Nice Hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberOverall A Good Hotel
from Michael/Stevenlast stop on our Scandinavian trip. The staff was very helpful and even
let us check in at 10:00 a.m., which really was wonderful. The breakfast
was excellent, though very busy later in the morning. They had trouble
keeping items filled on the buffet. The rooms are small but fine and the
location of the hotel is great: a few blocks from Central Station and Tivoli
and the Stoget pedestrian street. The only gripe I have is a very personal
one: I didn't like the bar at all. It was far too small, not separated from the
lobby in any way, and (though this is un-p.c. to say) there was no smoking
allowed there. Still, it was a small dislike in the overall scheme of the hotel.
It was a good value and a great location in Copenhagen and the Danish
people everywhere were very nice. We would stay there again.
t ask for more....
from A TripAdvisor MemberI was looking for something well-kept and modern. I wasn't disappointed with this place. The hotel itself is about 7-8 minutes walk from the main square on a main road and about 5 minutes to the Tivoli. I asked for a quiet room on booking and was given one on the top floor (5th). The room itself was fairly compact but very clean and nicely furnished. There was a mini bar, largish TV, double bed and the usual stuff such as ironing board / trouser press. The windowas are double glazed which was good news as it was a bit cold outside! The breakfast was extra at 95 DKR (£9.50) each but we didn't bother - we had a Rough Guide which directed us to the cafe inside the Tivoli shopping centre (called Cafe Conditoi Hans Christian Anderson), on your right hand side as you walk towards the main square, which was cheap and cheerful (about £4 each) and another just off the main square (there are plently to choose from).
Tips -
the draught beer is more expensive than the bottled stuff. One place we went to was charging £7 for draught. The supermarkets sell bottled Tuborg or Carlsberg (both available in a large number of varieties, not just 'beer' or 'lager') for about 70 pence each.
the Tivoli is deceptively large and is good for children. It was very Christmas in there when we went but without being tacky. I think nightime is probably the best time to go.
the Little Mermaid is a good walk from the centre and a bit disappointing being then it looks out to a wind farm and factory.
food is reasonably priced and drinks seem cheaper if ordered with food.
the 'Illum' department store on the main shopping street is good.
Observations -
the people - I was knocked-out by how very friendly and obliging they were. They speak English which is good for me because Danish isn't my strong suit.
lots of people cycle around - there are bicycles everywhere. As a result, the air seemed very clean. I've been told that cars are highly taxed.
I liked it so much, I will be back, probably in the summer for a bit of contrast. Highly recommended place to visit.
Great Stay at the First, but Try Turning left...
from LilBeethovenCopenhagen can be expensive for food and Alcohol, though cheaper than Sweden. Get away from the tourist routes if you want to save money. I was recommended the Moose bar for the best value in Copenhagen where on a Thursday and Saturday drinks are 2 for 1 till 6AM, though unfortunately we didnt get to try it.
One huge tip is try turning left instead of right as you come out of the hotel. Most people head off to Stroget or Nyhavn for shopping and dining but the First hotel is ideally placed for cheaper shops and more varied and considerably cheaper dining options. Do try the Ankara turkish Restaurant about 300 yards from the Hotel (pass the Ankara buffet , the restaurant is opposite the Savoy hotel).
The restaurant has a 3 course offering for 89DKK (around 8 pounds) which you choose from the main menu. The food is excellent and the place is very popular with locals. Dont worry that the menu outside is Danish, the friendly staff will provide you with an English menu and any help you need. The food is more European than Turkish so you can get steaks, chicken and pork in sauces or more traditional turkish food if you wish. Try to arrive so that you will be mid main course around 9pm as the belly dancers turn up... A good meal , wine and entertainment for under 40 pounds...you won't get a main course and glass of wine for that around the tourist areas.
Another Bargain must do is the Carlsberg factory. Its a little out of town and an 'interesting' walk but well worth it. The tour is free and easy to follow , though not easily accessible to wheelchair users. Not only do you find out the history of the brewery and its ales but you get to see (and smell) the beautiful dray horses. To top it all you receive 2 FREE beer vouchers each, to use in the brewery bar. I'd advise trying the Carls Dark or Hvede rather than the light lager. Try to get here early in the day as the tour coaches seem to arrive around 12:30.
Great Hotel in Copenhagen
from hovisGood Experience
from gawecaSeems to be a newer hotel, but is a bit worn around the edges. Rooms are good size. Housekeeping could be better. Ice machines are a nice surprise. Lots of tour groups in and out.
We really liked the First Vesterbro
from d956If you are considering this hotel, be certain to undertake some extensive internet research before booking. Prices between different sites vary widely. We were able to find a prepaid nightly rate (in U.S.$) of $167.00, including breakfast and all taxes, through an internet site based in either Sweden or Denmark. This price was considerably less than that available through the hotel's website or through the traditional travel sites generally accessed from the United States. Also, with the recent less than stellar performance of the U.S.$ vis a vis most European currencies, it was nice to have the hotel's rate guaranteed in U.S.$ and the bill paid for before our arrival.
All-in-all, a very high recommendation for this hotel. Outstanding comfort and value in an otherwise very expensive city.
Modern, clean and a very helpful staff
from CRichieGreat Location, Very Clean and Freindly
from jakub808As far as where this hotel is, you can't really beat this location. The name is Vesterbro but its actually on the edge of Vesterbro next to the City. Its about 2 blocks from the grand rail station, and about 4 blocks from Tivoli Gardens. and 6 blocks from the center square and all the shopping, sightseeing. Basically everything is in walking distance.
The only thing far away was the major dance clubs, but it was really a short cab ride. We walked to Vega one night, it was pretty far. Rust is really too far to walk..
Overpriced but acceptable
from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for Copenhagen
Get the train Don't bother wasting money getting a taxi from the airport, just hop on the train in the airport terminal and within minutes you will be in central Copenhagen. This was the most hassle free trip I have erver had... Also as a total asside, the Little Mermaid is totally overrated, and is in the middle of no-where, not sure it was worth the trek just for a photo....
Changing of the guard Make sure you catch the changing of the guard at the royal palace. It is something out a story book.
Marriott Our experience at the Marriott in Copenhagen has made use loyal guests of the Marriott. They were right on the canal so it was easy to get around to see all the historical sites. Review of other hotels in Copenhagen were misleading. I'm sticking to name I know. We first picked a hotel near the train station. That was a mistake. Buses and canal travel is far superior.
