Worst Front Desk In France

After having toured the south of France for three weeks, we were scheduled to return from Montpelier to Paris to catch an air France flight back home. Prior to our Miami, FL departure, I made a reservation at Hotel Les Myrtes through an online booking agency for a june/12/07 check-in and june/13/07 checkout.
We arrived at Les Myrtes at about 9:30 in the evening and drove directly to the underground garage and took the elevator to the ground floor where we were met by a black as coal, square-shouldered man in his 30's, wearing a red, sleeveless shirt more suitable to a basketball court than to a hotel front desk. His manner was unpleasant from the start and only worsened at every interaction we had. Upon arrival I informed him that we had an early flight to catch (7:00am) so when I found the garage door locked at 4:00 a.m. and looked him up to politely ask it to be to opened only grumpily did he agree to do so, adding that "the garage was scheduled to open at 6:00am not any earlier than that.." the worst part was yet to come. When we were ready to leave the man simply refused to give me directions to the airport, dismissing my request with a wave of the hand and these exact words "go that way and turn that other". Mind you, this was at 4:00 a.m., pitch dark and with not a soul to be seen in the streets...! Montpellier is a big town, the airport rather some distance away, we had no map, no directions and as can be easily understood had an awful time finding the airport, almost missing our flight which would have been disastrous for us. Luckily, at the last minute a city street cleaner saved the day for us and provided accurate directions. Do know that I speak French fluently and am also a courteous person. I can but assume this poor soul just has something against Americans, my advice: stay away from Hotel Les Myrtes in Montpellier, which by the way also has paper-thin walls.
p.s. as soon as I left the front desk, I realized the man had overcharged me for parking. The garage rate posted on the elevator door was lower than what he charged me but I chose not to make an issue of it. I had also incurred some additional small charges totalling some 20 euros but he refused payment by credit card and demanded cash only, and no receipt.
