Historical Traveller Reviews of Venus Beach Hotel

very enjoyable holiday

from traveller0065
We were very sceptical about this hotel having read some previous negative reviews. We have just returned and really enjoyed ourslves. Hotel was consistently clean in all areas, staff were all helpful. Rooms were very spacious, the pool area was really pleasant and it led down to the small beach through a very nice grassy area. Plenty of sunbeds and free beach towels. Plenty of choice for breakfast-hot and cold. We were on B+B but ate in the hotel on one night and food was lovely. Entertainment every night was very enjoyable. There were several Tavernas across the road to eat at, or just have a drink.
It is only a short taxi ride from Paphos and its right next to the Tomb of the Kings. It should not be rated as 5 star, but 4 star is about right. If we go back to Paphos we would definately stay at this hotel again. A thoroughly enjoyable holiday.

Great 4 star hotel

from MummyMemma
It was with some nervousness that we travelled to the Venus Beach having read some shocking reviews but, I am delighted to say they were proved wrong.
The hotal is located about 1km outside of the centre of Paphos and has some lovely restaurants and tavernas just across the road so there's still plenty of places to eat out.
We went B&B which I would recommend as we got to experience more that just Venus Beach food although the Flamb night was very tasty indeed.
The pool area was spotless and clearly well looked after. There were plenty of sun loungers although we were out of season so I can't comment on peak times.
There was also a pool bar which served drinks and ligt lunches of a good quality.
The staff in particular on reception, were very helpful and ordered taxis etc. for us as soon as we needed them.
The hotel is not a 5 star but a reasonable 4 star. I think that's a fairly common thing in the Greek islands. If this was advertised as 4 star people would be a lot happier.
The room was clean and the beds were made everyday by mid morning. I know they were cleaned as well as I could smell the polish when we went in after the cleaners had been.
The bathrooms were the thing that let the hotel down if I had to pick something. They were basic but clean and if there was an area for improvement this would be it. However, my view was that I was on my holiday and didn't want to spend a week sat in my bedroom/bathroom so it wasn't a big problem for me.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a quiet break and lovely views with good food and friendly staff.

Nice hotel not five star

from RickyTracey
We have just returned from this hotel. Was dreading it due to the reviews on this page. We had a lovely holiday. This is not a five star hotel and if we had paid five star prices we would not have been so pleased. We found the staff excellent the hotel very clean the pool lovely. The food ranged from good to excellent and we had no trouble finding something nice to eat. We chose to eat out one night and had a lovely meal in Chloe's chinese over the road. There are such lovely place to eat I think I would chose B&B and take dinner in the hotel on the nights we liked the look of the menu if we were to return. Drinks are expensive in the hotel and we chose to partake of happy hour at cheers bar over the road and finish off our evening in the hotel where the bar service was excellent and we met lots of nice people who were enjoying their holiday.

not worthy of five stars

from ericBristol_England
Stayed last year at a 5 star in Limmassol, so chose the Venus Beach in Paphos. Very disappointed with the bath towels - threadbare and frayed, bathmats were stained as was the bedroom carpet. Room cleaning was poor. Breakfast was poor with reconstituted bacon and horrible scrambled eggs. Meat at the buffet dinner was variable, and was often too tough to cut/eat. This hotel was obviously a 5 star at some time, but currently falls well short.

I returned from the hotel last night. the hotel is definately not a 5*. It is a poor 4*. The hotel is on its own in a dull area. The beach was small. No white sand like you would expect. The rooms were ok, but nothing special. If I went back to Paphos I would stay elsewhere.

Horrible hotel

This is NOT a 5 star hotel. 3 star the most. We were given a room which faced the very noisy road, we could not sleep at night, nor could we open a window during the day. To change to a sea view room costed 70 pounds/night on top, they said to us. The food was really bad. Coffee delivered to the room was cold and not tasty. In the hotel they charge you twice the prices for water, cookies, etc than in the stores in town. The hotel does not provide bath robes and slippers. Rooms are quite poorly furnished and cleaned. Do not go there.
This was the most terrible experience we ever had.

No way 5 stars

As other reviewers state breakfast is not good, not good quality or hot! scramled egg is more like egg custard and bacon and sausage awful.

3 Stars masquerading as 5...

from Ladyteacups
We have just returned from a week at the Venus Beach Hotel, Paphos. I agree that this hotel is definitely not 5*. The room, meals and staff left much to be desired.

The finish in our room (355) was actually amateurish, particularly the bathroom, which had a painted chipboard ceiling, sagging light fixture, and no extractor fan. The flat-pack drawers were battered and their paint peeling. Our room was advertised as having a ‘Mountain View’ – this means that it faced the (very busy) Tomb of the Kings Road, which, after the first night, we dubbed ‘the M1’. The ‘Bacchus Bar’ was below us, and the noise level of the nightly entertainment, combined with that of the traffic outside, left us bleary eyed and exhausted in the morning. Other couples had paid less for their rooms but had robes, kettles and turn-down service – the basics one would expect for 5* - not so us!

Meals were so generic as to remind one of school lunches. Breakfasts are exactly as described in previous posts; there was never one change in the offering and the pre-cooked eggs and chipolata-like sausages were uninviting. The evening buffet meals were (loosely) themed – Cyprus night, Grill night, Italian night, Oriental night, ad nausea. Our package was half-board, and I would never consider this option again. The Flambé night was a huge disappointment; we paid an additional cy£9 each for the delight of well-done steaks (the surly waiter said that is would be impossible to cook the steaks to order, so all would be prepared (over-cooked) to the same degree of doneness), absolutely non-descript accompaniments and predictable gateaux. The pieste de la resistance was a shot of paint stripper that had somehow been labelled as brandy. The coffee throughout the hotel tasted like dish water, and as previously reviewed, the drinks were so costly (cy£3.50 or bps£5.00 for a Margarita) that everyone with any sense went across the road to Joanna’s where the drinks were half the price and the publican was friendly. Which leads me to the Hotel staff…

I can’t say that ALL the staff were unfriendly and/or arrogant but the desk staff in particular seemed to feel that they were far above it all. A few of the dining room and bar staff needed a course on customer service, but there were also those that were friendly and always ready with a greeting.

After all of this, you may think that we had a horrible time, but that is not the case! The Hotel, whilst not 5*, was clean. The food, whilst mediocre, was edible. We enjoyed the company of several fellow holiday makers in our hotel. The high point was the Jeep ‘Safari’ excursions from Theo’s tours to the mountains and wildlife reserve, guided by Chris – now those were definitely 5*!

Would we go back to Cyprus? Yes. Would be stay at Venus Beach Hotel again? No, because there are other Hotels in the area that offer a better standard for the same price.

Get away with tiny tots

Venus Beach Hotel Paphos 8 – 15 January, 2006-01-21
Having read a couple of cautionary reviews of this hotel prior to departure, in order to avoid disappointment, I was not overly enthusiastic about my forthcoming trip to Pathos. We deliberately travelled outside of school holidays in order to avail of the more competitive rates. True, the hotel does not qualify for 5 star grading and 4 star would be more appropriate. Yes, I am contemplating returning to this hotel again next year for a similar break. I travelled with my husband, 2.5 year old and 6 month old and we got what we had hoped for:- a relaxing, quality break with good food, on a half board basis at a reasonable price. Very family friendly hotel and staff did all they could to accommodate our needs, which are several when travelling with two little ones. There is an option for swopping evening meal for lunch when on half board and this can vary from one day to the next. We also availed of this swop in the form of packed lunches when we went out for a trip one day and found we were given more than enough for two days! Prices for drinks of all sorts in the hotel are very steep and we got round this by buying elsewhere when we could. We enjoyed the varied evening entertainment after our meal, which included a fire eater followed by walking on glass. Bingo, quizzes and traditional dancing were also included in the package. There was a small toddler play area within the gym and though my husband and I never went to the gym to workout per se, we did make use of this play area for amusing our toddler. The bus stop is 100 yards from the hotel and this also is a pick up point for several coach tours. Again, very convenient when travelling with small children. We found the rooms spacious and as we had just booked a standard twin room, there was still enough space to accommodate 2 cots.
Lovely people, good value for money, and all restaurants and cafes in Paphos seem to be designed with little ones in mind.

Not a 5 star hotel

from pathos
We have just returned from a trip to Pathos staying at the Venus Beach Hotel and can only say similar to other comments regarding this Hotel. Definitely not a 5 star more like a 3 star. The breakfasts were really poor the eggs not made to order and were generally left to set hard, fresh ones were cooked when the others had been taken. The staff were a very miserable bunch, no good morning or a smile definitely not a happy staff.
The standard generally was very poor.
The evening meals were a little better. The entertainment was quite good. The drinks were very expensive and most people went over the road as they were half price.
We would not return to this hotel again.
