Historical Traveller Reviews of Gounod Hotel
Fabulous Bargain Hotel!
from A TripAdvisor Member
A fantastic hotel, especially for the price! My husband and I stayed at the Gounod for a week in early September 2004. I was nervous considering how reasonable the rooms were, (105 Euro a night!) especially since we were on our honeymoon. When we arrived they upgraded us to a suite for free. We had a HUGE room complete with couch, sitting area, etc. Hotel and decor was a little outdated but everything was very clean and the bathroom was new, updated. Hotel staff was VERY nice and happy to answer tourist questions. We went to the Spendid(sister hotel) every night to enjoy the sunset/view and cocktails. Location was great, close to the beach, old town and the bus/train station. We walked everywhere no problem. A great hotel for the price, I would definitely stay here again. Save your money and stay at the Gounod!
The outside of this hotel ain't much to look at, but the inside is fine... about what I would expect in Nice for 115 euro per night -- this included breakfast, which was nice. Good location, as noted below. Otherwise, everything basically met my expectations.
Excellent Location, Loveley friendly Hotel!
Just returned from a weeks stay at the Gounod with my Husband. We had a ground floor room which was very large and had two double beds. The decor was a little dated but everything was clean and tidy. The room also had a fridge which came in very handy for storing all the lovely fresh produce we picked up at the market! The staff were excellent and couldn't do enough to help ( especially when I lost our door key after indulging in too much wine!). The Splendid hotel next door has a lovely little roof-top pool and jaccuzzi with a bar area to relax in.
The location was fantastic with a 10 min walk to the beach, about 15 mins to the old town and 10 mins to the train station which comes in very handy if you don't have a car. We caught trains to Villfranche sur mer ( beautiful sandy beach), Eze (picturesque mountain village) and Monaco with great ease and would thoroughly recommend visiting all these places.
All things considered this hotel is an absolute bargain ( for example the hotel next door would have cost us an extra 130 euros per night ). It's not five star luxury but the large rooms, friendly staff and excellent location more than make up for it! Recommended!
Had three night here in September 2004.
The hotel is in a traditional French building which is in need of some TLC. However the room, although small was clean and importantly had air-con. The staff were very helpful and friendly.
The Gounod is the sister hotel of the Splendid next door and residents can use their facilities.
The Gounod give you a voucher to use in the Splendid restaurant "Chez Hugo"...beware!!! We used this once to find that the special wasn't available, there was, apparantly, no fish of any shape or form left, the wine came after the main course and the waiters were completely disinterested.
The Gounod is ok but avoid Chez Hugo!!
Great Location, Okay Hotel, Questionable Price
We stayed at the Hotel Gounod from 8/26/2004 to 8/29/2004. This hotel is old and very drab in decor. It could really use some redecorating throughout the entie building. However, the room we stayed in was large. We were assigned a suite even though we were only paying for a double, which was nice. The bathroom was small and somewhat dirty. The shower/tub had no curtain or barrier of any kind, nonetheless everytime we took a shower the floor would practically flood. There was also mold in the corners of the shower and tub. There was no electrical outlet in the bathroom to plug in a curling iron or electric shaver. The room did have air condition, but the vents were covered in dust and lint and looked as though they hadn't been cleaned in months. The bed was very comfortable and it was very quiet outside at night. Don't be fooled by a room with a balcony though because you'll be lucky if you can fit two adults on it, with absolutely no chance of having a table and chairs on it either. If you stay three or more nights breakfast is free which consists of scrambled and hard boiled eggs, sausage, ham, cereal, bread, pastries, cheeses, jams, yogurt, juice, and coffe or tea. You can walk next door to the Slendid Hotel and use the pool and sauna on the roof, each of which is VERY small. The sauna (hottub) was luke warm at best and we had to keep hitting a button literally every minute to keep the air jets flowing. The hotel is located only four blocks from the beach and is very close to the main shopping strip and several decent restaurants. The people working at the front desk were friendly and helpful and all spoke fluent English. We paid $162 per night, which I think is a little steep for the quality of the hotel, but compared to what you will pay at a hotel on the Promenade de Anglais it is quite reasonable. Two side suggestions: 1) Use one day to drive a half hour to the city of Juan de Pins where the beach is all sand and much less crowded. There are several little cafes, sandwich shops and water sports right on the beach. 2) Make the drive to Monaco and spend a day there, you will be amazed by the beautiful scenery along the way and in the city of Monte Carlo.

We stayed at this hotel in March of 2004 and loved it. The staff was gracious and very helpful. This was one of the few places in Europe where the restaurant suggestions from the staff were perfect. The hotel was only a few blocks from the beach and we also enjoyed the pool privledges at the sister hotel next door. Also, when we left to catch our train and realized due to 9/11 that there was no luggage storage at the train station, the staff at the hotel was helpful enough to keep our luggage the day we checked out so we could continue to enjoy Nice.
Clean and Updated Classic

Perfectly happy with this property. Location is just a few blocks from the beach, just as the streets become quiet and peaceful. You can walk easily to / from the Nice train station, shopping mall, restaurants and beach. We stayed in a larger room with only an ally view, but most rooms are smaller (typical) with nice views out onto the street. Staff was very helpful in handling and delivering our lost luggage. We would stay here again.

Stayed at the Gounod for 4 nights mid-June 2004 based on the Frommer's book . I booked a suite for 4 people. We had 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (no kitchen). The rooms were spacious and nicely decorated. More then 3 nights included the breakfast which actually offered eggs and sausage besides the customary croissants. The hotel is inbetween the beach and the train station. I would stay there again--unless I upgraded to a beach front hotel.
A qualified recommendation
We spent four days in Nice at the beginning of June and enjoyed it very much. We booked the Hotel Gounod after reading the reviews on this site. The hotel was fine, and as other reviewers have mentioned, the rooms are large (well, ours was anyway). Two wardrobes and loads of space, unlike those business hotels which have just enough room for an overnight bag.
Breakfast was fairly basic, but OK, and they knew how to make a pot of tea!
My only complaint would be that there was no shower curtain, so if you showered standing up, everything in the bathroom got wet. I tried various contortions to avoid this, but the only way to use the shower without any water splashing onto the floor was to squat down in the bath. Think of Gollum in Lord of the Rings and you'll get the picture...
We used the rooftop swimming pool at the Hotel Splendid, which was great - jacuzzi too! You just walk into the lobby there and go up in the lift.
From looking around, I'd say that the Hotel Splendid is a much more modern hotel, with better facilities, but you'd probably pay around £40 - £50 per night more, so that's not really a fair comparison.
The Gounod is about 5 minutes walk from the best part of the seafront, and about the same distance from the main train station, so it is ideally situated.
I'd recommend it - but check if your bathroom has a shower curtain first!
great place to relax- nice a/c
We stayed here June 2004 . The beds were extremely comfortable, nice bathrooms and gorgeous balconies you could go out and sit (there was a table and chair) The best part was when we came back from sightseeing there was real cool air conditioning. Alot of the hotels in france have a fan or ventilator that they called air cond.
THis was close to the beach and also close to the train station for us to walk to our next destination. Didnt need to take a cab the location was great.
Top Local Tips for Nice
Good restaurants in Nice
Absolutely recommended: La Maison de Marie (rue la massena), Brasserie Flo (rui guittry)
Don't be afraid to use the local buses at €1.30 per journey. Very helpful staff at the bus station. Bus trip to Menton and Monaco a must.
If you like live bands or rock music, this is a great bar, with excellent service. The bands XY and resident band Running Bird were very good and played a wide range of music from Deep Purple to Metallica. A great atmosphere.
