Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Diderot

simply lovely, romantic and picturesque!

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is absolutely adorable, especially if you go during late spring or early summer when everything is blooming. The room was spacious and very clean. For the price, ambiance and location, you just can't go wrong. I would especially recommend it to couples looking for a romantic getaway because it is so charming and pretty. Its approx. 20 minutes drive to the nearby chateaus and is an even shorter walk into the adorable little town of Chinon. Also, Chinon is much less touristy than Amboise. See photos and enjoy!

Unforgettable !

from walinne
We stayed three nights at the Diderot (from 09/07 till 12/07) and like all the other reviews, we were enchanted! We had a beautiful room (number 3 if I remember), very large with lovely furniture and a lovely view on the courtyard. The first to welcome us was
"Boubi" the cat with big "purrs", and Martine and Laurent made us feel very welcome too from the first moment! The hotel is very calm and as everybody says, the breakfast is divine! Those jams! We are sure to go back one day.

Charming and Friendly

Spent three nights at the Hotel Diderot in late May after reading the reviews here. Sent an email to inqure about availability and got a very prompt response from Laurent. They were full one of the days we were interested in but fortunately did have two rooms available the other 3 days. We stayed in one of the units in an annex building to the right of the main building that had a private entry (that we could lock) and 2 bedrooms up the stairs. Rooms were very comfortable with modern bathrooms and a bargain at 57 euros the night. Parking in the courtyard was full when we arrived but Laurent directed us to a public lot just down the street that was free.

The family that runs the hotel did a great job of making us feel very comfortable. They recommended places to eat and a beautiful walking route to the chateau (more like a fort) that sits at the top of the town. Highlight of our day was breakfast when we got to sample some of the fantastic homemade jams that Laurent makes. Unfortunately the jams are not for sale but you can buy a cookbook they sell (which we did) that includes some of the recipes.

While the hotel is located at one end of town, Chinon is small enough that you can walk most places from the Diderot. Chinon itself is a charming town and is a good base to explore the Loire Valley. We had an excellent meal at Les Annees 30 but didn't get a chance to explore any other restaurants.

Simply Charming

Family owned, family run, warm caring hosts in an atmosphere which all small hotels should use as their model.
We saw the hotel cloaked in snow...a rare treat indeed, with gorgeous gardens at rest. Inside the doors however the crackling fire, warm hospitality and a country breakfast that unsurpassed any we have seen.
Room was wonderfully decorated in fine antiques, bath and necessary facilities up to snuff and of all.. plenty of hot water.
Not only do the propriters speak excellent English but they kindly encouraged and tutored the guests who wish to practice their French....truly patient folks indeed.
We rate the Diderot "Excellent" in all regards and can not recommend it highly enough.

Excellent in every way

My husband and I just returned from a trip to France and I couldn't wait to write to let everyone know what a fabulous hotel the Hotel Diderot turned out to be. In addition to being extremely beautiful, clean, and charming, the staff at the hotel could not have been any more helpful or pleasant. They went out of their way to answer our questions and ensure a very enjoyable stay.

I cannot recommend this hotel enough. You will not be disappointed.

Charming and Hospitable

My husband and I just returned from an 8 day trip to France and stayed 3 nights in the Loire Valley. We were kindly welcomed on our first night in France (following an all night flight to Paris, bus ride to the train station, train ride to Chartres, and drive to Chinon!) by kindly, english speaking Laurent at Hotel Diderot in Chinon. What a lovely place in the middle of such a historic and charming town. Our room was spacious with a very comfortable bed, very large tub and bathroom and a breakfast that any King of France would have enjoyed. We found our that Laurent, himself, makes the jams and jellies from local produce every year! I was torn between making reservations in Chinon or Amboise as Rick Steves suggested. After touring both cities, I was happy to have chosen Chinon for its quaintness, great location and for Hotel Diderot. I am not sure what it is like in the summer, but the courtyard looked like it would be beautiful filled with flowers that were just beginning to peak out of the ground. ???AC??

Loved the Hotel Diderot

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I have stayed at the Hotel Diderot twice in the last year and plan to do so again at the end of this year. We have enjoyed our visits to Chinon and the western Loire and we particularly enjoy our stay at the Hotel Diderot, a charming hotel within easy walking distance of the town center, as well as within easy driving distance of the Loire Valley chateau, the western Loire wine country and the cities of Tours and Angers. We look forward to staying at the Hotel Diderot because: 1. Although the hotel is an 18th century manor house (beautifully restored), the rooms are clean and comfortable and the bathrooms are modern. It’s the best of both worlds: old world charm and modern conveniences. If you are looking for a new, glistening hotel, this isn’t your kind of place. If you are looking to stay in a place that is an authentic part of the landscape, that has the ambiance and character of a small, family owned, boutique hotel, you’ll like the Hotel Diderot. 2. The English speaking Dutheil family of Laurent, Francoise and Martine (and Boubi, the house cat and boss – ask Francoise about Boubi’s story) are very friendly, helpful and informative and do everything they can to make the Hotel Diderot your home during your stay. In addition to the hotel amenities, they can provide you with restaurant suggestions, Loire Valley and Chinon area day trip itineraries and names of local merchants to cater to your holiday needs (e.g., pharmacy, wine, picnic, clothing). 3. Laurent makes some of the best tasting and most unusual jams you are likely to find anywhere (e.g., pear, apple, nuts and spices). Some jam and goat cheese on fresh bread, a croissant or a brioche makes for a great start to the day. Also, Laurent knows the local wines and will gladly suggest wines and wineries to suit your palate.

The Dutheil family are gracious hosts and the Diderot is a gem of a hotel. We look forward to our next visit.

log fire

from A TripAdvisor Member
Great value for money. Scrumptious breakfast with delectable home-made jam served in front of a roaring log fire in the 15th century breakfast room. They make 65 different sorts and they've even written a recipe book so you can make them yourself when you get home!

The hotel is old and gorgeous and the people young and lovely.

I'm going back in the summer when you can have breakfast on the terrace - a bit cold for that in February!

Not impressed

from chandeb
The hotel looked better from the outside. Inside, it was rather old and dingy. After seeing all the wonderful previous reviews, maybe we didn't get one of their better rooms? It is located on the outskirt of town though everything is walking distance. Service was very good, the room was big, plus it came with a house cat who checked out our room one morning. For food, I recommend Oceanic in town but not Jardine Cote.

what a gem!!

from kiwifern
We chanced upon this place when cycling around the Loire and our only disappointment was not being able to stay two nights!
The rooms are devine and the staff wonderfully helpful.

I'd recommend this hotel, but book in advance - it's hard to get a room!

Top Local Tips for Chinon

More castles than you can shake a stick at! Chinon is a quaint little town on a river in the Loire Valley. It is centrally located for visiting the many chateaus and castles in the area. Cehnonceau, built out over the river, is probably the most famous in France. You could probably spend a good week in the area if you love this kind of history. Also recommended is Azay le Rideau and Villandry.

Les Années 30 Fantastic restaurant with a 1930s theme.

Great restaurant at good price Try this one: LES ANNEES 30, 78 Rue Voltaire, Chinon, Phone: (247) 933718. the food was fantastic and fixed price menu from EUR 27.
