One of the worst hotels I have ever used
Needing a place to stay in the rather grim town of Agen, we plucked this hotel straight from the Logis de France guide, thinking that it would at least provide accommodation up to a certain standard. How wrong! This hotel is expensive, rotten, and trading on past glories with no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and is fairly representative of the town as a whole. My travelling companion and I had booked a room with two beds. Despite a faxed confirmation from the hotel, the receptionist - who throughout the entire evening never came off the telephone, even to deal with us - initially denied all knowledge of the reservation but eventually deigned to give us a room. The reception area is dark, cramped and cluttered and wouldn't look out of place in a Bangkok doss-house. The "elevator" is little more than a two metre tall dumb waiter - my companion and I could not get in with our luggage without one bag balancing on my head. Our room had a creaking double bed in the middle and a single up against the wall which doubled up as the sofa to sit and watch TV, and therefore consequently sloped away from the wall at such an angle that I slid right off it no fewer than three times during a tiresomely sleepless night. The bathroom does not appear to have been refurbished since De Gaulle was a boy - cracked, mouldy tiles, a chipboard "cabinet" around the sink which was half rotten away, a shower head mount that drooped under any weight at all, and a bath that was enshrined on an enormous platform so wide at its base that anybody with a left leg was effectively unable to sit on the toilet - in the town that is the epicentre of France's prune industry. The towels, which appear to predate the Revolution, had individual name tapes with not only the hotel's name, but the room number as well as if they reserved the particularly rotten room and towels for troublesome guests. Le Perigord is situated on a busy roundabout at the foot of a flyover on the main route into town from the north. The double-glazing was therefore something of a blessing for noise control, or at least it would have been had all of the window panes been intact. Since it was also 30 degrees Celsius that day, the airconditioning would also have been more useful had it been capable of producing cold air, which it wasn't. Despite the hot, sticky weather, it was actually more comfortable to sit outdoors in the park right next to the hotel despite the park being overrun with rats. We didn't dare brave the restaurant for dinner and were so disappointed with the rest of this awful town that we ran for the hills in the morning without risking breakfast either. The final sting in the tail: having taken the trouble to specifically request a room with two beds and being quoted the price we were then charged a EUR 7,00 supplement for using the second bed!
