The premises are immaculate, the service polite and friendly, the rooms are comfortable, clean, and larger than the average, the rates are fair. The location is perfect and, being on a pedestrian street, tranquil but with all the action, restaurants, and shopping a few paces away. We are going back to-morrow, surely the acid test.

Top Local Tips for Bordeaux

Attractions were shut! If there is anything you especially want to do, check opening times or arrange tours before you go. When I went in April I tried twice to get into the Musee Arts Deco - the first day it was theoretcially open but there was "pas de electricite", the second day they told me it only opened at 11 and that was just for an exhibition and the main gallery did not open until 2pm. The Grand Theatre would not let me in to look around and advised me to go to the tourist office and book a tour. I fancied a short river trip but I could only find one boat trip operator and their next tour of the port was not for 2 days! Fortunately I had booked a wine-tasting trip in advance. It was very good but the bus was nearly full. Presumably the other tourists were equally relieved to have found something to do!

Must Visit Bordeaux Tourism Office and Website If you are planning to visit Bordeaux as a tourist, the best place to start doing research is the city's Tourism Office online: http://www.bordeaux-tourisme.com/uk/decouvrir/unesco.html. The city has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site as of June 2007 so the tourism office has gotten very organized about giving information over the phone and running guided tours for the city and the adjacent wine growing region. The office is very helpful and they do pick up the phone to make advanced bookings for tours. They have also intelligently uploaded onto their site many of the brochures found in their office; these may be downloaded as pdf files.

Worth getting lost in Bordeaux Of course most people stay in Bordeaux to visit the surrounding wine country, but it is a nice city with it's own share of history. Lots of local streets with shops and bars with a fair amount of history mixed in. There are two cathedrals worth visiting. Most sites can be easily walked to. Check out the main tourist office for local maps. Across the street is a center with lots information about the wine country.
