Excellent Cheap Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I'm just back from 6 nights in the regence hotel,

Accomodation was excellent, room was very clean and not too small, staff were very friendly and helpful, breakfast (roll, pain au chocolat, croissant and drink) was always fresh and tasty (and served from 7am - 10.30 am which is a bonus), and the location could not have been better (the dodgy area of nice is near the railway station this hotel is 5 minutes from the beach)

Highly recommended,

Chris Morrison

Regence was our favorite!

The least expensive hotel we stayed in, and the most friendly/beautiful. In a great location close to the #98 bus (to/from Nice airport). Longer walk to train but not too bad. Close to beach, market, and main street. Shower small but comparable to other hotels in area. A must stay for the price!

Loved the Regence

Have just returned from The Regence Hotel which was booked as a result of peoples previous opinions on this website....and you were all spot on! What an EXCELLENT hotel - excellent value for money, centrally located, EXCELLENT service, spotlessly clean. No complaints whatsoever. Yes - rooms are small but I've been in smaller! Great air conditioning by the way which is crucial in their hot weather.

Airline lost my luggage and it was no problem to Laeticia at reception to ring the service handling company and organise to have it delivered. Actually this lady has to be the best receptionist I have ever dealt with in terms of customer service.

I am already planning to return to Nice and will definately be staying in the Regence Hotel again.
Great bakery around the corner and for all of us ladies a fantastic accessory shop across the road from hotel where you have to queue up to go in to buy fab necklaces, bracelets etc for next to nothing.

Good continental breakfast offered with great coffee!
Looking forward to returning already

Great hotel!

Just got home after a wonderful week in Nice. The Regence hotel was very good. It was a short walk to the main shopping street and the beach, the staff was friendly, rooms were small but very clean. Our room was next to an alley where the restaurant kept it's litter so there were noises late in the evening AND early in the morning, but as we were in a city it's understandable.
We are planning to visit Nice again maybe next year and we'll definitely consider Regence hotel again!

Respeck is due!

Booked the Regence on the back of previous reviews and I have to say YOU WERE ALL RIGHT! One minor observation. Friday morning seems to be rubbish collection day on the Rue Messina so if you are in one of the front rooms be ready for an early morning wake up call. However, such was the excellence of the room, even my 6 year old daughter went straight back to sleep.

great value

this was the second cheapest hotel we could find yet it was great, with spacious rooms, friendly and helpful staff, very efficient air conditioning and shower, nice breakfast, very clean. our only criticism was the view of a builder's yard however this was quiet at night and fairly quiet in the day too.
this wasn't really a problem tho as we just needed somewhere to sleep! i definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a hotel in nice.

Excellent value

Booked this Hotel on the recommendation of a friend who stayed here last year and we were not disappointed. It is in an excellent position and the staff are extremely courteous and helpful. The rooms are quite basic but are modern and kept immaculately clean. If only there had been a bit more wardrobe space it would have been perfect.

Fantastic Regence!

I just want to backup all the reviews that have been submitted so far. This hotel was fantastic! We booked the hotel through easyjet hotels for an excellent price, and we weren't disappointed. The reception and lounge area is extremely well decorated and the staff make you feel welcome. The room was excellent with the bathroom being of a good size. There was no bath, but the shower was very powerful! The best feature of the room was the airconditioning, especially in the heat of the summer. It kept the room cold throughout the day and night, and can be adjusted if necessary.

We travelled with easyjet to the lovely Terminal 2 at Nice Airport. Make sure you use the bus number 98 to travel to the city. The hotel is just around the corner from the bus stop in a fantastic location, surrounded by restaurants and shops and only a few minutes walk from the beach!

Overall, I fantastic hotel and would definitely recommend staying again.

Stay here if you can

First time in Nice and flew by Easyjet which was very good. Also arranged shuttle from and to the airport to hotel. This was very good from the airport but failed to turn up for the return. If you are staying in the centre of NIce the No. 98 bus direct from terminal 2 is excellent and only costs 4 euros.

The Regence Hotel is situated in the centre of the pedestrian only area (but beware of how the french comply, especially early morning) close to a multitude of restaurants. The entrance is on the main street and first opinion as you enter is one of cleanliness and this is confirmed throughout the hotel. We had been advised that a room upgrade may be necessary but our room although plain and simple was very clean and well kept, the bathroom was also spotless (shower - no bath). There was only one single wardrobe and no draws in the bedroom but this was in no way a hinderence (you can keep your smalls in your case) as there is ample space to store your suitcases.
The breakfast although typically french consisted of 3 different pastries per person and as much freshly squeezed orange juice, tea coffee (different varieties) butter and jam, marmalade, honey and cheese, an excellent breakfast in a lovely setting.
Even though our bedroom was at the front of the hotel, above a restaurant we were not bothered at all with noise. The air conditioning in the bedroom is first class (and it is needed during the hot weather) it can be left on all night without feeling draughts or having to turn it off because it was too cold.
Overall this is a splendid hotel, very clean with excellent staff (all of them were cheerful and helpful). In genreal their standard of english and manner was way above the average for Nice. If you feel you want an upgraded room then by all means do so but for a couple the standard rooms are quite adequate and only cost approx £60 per night (this is per room, not per person).
There is also a small lounge in reception with a large plasma screen TV, but you also have TV in your bedroom.
Nice itself is a quaint place with a mixture of good eating places most of which have an Italian influence.
The market place, the main pedestrian area and the old town are excellent for eating and have a charm and atmosphere of their own.
If you can book this hotel and go to Nice then do so, you will not be disappointed.

great value, fantastic location

from laurad79
We have just returned from 4 nights in Nice at the Regence Hotel and it was FANTASTIC!! We booked the hotel based on the other reviews we had read, and we weren't disappointed. From outside we were a little unsure as it is based on the pedestrianised strip and is above shops and resteraunts, but once inside it was spotlessly clean, airy, cool and generally very nice. The receptionists were very helpful and check in took no time at all.

As said in other reviews, the rooms are basic and there isn't a bath in the bathroom - but the power shower is great and the bedroom is more than adequate as somewhere to rest your head after a day of sight-seeing or relaxing on the beach. Breakfast is served between 7am and 10am and is a continental brekfast (buns and croissants, orange juice and coffee etc). Rooms are cleaned every day and the housekeepers are more than happy to leave fresh linen everyday of requested. There is also a safe in the room which provides peace of mind if you are travelling with cash.

My biggest tip is to NOT get a taxi from the airport. They charge approximately 45 euros for a 10 minute trip - and it only costs 4 euros for a day pass on ther bus!! If you arrive at terminal 1 in Nice, when you walk outside on the left there is a small ticket office and the speak great English. Ask for centre Ville or a day pass and they will happily oblige. whilst in there pick up one of the small Nice maps on display. They come in very very handy!! The 98 bus arrives at stand 1 and takes about 10 muinutes. you can get off at either Place Massena (near the huge U shaped monument) or at the bus stop. Both are about 5 minutes walk away - and this is where the map comes in handy!!

My biggest worry about the holiday was that everyone kept saying Nice was expensive - and it is!! Eating out wasn't too bad depending on where you go. A steak is between 15 - 20 euros, mussels and chips is about 12 euros and pasta is about 12 euros. the most expensive thing is the drinks! A small coke is about 5 euros and half a pint of draught beer is approx 8 euros. My best advice is to walk around and comapre prices - especially head down to the old town where things are much more reasonable and the fish restaurants are fantastic!!

For a good night I can highly recommend Cafe de Nissa (out of the hotel turn right, straight over the Place Messena and it's on the right) Ottavio sings most night in there and will happily do requests. Daniel the bar owner is a great guy and will happily sit and chat. try the dark Leffe beer in one of the huge glasses. Well worth the 7.80 euros!!

Even though it might sound cheesy, the little train along the promenade is also a nice journey. it's only 6 euros and explains the history of Nice, the old town, the flower market etc and is good for getting out of the sun!!

If you are on a budget, try to buy lunch from one of the smaller shops rather than a restaurant, and eat it on the beach or in the square near the courts in the old town. my recommendation is a little shop near the grill restaurant (turn right out of the hotel, turn right at the place messena, cross the road, pass the grill restaurant and take the first right. half way down on the left hand side is a little hole in the wall.) The sandwiches are cheap and tasty!! Two sandwiches, two cans and two bars of chocolate costs less than 10 euros. Bargain!!

It was a great holiday (although I think I would have struggled if we had gone longer than 4 days - purely because of the pebbled beach - take flipflops cause it really hurts your feet!! And a lilo to lie on - you won't regret it!!). The hotel was spotless and the staff were great!

Final tip, please try and speak the language, even just a bit. The french really appreciate it and the service will be much better!! even if it's just please and thankyou!!

Top Local Tips for Nice

Open tour bus Even on the sunniest warmest day wear a cardi as it gets a bit breezy up the mountains!!!!

Great value bus travel All buses just have one fare price- 1.30 euros. So for this fare ypu can get to Grasse, Menton and Cannes, all journeys of over an hour, on a modern fleet of coaches.

Restaurant La Pizza Ok so it's not typical french food, but the pizzas here are huge, tasty and cheap. It's a great choice if you are on a budget trip. The service and staff are great. It's available in Nice and Cannes.
