When an otherwise well-maintained hotel has not had significant work done to it in decades, just walking into the front door may feel like travelling back to the 1950s, which can be a depressing experience, as it was here. The only thing such a hotel may have going for it is the price, and perhaps the friendliness of the staff. The people at Central & Anzac were friendly enough, but the room I was given had a horrible smell coming from the bathroom, as if somebody with an intestinal problem had just went. I arrived too late to look for another hotel, but I checked out and left first thing in the morning. It isn't quite the worst place I've stayed in, and maybe some of the other rooms are better, but I would have gladly paid double to sleep in a room with clean air.
