Plus points are good location and generally friendly staff. Negative points are that this is a run down hotel which is not 4 star and needs a lot of money spent on it. Tired and basic at best 3 star. Avoid staying here poor value for money.

Hotel Splendid is plenty satisfactory

"Splendid" would be a big word for the Hotel Splendid, but "very satisfactory" would be amply justified.
The hotel is exceptionally convenient if you plan to make sidetrips in the area by train, which is very practical. While the beach is only a few blocks down the street, the train station is only a ten-minute walk up the street. A bus to Vence and Saint Paul de Vence
(very worthwhile) is only a few blocks away and has good service.
Typical of French hotels, our room was on the small side, but it was comfortable. The standard rooms may be the best deal because they seem to be only marginally smaller than the others, but seem to be quieter. Our standard room facing the back was very quiet and light and had a very attractive view of the city and trees. The balcony was small, but very pleasant. The more expensive rooms seemed mainly to face the street, which might be a bit noisy. We reserved on the hotel's Web site and paid 175 euros a night, which we thought was a decent value.
We ate only one meal in the restraurant. It has a very pleasant city view and offers decent hotel fare. At 16 euros, the breakfast seemed expensive; we ate at nearby cafes for half the price.
It's worth noting that this isn't really a resort hotel. It's a city hotel with some modest resort amenities on the roof. The pool is quite small and not particularly inviting, though it might be welcome on a hot day. An irritating detail: no towels are offered by the pool. The sundeck has a pleasant view.
The "private beach" is simply another pay-to-enter beach on the Promenade that offers discounts to guests at certain hotels. As I recall, the discounted price was about 16 euros per person per day. Pleasant enough facility though.
Service at the hotel struck us as quite efficient, and high standards of cleanliness seemed to prevail.
Incidentally, the hotel is only a few blocks from the famous old Negresco Hotel, which is worth seeing. The well-known restaurant there has excellent formal service. The food was quite good, though certainly not as good as it used to be, and not a particularly good value.
All in all, the Spendid is a sensible choice for Nice.

We had a very enjoyable stay. From the time we arrived, the front desk staff was very helpful. Our room was a reasonable size by European standards. We had breakfast at the hotel as part of our room rate. There were both hot and cold foods. They seemed to be attempting to somewhat tailor the little extras to various convention or tour groups that were staying at the hotel. For example, on the last day, they offerred scottish tea. Other days I could not find any regular tea at all and if they were quite busy ocasionally they would run out of certain items.
The hotel was clean, the bathroom was large. location was excellent. We would stay again. I would not pay extra for the breakfast but as an included item it was very convenient and had numerous choices

Stayed there in 2004 for a week.
Rooms are ok but not excellent.
Reception staff were quite friendly.
Good to have the free Internet at the Lobby (1 PC).
Close to the beach front but at least 20 mins-30 ins walk to the City Centre, better take a taxi or a bus.

We stayed in the presidential suite which was absolutely amazing. Nice is the prettiest place in Europe I've ever seen! The staff at the Splendid was pretty nice and helpful but beware, if you plan on getting noisy stay away from the Splendid! The walls must be quite thin because we received some front-desk calls saying that we were much too noisy! I will definitely return to this hotel, seeing as it was gorgeous and near to the beach!

Stayed at the Splendid from Oct18/22 2005.When we arrived our room was ready at the early hour of 11am.We booked wiith Hotelopia and did not take the package that included breakfast.The room we were given 211 was a deluxe room with balcony apparently newly renovated lovely granite surfaces in the bathroom also jacuzzi.The room had everything you would want.There was some construction noise when we arrived but not to worry we were going out anyway.The next morning at 8.30am the noise and hammering was so bad that our teacups were shaking.Now I understand why we were given the "good "room eventhough we booked at a fraction of the cost that the hotel quoted us.
One of us went to reception to ask for another room and we were given a suite not as plush as the first room but nontheless very comfortable.They handled the request to be moved very well and we spent an enjoyable three days in room 520.We stayed there last year and while this is not the most luxurious hotel it is very clean and convenient and the rooms are pleasant.The breakfast which we had one day was basic to say the least and not worth even half of the 16.00 euro charged.It is ok if included in the price but at 16.00 euro .....they certainly have a sense of humour.
We ate at the Barracuda near Prom des Anglais on Mayerbeer that was even better than last year .They offer a tourist menu from 22.00 euro as well as an extensive general menu.We would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice convenient place to stay.We rented a car for 2 days from the rail station and if you plan to do this book in advance on the internet for half the price.

Lovely Stay At The Splendid

We stayed at the Splendid Hotel from 12-15 September 2005. On arrival at the hotel we found the staff extremely friendly and helpful, and our room was ready for us, even though we arrived mid-morning and check in isn't until 3pm.
Our room was very spacious with a large terrace, and we could even see the sea in the distance! We had booked a deluxe room, and weren't disappointed.
We didn't sample the breakfast as it was expensive (16€) and there are plenty of cafes in the area and along the Promenade Des Anglais that offer breakfast for 6€.
We found Nice a lovely city, the only low point was a terrible meal at Le Mirador restaurant in the pedestrian zone with an extremely rude waiter - avoid this restaurant! We can recommend Le Vicoletta, where we had a very good meal with pleasant and attentive staff.

Selected this hotel due to it's location and roof top pool. Although we booked 6 months in advance we were allocated one of the smallest rooms, which was clean and newly decorated compared to previous accommodation experience in Nice.
Reception staff unfortunately did not make any effort to be friendly and room was not ready when we arrived. Very poor customer service, a "hello/ bonjour" costs nothing.
Enjoyed previous year's accommodation better, hotel not worth the money.

I stayed at the Splendid for a week at the start of July . Little worried following reviews on trip advisor . Neednt have been . Rooms were well equiped and spotlless- Roger and gallet goodies in bathroom . I had a balcony with lovely view of sea even though it wasnt a delux room . Breakfast wasnt the best I have ever had . The restaurant seems to have improved and seemed to be busy each night . More like an excellent 3 star than a 4 star

I booked this hotel through sidestep and got an awesome rate at half price the standard rate. In addition, because we were staying 3 nights, we were given free breakfast, which normally costs 16 euros. The hotel was very convenient in that we could easily take the 98 bus from the airport and walk up to our hotel. In addition, it was close to the train station allowing us to visit neighboring cities very easily. The hotel itself is a 4 star hotel (European standard) and has a nice roof top pool which we used to lay out and relax. The roof also had some amazing views of the roof tops of Nice. Given that we got such a good rate, we were sure that we would get a room on the lower floors, but was surprised when we were given a room on the top floor, with a balcony and nice view. However, we quickly realized why we were given this room. There were some construction room being done in the bar of the roof top, and during the day, there were very loud drilling noises if we stayed in our room. However, we did not mind, because we were hardly in our rooms anyway. The bathroom was large and clean, however, there was definitely an odors coming from the pipes and drains which seemed old. Another thing about the bathroom which I felt strange was the ‘shower’. Their shower is actually a tub with a handheld showerhead. The tub is really low and there is no hook for the showerhead, so it is meant for you to sit and bath with the showerhead. As an American, I found this very uncomfortable and unusually, but I understand that many Asian and European countries bath this way. In regards to the breakfast, we were very happy that our breakfast came with our room since we were able to save money. However, if you plan to buy the breakfast, keep in mind, that it consists of a continental breakfast with some hot items, hard broil eggs, sausage, and scrambled eggs (which I overheard people complained that it smelled funny). While we were in Nice, the weather was overcrast and one day it rained, therefore we tried the hotel’s chez hugo restaurant and was very surprised at how good it was. We had been very disappointed with French food coming from Paris, so we were worried about this restaurant. However, we considered this restaurant the best restaurant out of the places we visited. Their jumbo shrimp salad was amazing! The last thing I wanted to mention is to review your bill. When we got our bill, they had calculated the rates differently than I had, so complained about the figure. After calculating it again, they corrected the problem. Also, before I arrived at the hotel and called to reconfirm our reservation and also make sure our breakfast was free, they were not aware that our 3 nights stay included free breakfast. I had to speak with their manager and fax them the advertisement to correct the problem.
Overall, I would stay here again if we got the same rate, and it included all those amenities. At the normal rate of $220 I would be less inclined. There are so many hotels in the area that a good deal isn’t very difficult.

Very nice hotel! Conveniently located and easy to find (from airport take bus 98 and get off at Meyerbeer-stop, which is in front of the Negresco, facing inland walk into Rue de Meyerbeer. You see the hotel after about 100 meters). We got a nice, clean room with a good bed and with a balcony overlooking the street. The double doors from the balcony to our room made it super quite. Staff was very, very friendly. Breakfast was good, so we decided to try dinner in the restaurant 'Chez Hugo' as well. We were pleasantly surprised by the delicious French quisine. It made us come back for dinner the next day too!
Unfortunately they were working on the pooldeck as we stayed there, so no experience there. It is a small pool, but I think it will look very nice after the new wooden deck has finished. We would definately stay in this hotel again!

Top Local Tips for Nice
Beware the roadworks as Nice constructs its first tramway You'll be a frustrated shopper if you're travelling to Nice during 2007 (and probably into 2008) as the town centre is just one big construction site due to the construction of a new tramway. You can only cross roads at designated points making it frustrating if you spot a shop you wish to get to. Also beware of the uneven surfaces near the roadworks. I imagine it will be even worse during the summer months when Nice will be more crowded.
Restaurants You won't find a bad reataurant. Do explore those of the Old Town
Promenade Nice is a very pretty city, the promenade was great, really came alive in the evening. A very romantic place to be. Be so very carefull with the scooters, they have no regard for anyone, which we noticed everywhere in France.
