Historical Traveller Reviews of Grand Hotel Le Florence

Great! Thank you!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I'm a little at a loss as to how this hotel has got several bad reviews on this site.

I'm currently in the middle of a 3 night stay at Grand Hotel le Florence and it's great. Friendly, helpful staff, who speak very good English (always helpful if your French isn't up to much, like mine), nice clean room, and in an excellent location, a quiet street just off Rue de Jean Medicin (the main shopping street), around 5 minutes walk from Rue Massena with all its lovely restaraunts and pavement cafes, and the beach close by. 10 minutes in the other direction is Nice Ville station from where you can explore the Riviera for VERY reasonable train fares. (3 euros each way to Monaco, for example)

Right next door to this hotel are two lovely pizzeria/pasta restaurants with outdoor tables, lovely food and great service at very reasonable prices.

A nice bonus is that for 10 euros you can buy yourself 24 hours wireless internet access at the hotel, if you should need it, which works out much cheaper than popping into internet cafes.

I have to say as a female travelling alone, for her first trip out of the UK at the age of 33 (yes, really!), I have been made to feel very welcome here, and safe.

The people of Nice are very hospitable generally and the stay has been lovely.

The only downside I have found is that there are no tea/coffee making facilities in the room. It's basic. Breakfast at the hotel is pricey, (around £9) but 5 minutes walk away are some lovely cafes serving continental breakfasts for a very reasonable price. And it's so much nicer to eat in the open air.

This is a good hotel for those travelling on a budget, like myself; no frills, but clean, comfortable, friendly and good value for money - I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to friends.

Good value hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Good value hotel in quiet, pedestrianised street. I was a single traveller and the room, although small, was fine for me. I would recommend that a couple/two people pay the extra for a bigger, superior room which I was offered if I wanted to pay extra. Room and bathroom were very clean. Close to shops, restaurants, bus and train station - 5 minute stroll to beach. Staff helpful and friendly. I would stay there again and would recommend it as a base to explore Nice and surrounding areas.

Great value hotel

from TinaNottingham
We visited this hotel in Feb 2005. Having read some previous poor reviews of the hotel we feel the need to redress the balance. We were allocated a family room on the top floor which was very spacious for the 3 of us and also had a very large terrace which would have been great had the weather been better. The bathroom was not the largest we've ever seen but was clean and functional. The hotel is well located - in a quiet street but only about 5 - 10 mins walk away from shops, restaurants and the Promenade Anglais. Breakfast was a good buffet with good choice and reception staff were friendly. We would certainly go there again - we think it represents good value for money.
Nice itself is undergoing extensive work to build a tram system to be operational late 2006 which meant some of the main streets don't look pretty but away from these few streets it was fine.

excellent value

from GaryDoyle
great value for money, in an excellent location with reasonably friendly staff. the rooms were small but well decorated, however the bathroom was very dated and was obviously tiled in the 1970's!!! Bar in the hotel was not expensive and well stocked. There were no other facilities for socialising in the hotel apart from the small hotel bar, but it was perfectly suitable for a few drinks after a meal out at the nearby 'Nice' centre. All in all i believe it's a good bet for an excellent location and nice clean rooms. I'd definitely stay there again.

Hotel and town

from A TripAdvisor Member
Grand Hotel Florence in NICE, COTE D`AZURE FRANCE
Good location, half way between station (10mins walk) and promenade
VERY QUIET. In pedestrianised area off main shopping street
Plenty of restaurants nearby
Family owned by young pleasant proprietors
Special rate through Teletext holidays GBP37.50 for 3* hotel double.
Good buffet breakfast @ 8.50Euros
Good bathroom(but no shampoo only bath gel)
Good bed AND spare pillows not always found in France
Will store luggage if late flight on last day
Round corner from bus 17 linking station and bus station .
TOWN of NICE
Airport only 5Km from town with buses to both train and bus stations
Modern town undergoing A BIG DIG to put in a tramway system so major diversions for pedestrians and traffic. At present.
Good selection of shops
Excellent value 1 day bus ticket @ 4Euros covering all local buses and airport bus
Eating out prices on a par with London but a huge choice including MacDonalds!!!
Normally mild for Europe. 18C for our first 2 days but then 4C and snow, the first for 5 years
Snow remained on hills above Nice and in the hill top villages. Very pretty against blue blue sea!
Lots of local specialities foodwise and for gifts
Old city is quaint and interesting
Huge port with luxury yachts
Coastal train service. You can hop on and off as long as you validate your ticket in the machine before reboarding. We went to Italy for lunch and visited Monte Carlo on the way back. Also visited Antibes and Cannes on a different trip
Plenty to do for a few days. Lots of museums and churches if you have time.
Recommended for a visit out of the summer season when it will be very hot and crowded.

3-star when it was new?

from bibimbob
I believe its official 3-star rating is partly based on the fact that the rooms has a mini-bar (not kidding). But the most funny thing in a twited way is the in-room safe. It is bolted to a removable shelf in the closet. So someone can theoretically remove the safe by either removing the nuts from under the shelf, or remove the shelf+safe entirely :) Our room was basically clean. But hey, you get what you pay for - and remember this is in France, Europe. Not to mention Nice is a tacky town anyway (imagine downtown Niagara Falls, Canada).

Ok for the price

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Grand Hotel le Florence is an ok hotel. My friend and I stayed there in June 2004. It is a little bit out of the way from the beaches and anything interesting to see. The front desk people were nice and spoke english. They also have a small lift which is helpful if you have a lot of luggage. The room was pretty big for a european hotel. The bathroom was also large. However, the ceiling of the bathroom was covered in mold and mildew which was really gross. There's a fridge and TV in the room which is nice. The hotel also has a lounge area w/ a TV and books or magazines to read. There's a supermarket and restaurant right next to the hotel and a laundry mat nearby if you have to do some washing. Other than that, its not great, but ok for the price.

Small ,freindly Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Spent 2 days here in September 2004. Staff very helpful and freindly. Rooms, although small were adequate. In a very good location, within walking distance of all major attractions. Parking in underground carpark outside the Hotel, concessions given.

Not a Place to Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had the unfortunate opportunity to stay at this hotel in July 2004. This hotel was grossly misrepresented. They state that they are a three star hotel which was recently renovated. If this was the case they should fire the renovater. The rooms were terribly small with a lumpy bed. The room was clean but had a musty smell each day. The shower only had a hand held strayer, which did not have a hook on the wall. The bathroom door did not close and the bottom of the door was rotten and moldy, from numerous floods. The walls were so thin that we heard the neighbors, just like a flee bag motel. When we asked the desk manager to recommend a place for breakfast, he was not helpful and would only tell us that we could purchase a breakfast within the hotel for an outrageous price. When we asked him to recommend a restaurant for dinner, he was not even helpfull. If we rate this in comparison to Motel 6 in the USA, this was Motel 2 and they do not leave the light on for the guests.

OK, but nothing special

from souter
Stayed here for one night at the start of Aug and it was ok. Room was small however and like an earlier reviewer we looked out over aircon units and buildings. Hotel clean enough and they have an arrangement with the multi-story car park for cheap parking if you have a car (but you need to go in the evening and get a special overnight ticket).
Very central location and fine as a brief stopping point.

Top Local Tips for Nice

Hire car in Nice We used LUTAM car hire (leaflet at our hotel) they are very friendly, quite cheap and will come to pick you up from the hotel (nice female driver). We had a brand new and very clean Nissan MIcra with aircon. I can't remember the exact price but it was very good value.

Read before you go Bought a Thompson pocket City Guide book - invaluable

# 100 Bus to Monaco was a HUGE hightlight! The bus was 1 Euro and it was so great to drive through all the little town, even though we did not stop.
