cozy and super-comfortable

for the price i paid ($46 for a single) this was an *incredible* place. it had all the basics and small stuff i needed---great location, spotless room+bathroom, helpful and friendly staff. while it may not have the best view of Nice that four-star hotels can offer, it is quite near the next best thing and you can always walk five minutes to see the beach anyway. the rooms are quaint, very cozy and spacious enough for me. you won't find it difficult at all to get settled in and feel comfortable. the hotel is located on Rue Massena, so you have quick and easy access to the restaurants (i recommend le petit maison de marie) and the gelateria. i would stay again at this place in a heartbeat.

Arrived late in October on night of national strike for two nights.
Owner waited up and made very welcome. Basic but functional room. Clean with hot water. Central near Place Massena with internet / phone facility next door. On pedestrian street with all types shops and cafes, but easy for taxi and bus. Across from Galerie Lafayette.
Would stay again anytime, if requiring one star central and welcoming small hotel.

We loved our stay at the Hotel Rex. You could not ask for a better location. It was clean, comfortable and great value for your money. Don't hesitate, you will not regret booking at Hotel Rex.

Highly recommendable!

Quiet, central location. Excellent value. Nice and helpful staff. Only downside was that the bathroom in our room was rather small, but as we're quite thin, we could manage.

Hotel Rex was the nicest hotel i visted while on my trip around europe. And i stayed in some very bad ones since i was on a contiki budget tour. Its Location is perfect...its about a 2 minute walk to the beach and surrouned by wonderful resterants and shopping facilites. The rooms are very very clean and have a nice cozy finish to them. The man who runs the hotel was very nice and very helpful, with the questions we had. I plan on staying at hotel rex the next time I am in Nice. I recommanded hotel rex to anyone. Its cheap, clean and has a great location.

Very well located in the middle of Nice. Rooms are clean, newly renovated and very charming. In this price range, I don't think you can find anything better. The staff is nice and very helpful. I will for sure stay there the next time I'm in Nice and will hence strongly recommend it.

We stayed at Hotel Rex a couple of days ago and we found were very happy to find a very clean room, with fresh linen and small but spotty bathroom. The location is excellent, central to everything so you barely need to take a bus or a cab to go somewhere. The rooms are nicely decorated and you can feel that everything is clean. The only bad thing was the lack of a fan in the room...in summer that would be great to have! The owners also have a good collection of guides that you can borrow and make your trip to Nice and French Riviera even better! Totally recommend this place!

A rare nice hotel in Nice

I loved my room at this hotel. It looked out on a courtyard, and the room itself was decorated in a simple, very pretty style. The owner is one of the few French people I met who was really nice. He made you feel at home. Unfortunately he only had one night open so I only got to stay one night. After that I searched for hotels and they were all really expensive and generally awful in Nice. If you can get to stay at this one, you should.
Just a note: Nice is horrible right now (summer 2005). There is construction everywhere because they are making a metro. The beach is full of dog poo and there are sleazy looking people all over trying to rip off tourists. If you can go somewhere else, I would.

Deserves more than one star

Hotel Rex was a shot in the dark hotel selection, but I am very glad I stayed there. The hotel is located off Rue Massena, a major pedestrian street, and is close to Vieux Nice, restaurants, and boulangeries. The concierge, who appears to own, clean, and live in the hotel, was very nice and helpful.
The room was decently sized, but very spartan; only a bed, tables and chairs. The bathroom was a nice size a well. Overall, don't let the one star rating fool you; this place is a gem and deserves a higher rating.

If you prefer the central location, clean rooms and economic holiday, Hotel Rex is ideal for you too.
It is just 5 minutes to beach and very close to restaurant and shopping area
The rooms are so nice and clean, we felt like we are at home.
Dont suprise when you see the building not renovated yet, the rooms are shining !

Top Local Tips for Nice

Eze If you're in Nice, make sure you take half a day to visit the village of Eze, just twenty minutes away by bus. This place is a little gem with wonderful views and lovely little narrow streets with quaint little souvenir shops. Make sure you visit the botanical gardens as they offer the best views. It will cost a few euros (I don't remember how much) but it's worth it!

Buses or train Buses are 1 euro 30cents for any single journey to anywhere ie Nice to Cannes or Menton to Nice and the train from Nice to Cannes cost 5 euros and 50 cents but the journey time on the bus was two hours and the train was about 30 minuites.Also when you get a ticket to travel on the train make sure you stamp it in one of the yellow machines on the platform prior to boarding the train or the guard may charge you a fine of 10 euros per person additional to the cost of your ticket.

Autumn and late spring Been to Nice mid October, weather was warm during day, but needed light jacket at night, just returned first week in June and was hot but breezy, still sometimes a bit cool at night. Not bothered by mosquitoes on either occasion and usually suffer badly.
