Historical Traveller Reviews of Radisson SAS Plaza Hotel

s Usual High Standards

from CB100
I stayed here for one night on a combined business and social trip. I am a fan of Radisson hotels, particularly when on business, and this place reminded me why. My room was plush and elegant, service was good and it had a very nice bar.

The location was also perfect - a two minute walk to lots of bars, five minutes to shops and ten minutes stroll to the harbour.

Highly recommended!

Not too great for a business user

from Big_Blue_Traveller
Had a one night stay here this week on business and was not overly impressed. I was not bothered about the location etc, but needed all the basics. Hotel room was comfortable but getting room service was a nightmare. I arrived at around 9pm local time, very hungry but ended up having to hassle reception to get room service as their number was permanently engaged for over 30 minutes. When the food did come it was very pleasant, but I would have liked it rather earlier.

The other issue was the wireless internet access. The hotel proudly talks about having free access throughout the hotel - but there are no instructions on how to get it! Again I called reception - they said someone would come up to sort it out. No one showed up for 20 minutes - I called reception again and they finally gave me the password for the service. Again - good idea to provide the access, but could have been delivered better.

Final problems were in the morning. Firstly - the breakfast area is way too small for the hotel and there was no one placing people and ensuring that people on their own did not take up tables for 4. Then there was a complete shambles with taxis. They asked me to book a cab the night before which I duly did. At the appointed time, I turned up at the front door - no cab. 15 minutes later - still no cab, yet a steady stream of "walk up" guests with no bookings were being put in cabs by the bell boy. The whole system seemed flawed.

Anyway - it served its business purpose, but I would not have thought it very suitable for leisure travellers.

Long weekend in Helsinki

from reggob
I stayed at this hotel with my wife along with another couple for four nights (01/06/06 - 05/06/06). We had a rate of €250.00 per room per night for the 1st night and the following 3 nights were at a rate of €108.00 per room per night including breakfast. Our room was excellent while not overly large it wasn't postage stamp size either. Breakfast was buffet style and had quite a variety, you will easily find something to eat. Reception staff were welcoming and efficient and had no problem making dinner reservations for us each night. The location of the hotel is excellent in that it is quite close to the main railway station where the Finnair Bus drop off from the airport is located and at a transfer cost of €5.20 per person each way for a 35 minute transfer journey is well worth it. The main tourist sites and shopping area are located quite near also, in fact Helsinki is a relatively small city and can easily be explored by foot. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Helsinki as a short break destination and the Radisson SAS Plaza Hotel as your base while there.

Great place to stay, even if the start was shaky...

from wkndtripper
Visited this hotel for the Easter weekend this year with my boyfriend. We had a lovely stay, however we did get off to a bit of a funny start...
Our first impressions of the hotel were somewhat shaken by an initial mess up with our booking. It took the reception staff three goes to find us our correct room. On one of these attempts we found ourselves walking into a room that was already occupied by another guest - thankfully they weren't in the room at the time (just their case etc was there) so major embarrassment was avoided.
Once we got our correct room, all was fine. It was very small, but perfectly formed. We had to have the air-con on all the time which was annoying, but I suppose that's standard in most hotels that don't allow you open the window. The breakfast was excellent, and we really appreciated that it ran until 11am and not 10am like most other hotels. All in all, we had a lovely time despite the initial mess up.

Hits the spot

Despite being part of an (albeit upscale) chain, this place is really rather nicely done - bright, modern and well designed.

Superb location, excellent buffet breakfasts and helpful staff. Good for business trips and city breaks alike.

Great location

We stayed at Radisson Plaza in Helsinki for Christmas Holidays, the location is really good: in five minutes walk (or even less) you easily reach the esplanade and right in front of the hotel there is the bus station for public buses to the airport (€ 3.60 each way). The restaurant is excellent but really expensive - as almost everything in Helsinki expect salmon of course :).
Do not expect anything cosy though as the hotel is really business-tailored.

Best location in the city

This is the best location in the city, at the corner of the city center. Comfortable rooms and nice service. Great breakfast buffet, although scramble eggs could be improved. Highy reccomended.

Great Location

I was travelling alone but the welcome was friendly and the atmosphere unintimidating.
The Art Deco history was overplayed as the interior is largely standard 4* hotel but overall a pleasant place to stay.

Recommended Hotel in Helsinki

I stayed at the Radisson Plaza in August 2005 and would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay in Helsinki. The hotel is decorated in an art noveau style - lots of light wood and clean lines. It was centrally located near the main railway station, but in a quieter area than most of the other hotels in the center of town. You can easily walk to the outdoor market, mueseum of contemporary art, ferries, shops, etc. The hotel has a decent restaurant and a nice bar. Staff were helpful in terms of planning trips, dry cleaning, recommendations for restaurants. My room was a good size and very clean. I would also highly recommend a day trip to the medieval town of Tallin in Estonia for anyone visiting Helsinki.

No complaints, great place!

Great location, very central.
Great breakfast, nice sized rooms. No complaints.

Top Local Tips for Helsinki

Day trip to Tallinn This is a must, as Tallinn is such an interesting place, and has a completely different atmosphere to Helsinki. We caught the Linda Line catamaran which only took 90 minutes - and it is worth upgrading to "Linda Class" which includes refreshments.

Tallinn Daytip Dont forget your daytip (or overnight stay) to Tallinn. Plenty of ferry options available and only 1 1/2 hours each way in the summer, and a mighty fine example of a medieval city. Sorry Helsinki - Deffinatly more interesting than you are.

Airport to City There is a shuttle bus that takes you from the airport directly to the main train station at the heart of the city. This is a convenient option if you have booked a city center hotel, and is much cheaper than a taxi ride.
