Top Local Tips for Bayeux

Bayeux outings for families Be sure to stop at one of the Calvados cider producers in the region. You can buy fresh cider, juice and, of course, the eau de vie (42%). We stopped at one returning from Omaha beach, and it was a nice change from the serious nature of the D-day touring. In addition, don't miss La Pointe du Hoc, between Omaha and Utah beaches...the bomb craters and twisted remains of the gun batteries drive home the furious onslaught both sides endured during the invasion battles. My kids loved this place, and could gain an understanding of what happened better than by just looking at old film footage and relics. Stay on the main paths, though, since there is still the risk of live ordinance (don't worry, it's fenced off). Bring a windbreaker or other jacket, as the wind on the point can be very strong. Finally, don't miss the Tapestry in town...hard to imagine it's almost 1,000 years old. It has been carefully restored and the audio guide is excellent - there is even a version just for kids.

A Great Trip of WW II Sites with Battlebus We went on a two-day trip of the WW II sites with Battlebus tour group. It was certainly worth the money it cost. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, and took us to places we would never have found on our own. This tour company is also recommended by Rick Steves, and we concur.

Visiting Bayeux There is lots of free parking near the market. Once parked, the town has a wide range of sites to go to. Beware that the museums (and many of the shops) shut betwen 12 and 2 - but the restaurants around the Cathedral are open then. We loved Pat a Pate and Le Pommier - but there are lots of other places to go to. The Cathedral is spectacular and has a crypt that can be visited. The Tapestry is very well displayed in a well signed building near the Cathedral, and is only a few Euros to visit; this includes access to the museum, the well researched introductory film (in English or French) and a bundled in audio guide to the tapestry itself. I was prepared to be underwhelmed by the tapestry - but it is definitely worth seeing, and (perhaps) surprisingly funny. A great thing to see. The tapesty was commissioned by Bishop Odo or Queen Mathilda, but probably executed in the UK
