Historical Traveller Reviews of Westminster Concorde Hotel
Great hotel and location
from A TripAdvisor MemberRoom with a Superb View
from RobertaLGreat stay at the Westminster
from maggietravellerIn contrast to several of the other reviewers we found all the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful, particularly the concierge and reception staff. The only negative comment that we would agree with is the one regarding the coffee at breakfast, but the rest of the buffet was fine.
There are several negative references to the fact that the beach has to be paid for. As far as I am aware ( and I have stayed in La Perouse, The Meridien, Hotel Westminster and the Beau Rivage) all the hotels in Nice offer reduced rate but not complimentary access to private beaches. This is even the case in the Beau Rivage which is the only hotel that owns its own beach concession. At a rate of approx 18 euros per person per day this could add significantly to the cost of the holiday but Nice is not really an ideal choice for a beach holiday in any case as there is no sand.
We would recommend the Westminster for its wonderful central location, large rooms and friendly staff .The airport bus stops outside the door, the train is a ten minute walk away,as is the Cours Saleya.
We will definitely stay there again.
Disappointing visit
from A TripAdvisor MemberMost of the staff were pleasant except for a very surly older gentlemen on reception with longish hair who had a fair bit of attitude. I feel really disappointed as I had so been looking forward to my stay
not worth the money
from A TripAdvisor MemberExcellent Staff
from David HowellThe hotel is in a superb location, right on the sea front and in easy walking distance of the shops and the old Town. It is a lovely building with lots of character and they seem to have taken great pains to make sure that a good deal of this charm is retained when they undertake refurbishments.
We did not manage to get a room with a sea-view and, although that would have been nice, it is obvious that not everyone can be fortunate. The room we did have was a very good size, well appointed, clean and well serviced.
There was an excellent selection of food for breakfast and the bar has a friendly atmosphere and is stocked with a wide range of drinks. When the weather allows, you can sit outside on the terrace and watch the world go by along the Promenade des Anglais.
All of the staff were extremely friendly, efficient and keen to help and all seem to speak a variety of languages, fluently.
I would classify it as ‘4 star with character’ and have no hesitation in recommending it.
Great value
from MancmanWe hired a car whilst staying there and there are a couple of car parks in close proximity - the Massena is the most convenient. The car parks aren't cheap (about Eu30 for a 24 hour stay) but if you're there for a few days you can get special deals.
We booked our room direct with the hotel and got a very good price, and they upgraded us on arrival to a top floor room with a great sea view. There are standard, superior and deluxe rooms and we were in a deluxe. It was comfortable, with a nice bathroom. We didn't see the other types of rooms but, judging by the big price differential, I guess that the standard rooms must be very small and basic.
Breakfast was fine, and included in our rate.
The bar was OK if you can accept smoky rooms but that's not really an issue because you're so close to the centre that there's loads of choice of eateries and bars. We had a couple of drinks at the Negresco - expensive but worth it just to be able to wander round this great hotel.
In summary, the Westminster at our rate of Eu125 per night (special rate for 4 night stay), was terrific value, given it's location. It's family owned and would benefit from a couple of million being spent on it, but nevertheless a very acceptable hotel.
Historical hotel (some rooms with outstanding sea views)
from James_ThomsonWe stayed here for 1 night in January 2005 on our way back to Australia, and were very happy with the hotel - it represents good value for a tourist looking for affordable luxury.
The breakfast room has stunning frescos on the ceiling, and the continental breakfast was fine (what can be expected for a 4 star standard!).
I would recommend this hotel for travellers looking for affordable luxury in a great location. From what I have read in other reviews, satisfaction at this hotel really depends on which room you get allocated. I suggest requesting a refurbished room with sea views.
We were very satisfied.
Be warned !!!
from susywooWe had booked what they describe as superior room with sea view and were allocated a very shabby, dimly lit, grubby 70s B&B style room on the 1st floor. After complaining we were offered a room on the 5th floor which was only slightly better and described as one of their refurbished rooms. We realised then that the hotel was generally shabby, grubby and in desperate need of upgrading to the 4 star status it claims to be.
Breakfast is served till 11am. We arrived at 10.40 to find everything gone. When we asked the waiter for some coffee it was served (?!) to us in a ceramic jug without a lid and was so weak and luke warm we thought he must have made a mistake and brought us tea. The scraps of food that were there I would not have given to a dog. We left the dining room disgusted and had breakfast out, as we also did the next day. The general attitude of the reception and dining room staff was lethargic and uninterested. The room maids however, were very helpful and friendly as was the bar person.
We had arrived at the Westminster having stayed a night at the exclusive Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo - what a culture shock!!
The only thing this hotel has going for it is the superb location but there are many other 4 star hotels to choose from on the sea front - I would strongly advise anyone thinking of going to Nice to choose one of these and avoid the Westminster like the plague!!! (The Hotel Royal next door looks quite nice).
We have stayed in many 4 star hotels all over the world and this is by far the worst. So much so that it has prompted me to write this review. SO BE WARNED AND GO THERE AT YOUR PERIL!!!
Beautiful city/great hotel
from sadmatTop Local Tips for Nice
Transport Costs Taxis are extremely expensive so you really need to use the public transportation system train/bus. Get your timetables as soon as you get there. There is a tourist information centre near the casino on Promenade Anglais. We had lots of problems because we didn't have a timetable
Beach Just to let people know, they have rock beaches. Not really any sand, just rocks. Not very big rocks, just ones that fit in the palm of your hand.
Nice restuarants Had the best meals in France at these restaurants. The La maison de marie is in small couryard with flowers--romantic.on the main walking street (no cars allowed) near the Gallerie Lafayette (shopping mall). If you can not eat alot and want to share a meal use the french word "partagez".
