Top Local Tips for Caen

Good place for history- recent and ancient This town has it all...from William the Conqueror to WW2. People here are friendly and helpful and the town is comfortable on foot. We came mainly for Le Mémorial, as must see for those here for the D-day touring cycle. Plan to spend most of the day at this museum, and skip the fast-food restaurant at Le Mémorial in favor of the nicer restaurant further in...we had an excellent meal and were able to rest our tired feet. Take time to see the castle and the final resting place of the Conqueror and his Queen (buried across town - must have been hard to be married to in life!). It's a good jump-off point for explaining history before moving on to Bayeux and the D-day beaches. As a city, it's user friendly.

Try the Ferry from Portsmouth We took the overnight ferry from Portsmouth and for less than the price of the Eurostar and a hotel room (and in about the same overall amount of time) you can both travel and rest and start your day in Normandy. We took the Brittany ferry in Commodore class which got us a suite and a continental breakfast. When we woke up, we were already there and had to hurry to get off the ship. There is a shuttle bus for about four euros that will take you downtown to the train station where you can rent a car to tour the region.
