I stay at this hotel every year in December when I visit Copenhagen for the Christmas markets. Location for shopping is excellent, the food in the bar is of very good, staff are always friendly and the rooms are very special. I will hopefully be returning again next year.

My husband and I stayed at 71 Nyhavn Hotel in Copenhagen a few nights during our trip to Denmark and Sweden for our one year wedding anniversary. The hotel is in a great location, you can get a room with canal views. The rooms are on the small side, the bed was a bit lumpy and the bathroom wasn't spic and span, but on the whole, I truly enjoyed my stay there. Also, if you are traveling to Oslo on an overnight boat, the boat dock is within walking distance. The hotel is a short walk from many restaurants and pubs, including the Stroget area. We even walked to see the palace and Little Mermaid from the hotel. Everyone we met on our stay was very friendly. The 71 Nyhavn was a great place to start our vacation in Denmark.

I'm amazed at some of the negative comments about this hotel. I stayed there just after Christmas 2005 through New Years 2006. I thought this hotel was terrific. Very well located, very clean and cozy. My room was on the third floor so I reached it from the upper elevator in the lobby. The room was a very nice size, the bathroom was quite large, all in marble and nicely appointed. The bed was cozy and comfortable with a down comforter and mattress pad. I was traveling with my brother and sister-in-law so I also saw their room and it was as nice as mine except the bathroom was a bit smaller. The breakfast buffet was just wonderful with a huge selection of items: yogurt, cheeses, breads, cereal, fruit, scrambled eggs, sausage, herring, salmon and other types of meats. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel was very easy walking distance to the square, the metro, the buses, and the walking street. Many, many restaurants and cafes all through out the area. I would go back there in a minute. I will have to say that I certainly did not tour the entire hotel, nor did I see every room. This hotel is in one of the old warehouses that has been remodeled so I would imagine that some rooms might be fairly small. The ceilings are low and there are a lot of beams which to me added to it's charm. From some of the reviews I read, I wonder if there are "two hotels" sharing the same building. There also was a computer set up in the lobby for guests use. There was a fee that I would imagine would not break the bank. There was a guest book in the lobby and the comments from guests were very complimentary. I thought it was a great place to stay and I think in the summer, although it is a busy area I am sure, it would just be that much more charming with the canal, the boats, the painted buildings.

Beautiful, cosy hotel in a great location

I booked this hotel as a surprise first trip for my husband and I to Copenhagen. After reading all the reviews (after already booking)i felt really dispondant and concerend at whether I should keep or cancel the booking. My main concern was that all the reports said that the rooms were so small - I opted to email the hotel in advance and ask for a room without a view, which then meant that the room would be bigger (on the otherside of the hotel one review described. It depends what is more important to you - a larger room and less of a view was to us because we spent most of the time exploring anyway.

My nerves were beginning to give way by the time we arrived, however I shouldn't have been so concerned. The hotel was beautiful - full of character (much more 'traditional' than a large hotel chain.) The room wasn't the biggest in the world, but it was nicely furnished, had a really comfortable bed and a large clean bathroom. The ceilings were quite low, which obviously made the rooms feel smaller, but on the whole, it was great.

A really big choice of breakfast buffet (hot and cold), including Danish delights. The bar however was quite pricey and could have done with a friendlier bartender, but that didn't put us off!

The location is fantastic. We went in winter and it was quite quiet on the streets around the area (although we still had to book in at restaurants) and I could image it being quite a different place in the summer with drinkers and diners adorning the pedestrianised street?!

we insisted on a room with a view on the water. this was really nice for a couple, to have breakfast by the window with a view. otherwise, furniture was of good quality, cleanliness not spotless and the bathroom can be really improved.

if we did not get the lovely view we asked for, i would have been disappointed by this hotel.

service is ok and the bar atmosphere laid back.

I have been a regular guest at 71 Nyhavn for many years, and am satisfied that I can keep this gem of a hotel to myself. Considering all the crap other guests have written on this page, I'm pretty happy that we keep it as it is; a cosy hotel with a lot of atmosphere and all the modern conveniences you need + a great gourmet restaurant with value for money. You cannot beat location either! The staff members all have a natural smile, a true concern for guest well being and yet manage to be professional at the same time!!! If you need an unpersonal service and a traditional, boring hotel experience - go elsewhere!!! I get depressed when 71 is fully booked...

Our experience at 71 Nyhavn was very similar to the other negative reviews here. The lobby is fine and actually makes it seem like this could be a nice, quaint hotel. The first inkling one gets of a problem is when the front desk person tells you that you have to haul your own luggage down a flight of stairs, through the bar, and into a miniscule elevator to get to your room. No one moves a muscle to help you. It gets worse from there. Our room was a "junior suite" with a king bed, "guaranteed." At best the bed was a queen and it may even have been a little smaller than that. The furniture looked like it came from a garage sale. The carpet was stained so badly that you wouldn't want to walk around in bare feet. The bathroom is tiny. I didn't check to see if it was clean because by that time I had already discovered chewing gum stuck on the arm of one of the chairs in the sitting area, and on a plant near the bed (which was also covered with a thick layer of grey dust) and I knew I couldn't stay there. The management of this hotel should be ashamed!

Terrible disappointment

Good location but everything else was a terrible disappointment. Breakfast was 3-star, hardly any choice, especially of Danish products.
The rooms are very very small, even the ceiling is low so you really feel claustrophobic, my minibar was warm and the view was... a brick wall.
The bathroom was the worse I've ever seen, even worse than a 2-star in Italy I stayed in once. Taking a simple shower was a battle and fighting off a big spider as well.
Arriving is also quite an experience: to get to the room from the entrance hall, I had to carry my heavy luggage down a flight of stairs alone, because the lift to my side of the hotel wasn't on the same level as the entrance.
To make it all worse, the service is poor. My company had already paid for the room in advance, but they denied having received any payment, even after I showed them a printed confirmation. Without any warning, they took the cost out of my personal credit card anyway!
I was furious and I definitely don't recommend the hotel to anyone!

The room sizes are ridiculously small I couldnt believe that we were in one of the biggest rooms so I am told, the bed size is very small cant see how they call this a double, If you want value for money do not stay at this hotel it really is poor value.

We stayed at the 71 Nyhavn after first trying the Sofie Amalie, which was awful! In comparison, 71 Nyhavn was great. The rooms were very small, even the deluxe rooms; and the cielings were low, giving it a bit of a claustrophobic atmosphere. But it was CLEAN, and so we decided that we'd call the smallness "cozy" and it was. Lovely restaurant, good breakfasts, good room service (and quick!) and a wonderful location. The help were pleasant and helpful. There are very few hotel parking places, so a clerk took the car and parked it for us--no problem! The early morning sun on the canal outside was absolutely beautiful. A well run, reliable hotel, with charm and atmosphere!

Not luxurious, but still great

We stayed at this hotel on our first trip to Denmark, this Easter 2005. I had read the mixed reviews and wondered what to expect... but I have to say I wasn't disappointed, and would probably stay there again if I returned to this lovely city!
We had a room with a view, and therefore, no space. The bed was small, there were two single duvets instead of a double, and actually the bed was the small side of double... It wasn't the kind of room that sparkles, but it wasn't dirty, the bathroom tiles were clean, and the unusual shower was surpisingly effective, with plenty of hot water!
The breakfast was good but not fantastic; if you've stayed at other luxury hotels this would probably not excite you, but it's good fresh fare.
The mini bar wasn't really cold, and wasn't that clean, but with Nyhavn right outside and a great bar in the hotel, why drink in your room?!
The location is this hotel's key feature; it makes the less desirable features matter little. The fantastic restaurants and bars with their charming flowers and heaters, the snug blankets and the happy atmosphere is really uplifting! It was quite cold when we visited, clear bright blue skies with a sharp wind, but Nyhavn wa a great place to sit and watch the world go by...
The fact that the main sights are all within walking distance made this hotel a real winner for us, and we would recommend it if someone asked us where to stay.

Top Local Tips for Copenhagen

Buy a clipcard Discount cards (klippekort) will get you anywhere in central Copenhagen for about $2. They can be used on the metro, trains and buses.

Taxis break the bank Taxi service in Copenhagen is EXCEEDINGLY expensive. There is an excellent bus system and sidewalks everywhere you want to go. Unless you really are desperate to get somewhere very quickly, include your feet and public transit in your plans.

Metro from the airport The metro trip from the airport saves a bundle over taxi fairs for getting into the city. But it can be confusing at the airport. The Metro line from the airport is called M2. But the airport also has two direct rail links that go elsewhere - they are signposted Track 1 and Track 2. The key thing to remember is that from the Arrivals area you have to go UPSTAIRS to get the Metro. If you're buying Metro ticket from a machine, the trip into the city is for 3 Zones. Kids aged under 10 don't need a Metro ticket - they go free.
