reviews should mention the rooms being about 10 square metres....
A Perfect choice
I had checked the trip advisor forum constantly for tips on hotels and finally decided to use Villa Saint Martin as it was highly recommended. Well, I was not sorry!!! Friendly staff, clean room, fresh towels everyday, ample breakfast (buffet - so you can have as much as you like)The buffet was constantly replenished so if you had breakfast a bit late, you didnt have to have the scraps. The location was perfect - probably 3 minutes from Gare "l est and 7 minutes from Gare du Nord. I have never been to an hotel where ALL the staff was friendly - reception, catering and cleaning staff. The room also had airco. The reception staff kindly helped with directions and suggestions. Our luggage could also be stored at the hotel on the last day until we collected it. They are well-organised with this as they have a ticket system in place so one's stored luggage can hardly be taken by someone else. A big, big APPLAUSE for the Villa Saint Martin
My Mom and I checked into Villa St.Martin on June 12 and left on the 14th. The reception by the young man working that afternoon was absolutely wonderful. The room was terrific(very clean, quiet, air conditioning was so appreciated since the temps in Paris were HOT), the breakfast, more than adequate, and the location was perfect. My French speaking ability is poor, though I try, and the young man at the desk replied in perfect English. He was courteous and helpful in setting us on the right path in finding the Metro and telling us the lines that we should/could use. Then on Wed. the hotel stored our luggage so that we could continue to enjoy the Paris sights since our Eurostar train did not leave until six that evening. Thank you. Only wish we could have stayed longer. Will recommend this hotel to anyone heading to Paris. A real bargain.
First rate receptionist!
This is rather an odd review to write but all will be explained! We wanted to congratulate and recommend the receptionist at The Hotel Villa Saint Martin for his exceptional care and kindness. My daughter and I had arrived at the Gare de Nord to catch the last Eurostar of the evening to the UK having spent a very pleasant short break in Paris. At first our train was delayed and then cancelled. We were offered little explanatrion and no help from Eurostar, and my daughter and I found ourselves on the pavement outside the Gare du Nord at 11pm with no means of getting to London and nowhere to say. The problem was compounded by the fact that the passengers from two full Eurostar trains were in the same situation. We had no option but to start walking in order to find a hotel room for the night. My French for "Do you have a room available for this evening?" improved dramatically with frequent practice! We had walked maybe two Metro stops and unsuccessfully tried ten hotels before we arrived at the Hotel Villa Saint Martin. This hotel was also full but the receptionist was kindness itself. He rang a colleague in a nearby hotel and not only secured us a lovely ensuite room but also negotiated a very favourable rate (including breakfast!). He then took us out into the street to give us directions before shaking hands and wishing us "Bon soir". He turned a really distressing and unpleasant experience into one where we again felt safe and secure. We cannot thank him enough. It was truly exceptional service!
What a dirty room!!!
from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel's cleanliness was very poor and the room was very dirty. The pillow was yellow, the bedspread was dirty by blood, in the bed and in the bathroom we discovered, when we arrived, some hairs. This hotel doesn't worth te price we paid: awful dirt!!!

Surprisingly pleasant and comfortable budget place. Advantages: very amiable front desk; fantastically clean and modern, if small, bathrooms (great tub); great location to my mind, near metros, Canal St. Martin, and the hipster areas of Belleville. Disadvantage: lack of charm -- there is nothing at all special or cute about the look, but it is not shabby; very cramped spaces. The hallways and the room I had were quite tiny, but that didn't bother me for one person but anyone looking for more space may be really disappointed. I would happily go back.
Top Local Tips for Paris
Affordable lunch--southwestern style
Visit our new friends, Jean-Claude and Nathalie at their deli-cafe, Le Petit Quercy, 114-116 Boulevard Diderot, 12th arrondissement. Just as you exit Métro stop Reuilly Diderot. If you love duck and foie gras, order the menu of sandwich or salad. Less than E10. Try their Monluc wine from Gascony, then buy a bottle to take home with their custom-packed foie gras. Both incredibly well-priced. Yumm! Jean-Luc makes an incredible sandwich with the crustiest bread. We've seen this place grow over five years and now people line up out the door for the great value and quality, but the line moves quickly. Tell them the people from New Jersey sent you! Web: http://lepetitquercy.free.fr/ We stop there on every trip.
getting around in Paris
Use the RER, very easy, safe, and it is everywhere. Do not use the bus system as it is very confusing and not so clean.
Institut du Monde Arabe
There is a great view and a lovely restaurant/bar on the top floor of the Institut du Monde Arabe. Access is free and it's a peaceful place to spend the afternoon.
