Very Charming Hotel - A Must Stay!

This darling hotel was the perfect place to stay while in Provence. The rooms were clean, had air conditioning, decorated in Provencal colours and very reasonable pricing. It had a courtyard that was quiet to sit and enjoy the ambiance which added to the charm of this hotel. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

4-star service with 2-star price!

This is not a 2 star hotel -- it is a hotel with 2 star price but 4 star value! The garden is delightful, the breakfast is sumptous and economical, the room is nicely decorated and large, the staff helpful and friendly, the location cannot be more central. The free internet access is a great touch too. No details escaped the hotel's attention, such as making fresh towels available in the morning before the maid make up the room. In summary, a great hotel with great value!

Arles great deal

Chalk up another raving review for a perfectlly charming, well-located and surprisingly affordable touch of southern France with great service and a staff of English speaking and very helpful employees. A little hard to find due to sudden road signs and parking a bit far away, but they make up for the minor discomforts with disarmingly good cheer and fairly good food. And its right across from the arena and a couple of blocks from the forum.

Nice Little Hotel

We stayed two nights here in Aug 04 and found the place to be very nice and cozy. The staff was also very helpful.

My only advice would be to think about how much time you would like to spend in Arles itself; we found the town to be pleasant but slightly boring. We only spent 3-4 hours exploring Arles proper, and that was perfect.

This site has a number of wonderful reviews about this hotel. In fact, so many that you probably don't need to read any more. However, I enjoyed the hotel so much that I feel obliged to submit a review. Our stay was in July, 2004. We had just come from Aix-en-Provence and found the Hotel Le Calendal to be the hotel we had been hoping to find in France. Small, but very charming and very relaxing. I loved the area for breakfast and tea with the outdoor area wonderful at breakfast. Our room was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was modern and very clean - always a hit with me. There is no elevator so that's another good reason to have the wife pack light. Having a computer for guest Internet and e-mail access was an unexpected bonus as I could catch up on baseball news from the States. The location was great with the Arena literally next door. We found a number of outdoor cafes just down the street offering a variety of cuisines and prices. If our travels take us back to the south of France would definitely stay here again.

A delightful and charming hotel

We were lucky enough to get the family room (#46) overlooking the Roman Arena. It was neat sleeping in the shadow of a 2000 years old building!

The family room has two compartments, separated by a French door. The 1st compartment has 2 single beds, a table, 2 chairs, two separate large closets, no windows. The 2nd compartment has a queen size bed, 2 nightstands, a writing desk, a chair, TV, a shuttered window overlooking the arena.

The bathroom, access from the 2nd compartment, has a good size tub, good shower head, wash basin, toilet and plenty of space for towels.

Each compartment has its own air-conditioner that keeps the room nice and cool. It is also very quiet (both A/C and room).

They listed a children play area which is nothing more than a corner in the lobby with a couple kid-size chair, TV with DVD and a collection of cartoons on DVDs. There are children books and travel books. However, the chess and checker play sets in the patio are fun.

The hotel offers its own parking for 10E/day or nearby parking structure for 7E/day. Their own parking spaces are in a VERY small garage outside the building, probably need valet to get in/out. The parking structure is an easy 5 minutes stroll. It is own by the city and you get a credit card for in and out privileges. This is a good deal, no need to worry about where to park or tiny spaces.

Our favorite restaurant was Lou Caleu just a few doors down.

We recently spent 4 nights in this charming, comfortable and well run hotel located in the centre of the most historic part of Arles. Our view was the Roman amphitheatre! All this and air conditioning too. The delightful breakfasts served in the courtyard garden should not be be missed either.

Stayed 10 July 2004. This hotel is a gem. Really a 3.5 star but no lifts. Staff friendly and helpful. tastefully decorated throughout. We had 2 rooms. The double was a good size overlooking the tea garden with a good bathroom. The other was a very large twin with large bathroom, both rooms very clean. Tea garden a must for refreshments during the day. Serves a good buffet breakfast. Giant chess and free internet helps waiting time for the Ladies. Great location. Step out of front door and the Roman Arena is meters away. Very central to everything else. Very nice town with good atmosphere and well preserved & presented.
Highly recommend.

My wife and I stayed here in July of '04. This is a truly wonderful hotel in a lovely, historic town. Just top-notch, all the way, and the food is good, too.

A 3 star hotel listed as a 2 star. Very reasonable, central and sparkling clean. Will stay here again when I return to Arles.

Top Local Tips for Arles

Roman Antiquities Museum A tremendously educational facility! Contains 1st Century sarcophagi, Roman ruins, mosaics, and top notch educational explanations, models, etc. This museum would probably be of more interest to adults and those interested in history than young children (or anyone with less than a 10 minute attention span). Parents might find themselves amidst the "I'm done! I've seen all of it. Can we leave now?!" set or, for those even less patient, "This is borrrrrring" members of the family (who then find a nice place to sit down and text message all of their friends on their cell phones and wander the world of cell phone internet browsing). Too bad for them! This museum is absolutely full of fascinating items (that you can often walk right up to!). A very nice feature is the layout; it is spacious, allowing the museum visitor to stand back and get perspective. We really loved this museum and would recommend it to anyone.

L'Atelier Restaurant Do not miss it - reservations a must.

Rent a car and drive around the countryside In spite of the high cost of car rentals and fuel in France, renting a car to explore the countryside of Provence was one of the best decisions we made. Discovering all of the small towns, old villages, outstanding restaurants, and abandoned forts and castles was the highlight of the trip. The bigger cities which you can get to by train were interesting, but not the same as finding yourself in the middle of an olive grove or an 11th century hill town. Arles was small enough that driving and parking were easy (less true for Avignon). It was also central to many towns and sights within an hour's drive. We would recommend using it as a base so you don't have to keep checking in and out of hotels in every city you visit.
