Very enjoyable

Having read a number of the reviews on this site, I took the advice of another writer to ask, in advance, for a corner room. This was duly arranged with no problems.

The views are stunning, and I found the room and bathroom to be very bright / airy.

This was a 40th birthday treat for my wife, and we both really enjoyed staying at this hotel. We found that (at 9am) there was no queue for breakfast, and that there was plenty of choice.

The whole process from check-in to check out was very smooth - no problems. We found the furnishings to be very comfortable, and adored the 70's styling.

I would very much recommend anyone to stay at this hotel - and the location cannot be beaten.

Although the exterior of the hotel looks like a 70's office block, the foyer itself is incredibly stylish. Unfortunately, the day we checked in the computer system wasn't working, so we waited to check in for 30 minutes. We eventually arrived in our rooms and even though I specifically stated that I wanted a double bed (it was our anniversary) we had a twin! So, went back down to reception, they were rude, unhelpful and said that they couldn't guarentee a particualr room type - so basically tough luck. It took 30 minutes, plus asking to see the manager, plus bringing down a card in the room that stated 100% satisfaction or your money back before they finally said they would move us. NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR A 5 STAR HOTEL. The room itself was again sylish, but rather small. Breakfast was a little disappointing, food poor and we had to queue for some time to get in. Gym on the 21st floor. was small and uninspiring. If you do go, pay a little extra for the royal club rooms, which are slightly larger and breakfast is served in a better restaurant.

Picture it - husband and I walked into the expansive designer/minimalist lobby of this 60's style hotel to check in for our 3 night stay. The friendly staff congratulated us for having just been married (incorrectly) and advised we'd been upgraded! We set them straight but hoped the upgrade wasn't undoable. Thankfully it wasn't.

The most striking feature of our large corner room was the unbeatable view of the city. Two walls had windows all round & the hotel towers over most of the town (see pics). Our room was stylishly and newly furnished with Arne Jacobsen chairs, big all white king size bed and a delightful orchid plant in flower. That's not to mention the complimentary champagne, local sweets and free drinks at the bar (Oh unwarranted upgrade!)

Bathroom was huge with lots of windows - all new, modern, perfect. We also had fluffy robes, slippers, tea & coffee facilities and iron - all the comforts of home.

Breakfast is served at a slick restaurant on the top floor of the hotel, with fantastic city views. When we arrived early the selection was best.

Room service was limited at our late arrival time, but we didn't go hungry. The fresh open faced sandwiches we had came at a price but hit the spot.

All up a lovely, comfortable hotel, within walking distance of the main pedestrian mall and central station. It has a memorable funky character - doesn't exude the faux warmth of other large chains, but who wants that. The focus is very much on Danish design. Not all brand spanking new, but certainly not tired. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Fabulous in Every Way

I chose this hotel based on Tripadvisor reviews. We reserved a "corner room" and I HIGHLY recommend this type of room at this property. Our room was on the 18th floor (room 1803); the hotel is 20 stories high. Fabulous views of all of Copenhagen including Tivoli Gardens right below. It had the most amazing windows that went right to the corner of the room...see photos. I was worried that this hotel might be too "60's Danish design" for my taste but I loved it and would stay again without any hesitation. The condition of the room was excellent, true original 60's modern design but obviously recently renovated. The beds were a dream! The very nice bathroom also had an expanse of windows. Our rate included a buffet breakfast in their restaurant on the 20th floor. Fabulous way to start the day. The location of the hotel couldn't have been better. Walking distance to almost everything. High speed internet was very expensive at about $22 per day US.
The staff was excellent especially the concierges. They recommended a great restaurant about 5-10 minutes away by cab. It was called Hansen's Bar and Grill. Great place, not touristy and superb food, style and service. The name makes it sound like a roadhouse but it was actually a very sophisticated, all white decor restaurant located in a beautiful townhouse.

The deluxe bus tour that departed from the nearby Palace Hotel was the only disappointment. We should have taken the less expensive double Decker tour bus with on and off privileges.


Our room rate was $320 US per night...not cheap but worth every penny. We would do it again. Keep in mind that there is more than one Radisson in Copenhagen.

Location, location, location!

I am a travel agent and just stayed at the Royal on April 22nd and 23rd, 2005 for a hotel inspection weekend. The SAS Royal a great choice if you want to be convenient to EVERYTHING. The train station is around the block, Tivoli Gardens across the street, and a short walk to the Stroget (pedestrian shopping area). I stayed in a single occupancy room (small, about the size of a cruise ship cabin, but functional!)...all rooms have nice views of the city. If you book a "standard" category room, make sure to ask for a CORNER ROOM on a higher floor....windows all around and great views, and the rates are the same as for other "standard" rooms. Decor is 60's Arne Jacobsen style... stark, with soothing colors of turquoise and greens that mixed well with the blond wood panels on the walls. Beds were comfortable and perhaps a bit soft, but a comfortable down comforter on the bed and both a down and foam pillow made me feel at home and gave a great night's sleep. Every room is equipped with wireless internet service and has a simple desk, television, a minibar and coffee service. The European shower fixture was fine, but one morning the water temperature kept fluctuating between cold and scalding. Simple bath amenities (vegetal soap disc, orange body gel and lemon shampoo) were unremarkable and seemed a bit cheesy for a 4-star hotel. The breakfast buffet was ample and lives up to American standards, with good choices of breads/pastries, hot entrees, fruit and cheese and the ever-present smoked salmon, juices and cereals. Staff at the hotel was pleasant and helpful. All in all, a very positive experience at the Royal, and the location can't be beat.

Hotel Design is FABULOUS - so much fun - from the elevators to the hallways to the VERY funky and fun inset lights in the room walls. View was tremendous and the location of the hotel was super convenient. Right next to Central Station (within a block - take the train from the airport - fast, cheap, easy, and you're one block away from your hotel). Also right near Tivoli, the main amusement part, and at the start of the main walking drag, Stergot (pronounced "strudel" for those in the know) which traverses the downtown of Copenhagen, past all of the shops and through some of the squares. Great hotel, great service, concierge was extremely helpful. Would stay there again for sure.

Stylish and sedate

This whole was very peaceful and very retro chic. It was a sort of staid stylishness matched by the very polite staff, willing to help, but still keep their distance. If you are looking for something really hip, I'd recommend either the St. Petri or the Admiral, but for a designer sort of 60's cool, this was the place. They were a little dramatic about their restaurant and claimed you had to stay in a suite to eat there, which seemed very cynical and shady as a ploy to get you to upgrade rooms on check in. The location was very central to everything and was a major point in the Royal's favor. We did go see room 606 which remains with the original 60's furniture. Very unique and interesting but I can't imagine why anyone would want to stay in it and pay through the nose for that sort of impractical conversation piece. Hotel was a good experience, but I think I'd try another Copenhagen location next time.

A trip into 60s design

As far as design is concerned, this fabulous hotel really deserves a 5 star rating. Lobby and rooms are outstanding. Special care has been brought into rooms design and equipment, especially the lightning and overall furniture. Rooms are spacious and comfy, even standard ones. Views from upper floors are breathtaking. Efficient, helpful and friendly front desk staff.
However, we experienced many problems during our entire stay : very poor overall housekeeping service (eg. enter the room without knocking at the door !), no heating control (rooms extremely hot, especially at night), breakfast very disappointing (no better than any overage 3 star) : cold eggs and sausages, no variety in time (could become a problem if you stay there for a week).
Having said this, the Royal Hotel definitely remains the best option for quality hotels in Copenhagen if you are looking for real and original design hotels. Now, if you prefer fashionable and trendy places, better go for the Skt. Petri (is also located in a far better area).

We just returned home from 8 nights in Copenhagen and picked this hotel based on TripAdvisor comments. We were very happy with our choice. The staff is wonderful, helping with everything from finding a chiropractor after my back went out to helping us find restaurants open during the long Christmas holiday. We booked two adjacent rooms and were given a discount since we were there during a slow period for over a week. The only negative was the noise. We were on the third floor and traffic whizzed by all night, with horns honking and sirens screaming. The hotel offered ear plugs since this is often cited as a problem.

The location--right across from Tivoli Gardens--could not be better.

If you love design...

This place just oozes design. Orginally created by Arne Jacobson it has been restored to its orginal (dont worry everything is new) and is a great palce to stay if you are into design. The sauna is tiny (and I cant even remember if there was a gym) and is probably not what you would expect from a top notch place, but then I stayed there for the design not for the gym.

The location is very central (next to Tivoli and train station), but then it is hard not to be central in a place of the size of Copenhagen. The main center of town is in 10 min walking distance.

I loved the room, colour scheme, bathroom, just everything. Would not stay anywhere else.

Top Local Tips for Copenhagen

Extremely Easy to Get Around on Public Transportation I used the Copenhagen(CPH) Card to get around the city on the bus and METRO. It covered my train travel to Roskilde,Helsignor,Hillerod,Louisiana(Modern Art Museum) and to and from the airport. I took the train to Malmo and Odense. These trips require paying a very reasonable fare that is not covered by the CPH Card. There are trains every 20 minutes to Malmo. There is an hourly one-stop express train to Odense that makes this a 75 minute journey.

Off the beaten track If you stay at the SAS Royal, you would naturally walk out the hotel and go in the direction of Tivoli Gardens, Town hall square, Strøget (shopping area).......but try to go in the other direction, follow Vesterbrogade and turn down to Halmtorvet, these areas are up and comming with a lot off small independent shops, restaurants and quirky places. It used to be (and to some degree it still is) the red light district of Copenhagen, at first glance it might seem a bit seedy but this is the super trendy hot spot of Copenhagen.
