Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Alexandra

Terrible

from LASP
The hotel web site is very very misleading about the standard and size of the bedrooms. We booked a standard bedroom for 2 people which turned out to be the size of a (small) single room in any hotel I have stayed in. On the second night we upgraded to a bigger room which was fine except that there was insufficient heating. We had reception send up two free standing heaters to make the room warm.
The upgraded room had addtional problems: 2 light bulbs broken in the bathroom: one of the sinks was blocked: Despite telling reception of these problems they were still not resolved by the time we left 2 days later.
The peoplon reception were friendly but clearly there was no management to ensure that problems were fixed. In fact during our 3 night stay there was no eveidence of management at all!

Pleasant Hotel

from westernsydney
We stayed her in October 2006 with a family of 5. We had two rooms. The hotel is well maintained and clean. One of our rooms was a little small but adequate.

It is centrally located. Breakfast was included and was excellent. we also went to the restaurant one night and found it a pleasant experience. Staff are friendly and helpfu. English skills of the staff are good. There is a guest lounge with free internet.

Our only real issue is that the hotel is not air conditioned. The windows open but once opened it is very noisy (no noise if kept closed).

Would go back again.

Would stay here again

from Unimproved
This hotel is in a great location--just down the street from Tivoli, Stroget, City Square. It was hot, but we opened our windows and had no problems. If you are in Copenhagen during a hot spell and crave quiet at night, you might consider a different neighborhood because it was pretty noisy two of the three nights we stayed here. The staff was very helpful (airline had lost my suitcase) and there's an internet terminal. The restaurant has wonderful dinners and breakfast buffet was good.

Questionable Business Ethics

from TwinButtes
I booked this hotel through Expedia, of course, paying in advance. When I arrived at the hotel, they politely informed me that they had erred and they were overbooked. They had made reservations at another hotel and paid for the cab to take me there. I was assured that the alternative hotel was the same price and quality. It was not at all. I checked Expedia and found that the Alexandria was $57 more per night than the hotel they had booked me into. It was officially a 1.5 star hotel versus Alexandria's three star rating. I have been trying since August to get a refund for the difference but without success. The staff at the Alexandria maintained that Expedia was responsbile and Expedia maintains that the hotel is responbile. It is quite a neat scam: overbook, keep the rental paid in advance and put the unsuspecting (foreign) guest into a cheaper hotel, and pocket the difference.

Not a real 3 stars...

from French
We ended up in this hotel, booked via an internet travel agency by a business partner.
Upon our early arrival at 10.30 AM, we were told that check-in was not possible (this was OK with us) and that we had to come back at 2 PM.

We came back at 3 PM, received a room key, took our luggage and got to our room to discover that:
1) it was very small
2) the so-called "clean" room had not been cleaned at all !!!
The reception desk asked us to wait for 15 minutes (we do wonder about this time frame being enough to ensure a real "cleaning" of the room...).

Husband enquired about the possibility of getting another room, and preferrably a larger one... and they nicely told us that it was possible, but we would have to pay extra for this!!!
I have to say that I got a bit angry at that time and told them that they should think of doing something for us, because they made the mistake, rather than asking for extra money!!!

Then the key for another (larger) room suddenly appeared....
One good point: the bed quality was fine, ensuring a good sleep.

However we won't recommend the hotel since walls were thin like paper... Fortunately our neighbours were not too noisy...
Daily room cleaning proved erratic again (forgetting to change towels, hoovering was not done, etc...)
Breakfast buffet was OK but service was also erratic sometimes (tables were not always regularly emptied or buffet items were not regularly re-filled).

The staff was very nice in general, but also very young, and we felt there was some kind of lack of experience in some cases.

Another point: the hotel is located on a very busy boulevard and traffic can be quite noisy, although there is a double window system.

To conclude: the hotel is not a damp, but it's not wonderful, specially in relation to the prices they ask for, but I think this is a common problem in Copenhagen, based on reviews from other travellers.

Great location, helpful and polite staff

from CCRR
This hotel is in a great location, as others have already noted. We stayed for four days July 1-5. The room did get a bit warm, and there was no air-conditioning, but there was a breeze when you opened the window. Traffic noise is loud at night if the windows are open, but it was muted if you closed both windows, although you could still hear it. If you live in a big city you probably won't be bothered by the street noise. The staff was always very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good with a variety of choices, including boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, meats, cheeses, cereals, lots of bread choices, waffles and juices. Our room was plain but had a very large bed. We requested a non-smoking room and received it. The bathroom was very small. The shower is a bit bigger than a phone booth with just a shower curtain and the drain in the floor, so the bathroom gets damp. They supplied extra pillows and towels in the closet, which was nice. I was a little worried after reading some of the previous comments, but I would stay here again. The Italian restaurant (Vesuvio's) catty-corner from the hotel was good and reasonably priced with generous portions.

Friendly, clean, central location

from Frank_Ontario
We stayed here June 20 - 22, during which Copenhagen was probably going to hit a record yearly high for heat at about 28 C, 83 F, and the rooms are not air conditioned. With the windows open there was a breeze, and it cooled off at night and was bearable. It was a bit noisy however as the hotel is located on a main street. Earplugs would have been useful.
After reading comments on this site, I booked an upgrade designer room which was like the brochure....comfortable but far from extravagant, nicely decorated, reasonably large, queen size bed, non-smoking, good shower. Extra cost was DKK 350 per night. (USD$55 +/-)
If you want to use your 115V electric razor, you'll need to bring your own adaptor....they didn't have the right type at the desk.
There are English TV stations with Danish subtitles and commercials, so at least there is something you can watch if you want to.
The hotel staff speak fluent English and are very friendly, helpful with directions, getting taxis, etc.
The buffet breakfast that was included was very good and had all your basics.
The best feature of this hotel is its location, very close to Tivoli Gardens, city hall, shopping and walking distance to Rosenborg and Amalienborg Palaces.
I would recommend visiting Tivoli at night to see the 11:00 p.m. HC Andersen show instead of during the day. We especially liked the museum and crown jewel exhibit at the Rosenborg Palace. Best place we found to eat was along the waterway on Nybord St....all kinds of bars & restaurants. You can also get boat tours there.

Great site from which to explore Copenhagen!!

from fazzie1
Hotel is in a great location, at the corner of the City Hall main square, near Tivoli Gardens (which is closed during Jan - mid Apr, be warned!!!) and 5 minutes from the train station. This is what gives it a 4 out of 5 in my view, and not too pricey either!!

Staff were very helpful, room and facilities in room were good. No net curtains on windows though and we faced one of the busiest roads in Copenhagen, but closing the window cured that. Not overly impressed with the breakfast though, some parts of it were cold!!

Good location

from BernieIreland
Location of hotel was very good, central, but right on main road, which was very noisey with traffic at night. Room we booked was not at all like the one on website, requested non-smoking and double bed and got neither, but we complained and they moved us to a bigger room, but still a smoking room. Staff very obliging and friendly. Breakfast was very good. Is clean and friendly.

Sleepless in Copenhagen

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is located right in the center of Copenhagen which is great for walking and seeing the sights. Unfortunately it is also located on an extremely busy road. Our first night was a Saturday night and the traffic noise was horrendous. We did not get to sleep until after 2 am. The standard rooms were also very small, with two single beds instead of a double, and smelled of cigarette smoke. They room pictured in the brochure we were sent is the superior room and bears no relation to the standard room.
On the positive side the staff were extremely polite and helpful, with outstanding English. We upgraded to a suite for the second night for an extra £40, but the best investment we made was some earplugs from the local department store.

Dear Sir

Thank you for your response. We are very sad to hear about your bad impression during your stay with us. For your information we have now had the street renovated with sound reduced asphalt, we have extended the number of the non smoking rooms, we are in process of changing the photos on our website.

We give you our sincere apologies and hope to see you again .

Top Local Tips for Copenhagen

Local Transport If you arrive at the airport, you can reach the city easily with the train and it is rather cheap than taking a taxi. The train leaves from the airport and arrives into the city centre and takes about 20 minutes, much faster than the taxi. Getting around the city is not dificult and local transport is great.

Peder Oxe This charming Danish restaurant is a 10 minute walk from the hotel. It was recommended by the girl on reception the evening I arrived at the hotel. I enjoyed it so much I went back for lunch a couple of days later.
