Somber and gray

Although well situated, clean and with well appointed rooms, this hotel was somber and gray. The staff were officious and unfriendly. Altogether it was most unwelcoming. The Somme itself is a hard place to visit because of its awful history, but the Royal Picardie gave us no respite from its surroundings. It was is if the tragedy and loss of life of WWI had seeped into the building through its gray stone walls. While it was a good base from which to visit the local sites, I was very happy to leave.
