Avoid during renovations!!
from JTravellerDublinhome from home
from PrudhoegirlThis time we booked via the hotel's own website - NB if you do this you get a 20% discount.
We also booked the hotel taxi - Jana at the Hastal was extremely helpful, even when our flight was changed. The driver was there to meet us at the airport, and was charming. Thanks to the one-way system we had the bonus of a tour round the Old Town on the way to the hotel.
(If you are on a budget, the Cedaz mini-bus from the airport to Republic Square is very convenient).
We were in room 22, which is worth requesting (we had it purely by chance). It is immediately above the front door, with a pretty wrought iron balcony, overlooking the church and square.
Yes, the rooms are fairly simple, but quiet, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Our shower room was very well appointed - I got so hooked on the illuminated magnifying make-up mirror that I bought myself one as soon as I got home.
The location is ideal, the Jewish Quarter, Old Town Square and Charles Bridge are all within easy walking distance. The street is amazingly quiet given that it is close to the centre of a capital city.
The staff are warm, friendly, welcoming and very helpful. The whole atmosphere makes you feel like part of the family.
Two doors away, Chez Marcel is a delightful little French bistro, where we ate several times last year. We were recognized as old customers and received drinks on the house. Our other favourite eatery is the Swejk Restaurant on ul. Siroka - substantial Czech fare at very reasonable prices.
You can pay for your room by cash in Czech currency or euros, or by card in Czech currency only - in response to a previous comment, we found the exchange rate perfectly correct, but remember that you never get the same rate when changing out of a currency as when changing in! But if in doubt, just take euros with you, for the price as quoted when booking.
We told them we'll be back again, and we mean it!
Non-smokers beware!
from JaneMarcIt did get quite noisy in early mornings - ear plugs reccommended.
We were disappointed to find that the room smelled stongly of smoke (the carpet, bedding, curtains etc). As non-smokers who had requested a non-smoking room, this was very unpalatable. There were no other rooms available so we asked for some air fresher to be sent to the rom. None was forthcoming so we had to go and buy some to freshen the room regularly. We think the smell was coming from the air-vents in the bathroom too.
The room itself was clean, and cleaned regularly, but was soul-less and lacking in any charm whatsoever and was extremely dated in decor.
The staff on reception at the hotel lacked local knowledge and were not particularly helpful or friendly.
Overall, it was fine for a three night break, but I would not reccommend it if you want luxury and frills. (ie a honeymoon)
Good but basic
from Jeroen_KPeaceful Haven
from A TripAdvisor MemberDespite requests for help from the management, we were unable
to have a hot shower for the 4 days we were there.
It was always cold/luke warm and sometimes
no water came out at all or it would stop and start. Otherwise this
Hotel is a dream. Comfortable rooms, excellent beds, very friendly
staff and the location was central to everything. Breakfast is good
but was not impressed with the Restaurant food for dinner.
If you want to be walking distance to it all - this is the place!!!
from A TripAdvisor MemberWe arrived at night and were checked in promptly. Room very clean with all essential ammenities (TV, hairdryer, comfortable bed, clean sheets, and big bathroom with very powerful shower!)
Breakfast was good, and you can have as much as you like of bread, cheese, ham, salami, cereals and fresh juice etc).
Our 1st venture out we managed to cover most of prague old and new town on foot, enjoying all the sights and tourist spots (although very busy with tourists this time of year). We enjoyed a walk to the castle, over charles bridge, around the shops etc.
Eating and drinking out varies a lot here - If you eat in the hot spots like to square expect to pay english prices and service charge and pay to use toilet!!! If you go to the restaurants and bars on the outskirts you not only get cheaper prices but a more traditional experience.
The hotel has a lovely courtyard at the back, if it is sunny this place is always shaded, and drinks are very reasonable for hotels. We didn't eat here as with only 3 nights we wanted to explore, but the restaurant next door but one called chez marcel is very nice and very reasonably priced.
Most of the staff at hotel were friendly and helpful, and our room was kept clean, althought they only change you towel every 3 days which meant we had the same one for whole stay (although am sure if we had asked they would have changed it for us).
Would definately reccomend this as a competatively priced hotel for the location it is in and would return again if we visit prague in the future. Hope this review is helpful to those looking.
Hastel has a lot to offer
from A TripAdvisor MemberI found the rooms to be extremely clean and comfortable. In addition, the staff were courteous and helpful. They arranged for transport to/from the airport.
I would stay at Hotel Hastel again.
Exchange rate
from A TripAdvisor MemberGot a nasty suprise on morning of departure when we were charged 1114 czks more than expected. Our booking price was quoted in euros but the hotels conversion rate was much differant than expected.Rate even different from hotels web site.
Best to get booking quotation in Czec Crowns and euros
Definitely coming here again
from A TripAdvisor Membernon of that city street noise eventhough we were on a square, behind some local cocktail bars!
I will definitely be staying at this hotel again.
very friendly staff, willing to help you when you need some information. The night porter was a bigger help to us than the daytime bloke.
In high season, maybe a bit overpriced, but still worth it.
Good hotel in Stare Mesto
from DodyvTop Local Tips for Prague
too many cheap trinket shops After you see enough of the old town with its beautiful buildings and, unfortunately, its scores of junky shops, walk through the quiet streets of the city across the Charles Bridge, and later, head for a wonderful concert - not the ones they hand out flyers advertising them in the old town - they are mostly a rip off. Instead find out where the Prague or Czech symphony orchestras are performing and prepare for a treat. Also, check out "Praguewalks" or "City Walks of Prague" whose leaders stand with a brown or blue umbrella (depending on company) in the by the Clock in the Old Town Square. They are a very good way to get acclimated. Finally, if you like super fresh vegetarian fare, you can't beat the taste and value of the Old Country Restaurant.
concerts in churches lots of concerts in churches
Beware Always agree a price if using taxis.I was glad that we had booked a taxi through Prague Experience before the holiday. The driver was waiting for us and we hadn't the hassle of haggling at the airport.and he was right on time at our hotel on departure.Would certainly do that again.
