Not smelly or smoky!!!

Just stayed at the Mercure, courtesy of Airmiles and I have to say that either the last two reviewers were unlucky, or they should have moved rooms! We stayed on the 3rd floor which is a no smoking floor and there was not a hint of smoke or bad smells. I have to say that for its location, clean rooms and friendly staff, this hotel is a gem!

I must agree with the reviewer from California, the bathroom although clean had a constant smell of sewage. The room was spacious but i was promised a sea view and ended up with a room overlooking Rue Halevy which if you craned your neck a couple of feet out the window was at the top of the road. There were no spoons to eat cereal and on asking the staff i was told there were none but i should use a tea-spoon.

yes, smelly hotel

If you are a non-smoker, do not stay at this hotel.
Hallways have strong stale smoke smell mixed with cleaning agent smell.
We had two adjoining rooms ocean view side, both rooms smelled strongly of the cleaning agent and smoke. (Even though it was supposed to be non-smoking rooms, it was obvious that the rooms are also used as smoking rooms). The bathrooms smell was even stronger – we couldn’t even use one of the bathrooms due to the bad smell.
As another reviewer wrote, the cleaning agent smell stays with your clothes and bags and needed to be cleaned after the trip.

The hotel is visibly old, but the hallways and rooms have been renovated with dark orange walls throughout. Staff was friendly and helpful (except one night person). English was not a prolbem. We did not eat at the hotel, lots of restaurants nearby, including the well-known Lenotre pastry restaurant and McDonalds downstairs. The rooms were good value, nice size, very comfortable beds, great view and location for shopping, sightseeing, restaurants etc. Showers have half doors, so water always leaks/sprays into the bathroom. Bathrooms are older. The double glass doors blocked most of traffic noise, but still can here some traffic on the main street. However, the smell of the hotel/rooms was very bothersome.

Very central location, right opposite the beach. Decoration is a bit wild - blue and orange but the room was a good size and clean with independent heating or air conditioning. Extremely comfortable bed. We overlooked a courtyard and had no noise disturbance. Buffet breakfast was very good with plenty of choice. Hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating, booked us in as soon as we arrived which was well before the scheduled time. Airport shuttle bus pick up is right out the front of the hotel and so very convenient. We had booked an excellent deal through airmiles and so were very pleased by our choice.

Low price and petit-gorgeous

Located in front of the beach, easy to walk to everywhere. As it was difficult to catch the taxi, we walked to the Nice station with suitcases when move (It took 13 minutes).
Large clean room, and comfortable beds. The interior was quite stylish.
Very good breakfast. Many kinds of fresh fruits, cereals, breads, mini bottles of jams, and drinks. The restaurant was bright and comfortable. Tables beside the windows were sea view.
The exterior of this hotel is so-so, not an exclusive hotel. But the inside was well designed and petit-gorgeous. Reasonable price was good, too.

a beach hotel in a great location

The Mercure Promenade (be careful - there are many Mercures in Nice) is in a great spot, right in the middle of the action of the Promenade in Nice. It occupies the left part of a large complex that also houses the Le Meridien Hotel.

Here's the bottom line: the Mercure is a good beach hotel. It doesn't pretend to be an elegant 5-star. It's basic, but the rooms are clean and have everything you'd need. I agree that the place (halls in particular) smells a bit of stale smoke, but my nonsmoking room was fine, with no odor at all. The rooms have been renovated in the past year; they are funky blue and orange, but perfectly pleasant. Bed was wonderfully comfortable and obviously new. Don't bother with the restaurant - you're 3 minutes from better, cheaper places. Desk staff was efficient and pleasant with me. Internet service on site. Splurge and get the oceanfront rooms - they are WELL worth it - fantastic views.

Think in terms of a nicer Holiday Inn, or a basic Radisson in the States...that's what the Mercure is. It's fine for a beachfront hotel...basic, a bit funky, and in a GREAT location. Get a good price and you won't beat it for a beach vacation.

Smelly Hotel

Stayed in this hotel two weeks ago and was extremely disappointed. First and foremost, the hotel and rooms absolutely stunk of stale smoke & cheap air freshener. Our clothes took on the smell and required a special washing trip at our following destination.

The staff were nothing short of disgraceful. In the breakfast room, staff were rude, helped themselves to the buffet and handled food with barehands.

I asked for milk with my coffee and almost had my head blown off.

Could not stress highly enough not to burn your dollars here.

Lovely rooms, shame about the desk staff

The hotel itself is in an A1 location, in easy walking distance of all the sights. The rooms have been recently renovated and were large and attractive, and had the most comfortable bed I think I have ever slept in.

The only downside was that on the day we left we stored our cases in the luggage room, we also needed to store our sons car seat as well, the desk clerk took exception to this ( even though the room was only half full)and muttered under his breath about it not being a baby store. I appreciate that they could say that it is not their policy to accept such things but it really annoyed me to have him muttering under his breath whilst we stood there.

Nice hotel and location

This hotel is in a perfect location right on the Promenade and near everthing. The rooms were large...compared to many European rooms...we had a Seaview which is worth the extra money. I think this is one of the most reasonable hotels I found with a seaview. I paid 155 euros per night...most other hotels with seaview were much more. Bathrooms were clean. King size bed had a down comforter that was wonderful. The airconditioning was very nice....and cold. The rooms were soundproof...no street noise. The bus stop back to the airport is right outside the door. The driver dropped us off about a block down when we came. 4Euros to the airport.

We would stay there again.

Excellent location, just a road across the beach. Restaurant around, you can have meal easily. Neat and tidy room. If you have money, upgrade to a seaview room. definately pleasant.

Top Local Tips for Nice

Parc Pheonix Nice - Grimaud - Port Grimaud A MUST DO visit and only 2 Euros per Adult - children under 12 Free really good value for money and time flies by - Must also visit Grimaud village and Port Grimaud (Venice of France)

Take the time to visit Monaco - a very short journey from Nice The train trip to Monaco is only 15 minutes from Nice and costs approx 6 euros return so is definitly something worth doing. This little principality is gorgeous and we spent a really nice day just walking round the port and up to the old town on the hill.

Airport transportation Don't waste money on taxis - airport buses to Promenade Des Anglais are every 20 minutes from the bus stationa at the hotel & cost just 4 euros each
