Top Local Tips for Colmar

Traveling in the Alsace We flew into Strasbourg and rented a car at the airport. It is an easy one hour drive to Colmar. We visited lots of wine villages north and south of Colmar. They were short and easy drives but it can be a little confusing getting in and out of Colmar which is actually a small city---so get a good map. You can drop off your luggage at the Hotel Martin then park free at a city lot about 2 blocks away. We were always able to find a parking space. We did not need the car in Colmar because nothing was far away and it was easier to walk than drive. I recommend getting Rick Steve's most recent France guidebook and also Fodor's to give you descriptions of the medieval villages, what to see, directions etc. Also Rick Steve's travel video on the Alsace is what inspired me to go. You can buy it from his website or probably find it in your library's video travel section---or TiVo it from a PBS channel. It really conveys the beauty, charm and friendliness of the region. Good food and wine, too!

Restaurant Bartholdi Medium priced restaurant. The food is excellent, mostly local (Alsace) food. Any of the choucroute dishes are a winner. The dessert cheese, Munster toped with cumin seeds, was great.

Dine on a canal or flambe a tarte! Dining in the 'Little Venice' area was nice but our best experience in Colmar was lining up at the marquis in the main square outside Hotel St Martin for a 6 euro Tarte Flambe and bottle of local Pinot Gris which we devoured whilst sitting outside the old Customs House, watching the world go by. Brilliant night.
