Top Local Tips for Nice
Cheap - but not in a good way The Bien Venue restaurant, an English-run venture at the Place Francois in Old Nice, trades on its reputation for a good Sunday roast and the presence of fish 'n chips on the menu. A couple of unpleasant experiences I've had here include my mother's being refused a coffee one night at 11.30 (although the bar was still open - they were simply to lazy to bother) and, more recently, having been stung for nearly €70 for a couple of aperitifs, a bottle of wine, and two platters of cheese and charcuterie, . The feeling of being ripped off, 'taken' or stung came from a second platter having been brought although not ordered (it was offered, rather, as a top-up) and then subsequently being billed for three 'it's charged per person, not per platter'. If you eat here, keep a close eye on your tab and don't accept any apparent gratuities without asking what they cost! The bar was deserted other than for us, and we left with the feeling that we'd been preyed upon.
Chez Freddy, Cours Saleya, Nice Entertaining yet inexplicably condescending waiters. Waiters inexplicably yet condescendingly entertaining. Condescending, entertaining, yet inexplicably - waiters... Oh...and got a very upset stomach from bouillabaise...otherwise - food, wine and service great. All part of the fun.
Use the public transport! Nice is very expensive but the public transport isn't! You can go anywhere for €1 even Monaco.
