t get much sleep

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Aston for 5 nights in April 2005. The room was shabby, the bedroom furniture was falling apart, the air conditioning did not work, the plug sockets were coming away from the walls, some of the tiles were falling off the bathroom wall, all the tiles around the bath had black mould, there was an invasion of small ants all over the bathroom floor one morning. There is no ventilation in the bathroom/toilet. The bed linen would be better thrown out. The hot part of the buffet breakfast is best avoided. The only "hot" items are bacon and scrambled eggs, however they are not really hot, more like slightly warm. The cold breakfast items are OK. The worst part of our stay would have to have been the noise coming from the 7th floor three of the five nights we stayed. We were located on the fifth floor, and it was still loud enough to keep us awake. The noise ended at 3am. I was at reception at 2.30am to complain, but did not get a helpful response. The response was "parties booked." The furniture then seemed to be dragged about after the parties were over. This hotel was a four star, and on first appearances it looks quite good, but the room we stayed in was particularly poor. I would not recommend this hotel for a relaxing break.

A tired, aging hotel

I booked with Cresta and was expecting a reasonable room considering the hotel is rated four stars.

Upon arrival, we were allocated a room which had not been refurbished. The hotel has undergone only partial refurbishment. The room was extremely small and smelt musty. The bathroom was in a serious state of disrepair: cracked tiles, taps coming away from the wall.

After complaining to the receptionist we were upgraded free of charge to a refurbished room overlooking the fountains. The room was adequate but hardly salubrious.

The quality of the breakfast was rather poor.

I do not recommend this hotel.

Stayed at the hotel aston in nice during valentines weekend this year. I would recommend this hotel!! My room was really nice and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful.

Great hotel - give the breakfast a miss

Really nice hotel in the centre of Nice. Visited in December 2003 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The only point would be to not pay for the breakfast, better to find something out of the hotel.

Other than that a great place to stay in Nice.

Hotel is in a great location. Breakfast was fine hot and cold buffet. We stayed from 16th to 20th March 2005. Service better mid week than at weekend. Tried restuarant at hotel on Wed night food average. tried bar on 7th floor -very expensive prices.
Room small for a double room but very clean and bathroom adequate although shower had constant drip. We would reuse if back in Nice. All staff very friendly and helpful.

t bother with breakfast

We stayed at the Aston for four nights in March 2005. Overall it was ok, I guess, but not great. Particular problems arose from the bar/convention room on the 7th floor (we were directly underneath) and culminated in a noisy party which ended at midnight (ish) but then furniture had to be moved (dragged) back into place before the people who had hired the room could leave. At 2:00 am I was at the reception desk fuming at the receptionist who was admittedly polite but extremely ineffectual. A complaint to the manager the following day also left me dissatisfied.

The other main problem was with the "buffet" breakfast. Little choice and if you don't like rubber avoid the pre-packaged cheese portions. Oh, and don't have the "hot" choice... quite simply, it's not! and the bacon was greasy and the scrambled eggs sloppy.

Having said that, the staff were polite, the bedroom (small and not air conditioned) was clean and the public areas were ok too.

I would recommend the hotel's restaurant.... had a wonderful meal there, though a little more expensive than most.

Great location, nice rooms, helpful staff

The rooms were clean and comfortable. The breakfast was lovely. The staff, all English-speaking, were also lovely. Sleeping was very comfortable. We weren't bothered by any noise. The location was the best thing. It's in close walking distance to the promenade which has many shops and eateries. You're so close to your pick of patisseries, boulangeries, and cafes. You're also close to old town Nice which has open markets, weekly flea markets, and flower markets. You're also in walking distance to the beach, bus station, and train. If you want to go to Monaco, take the #100 bus which will get you there in about 30 minutes. Definitely worth the trip to check out Monaco/Montecarlo. All in all, a very pleasant stay. Well worth the price we paid.

facilities, location well above average

I spent four nights in this hotel at the end of September and despite the bad reviews elsewhere I feel the need to say that I found this a friendly, well appointed and superbly located hotel. The breakfast was excellent in very comfortable surroundings and the rooftop restaurant, offered a wonderful panorama of the Nice front and the castle.The service was excellent as was the food. My single room was more than adequate for me. One thing, though if you are thinking of swimming in the rooftop pool forget it - it is nothing more than a plunge pool. Mind you I preferred swimming in the sea anyway.

A Good 3-Day Autumn Break

This hotel was "recommended" through the agent we booked the break through. Having been spoilt by the huge rooms of the USA, we were aware that dispite the 4-star rating of the hotel that rooms in France (and the UK for that) were likely to be smaller. The room consisted of a double bed, small wardrobe, drawers, small table and chair and the usual bedside furniture. There was a television but there was only one English speaking channel (CNN), which was ok for the morning, but no good for channel hopping before bed! The bathroom was adequet, but for the lack of a handrail in assisting one get out of the bath/shower. Now, my husband and I love each other, but with the lack of any ventilation in the toilet, ie. no extractor fan or window to open - we were tested! The room was very clean.

We had a room on the inside of the hotel, which had no view at all apart from the rear of other buildings, being on the 5th floor we could just see the hills in the distance. I was a bit disappointed, but after speaking to other hotel guests who were in the front, they were upset the road was so noisy at night (mainly with those irritating motor scooters), I was smuggly satisfied that I had a good nights sleep!

The buffet breakfast was very good, plentiful and a good variety. The staff were smart and pleasant, especially Christophe who was very accomodating in helping my husband find the hotel car park. I recommend that anyone taking a car and wanting parking email the hotel first and book a space. It was 20 euros a day which we thought expensive, but parking is at a premium in Nice (the flower market was 22 euros per day).

Being autumn we did not use the hotel pool, but did notice you have to pay to use it!

The hotel is situated very centrally, close to the main shops and across a park and road to the historic centre which makes it ideal for walking around, and I am sure once the tramway is completed this will make everything even more accessible.

All in all we had a good break, and would certainly use this hotel again mainly because of its central location.

Good location, Small room

We stayed in Nice for two nights of an eight night tour of France in September 2004. The hotel is in a very good location -- close to the shops and to the beach. There were some problems, however. The room was extremely small -- large enough for the bed and to open my suitcase. And the room was not very up-to-date. There is a pool on the roof, but they charge hotel guests 10 Euros to use it. We arrived at about 5:00 p.m., and there was no hotel employees manning the pool. So, we were able to take a dip and soak in the sun for about an hour, free of charge. It's a beautiful view of the Mediterranean from the roof!!! The breakfast was very good, and the hotel was very accommodating to our tour group. All in all, it was a fine hotel. How much time do you actually spend in your tiny room when you're on the French Riviera anyway?!?!

Top Local Tips for Nice

to 200 bus the 200 bus somtimes does not stop at airport ...be prepared to jump off asap and walk the last half mile...allow an extra 20 minutes.

Authentic French Food We found that many of the restuarants and cafes had very similar menus that were more European than French. We found a "typical" french restuarant called "Le Septembre 22" on Rue Central in the old town near the Cathedral. It does a four course menu for 16.50 Euros and is fantastic!

Taxi fares Its a scandel. We had been advised it would be expensive so we were ready for it. 35 euro's for the 7 km journey, thats more expensive than travelling on the QE2? The bus is only 4 euro's but we had a little boy and 2 big bags so we just went for it. It was a nice way to be intoduced to nice though in a merc down the prom de Anglais.
