Historical Traveller Reviews of Avanti Hotel
A lovely hotel but experienced a few low points
from A TripAdvisor MemberLOCATION
The hotel is in a great location in Paphos, near to plenty of bars, restuarants, supermarkets and within 10 mintues walking distance to the harbour. The best restaurant is at the back of the hotel just over the road called Ficardos. The service is 1st class, friendly staff and the food is the best we had, also reasonably priced in comparison to other places.
The sea is just over the road, however there was not much in the way of a beach, it is rocky and no sand. Although there were sunbeds it is not appealing enough to want to spend the day there.
ROOMS
The rooms are small however well furnished with a fridge/mini bar, TV (limited channels, only Eurosport is in English), hairdryer but no tea making facilities or radio.
The bathroom is also small but functional with a built in shower over the bath and also a separate shower attachment. The rooms are cleaned every day and clean towels provided each time.
POOL & GARDENS
The highlight of the hotel is the pool area which is set amongst a lovely garden area with palm trees and pretty coloured flowers and plants. There are plenty of sunbeds which are spread out vastly. The pool is large with a good sized shallow end leading into the deep end which is approx 6ft deep. A small baby pool is located near the shallow end and a fairling decent climbing frame for kids.
There is a pool bar which can be accessed from the pool or on dry land. Although convenient and provides drinks and snacks, it is expensive. A bottle of water is three times the cost of one bought from a supermarket nearby.
ENTERTAINMENT
During the day guests can enjoy Aqua Aerobics, Water Polo, Archery, Bowls and Volley Ball. You are not hassled if you want to be left alone to soak up the sun
I enjoyed getting involved in these activities as they were fun and it gives you something to do and a good opportunity to get to know other guests.
However, what I saw of the evening entertainment was dismal, but may excite others. It consisted of bingo, karoko, some old guy on a electric keyboard singing out of tune, and a quiz.
FACILITIES
The hotel has a games area in the basement area which includes table tennis, air hockey, pool table, indoor swimming pool and a gym.
We used the gym just to keep up our fitness as we both exercise regularly at home. The gym was no David Lloyd or Holmes Place but certainly equiped enough for those wishing to pump some iron. There is a treadmill, 2 bikes, variety of weight machines and free weights.
BREAKFAST
The breakfast is in a canteen style dining room, although luckily you could choose to sit outside on a large under cover patio area which was much nicer.
There is a good selection of food from cooked breakfast to cereals and fruit. It was the same every day and got a bit boring by the end of the holiday.
THE FEW THINGS WHICH SPOILT IT
**ISSUE ONE** - a small annoyance really
The room smelt of smoke, being a non-smoker I found this disgusting. It would be nice to have no smoking rooms to offer guests. You could also smell the smoke from people smoking in the room next door.
**ISSUE TWO** - a bit of inconvenience
There was lots of maintenance work going on which meant you could not use some of the facilities, ie the gym, games area.
**ISSUE THREE** - upset and angry
We returned to our room one afternoon to get changed to go out and found our door wide open with a man up a ladder looking at the air conditioning.
When we asked how long they was going to be we was rudely told just 10 mintues. We sat and waited and half an hour later no sign of him finishing up. I asked him if he could leave for a few mintues so we could at least get changed and go out, he then hurridly packed up his stuff and went.
Later that day we returned to our room to find lots of water dripping from the ceiling all over our clothes which was directly under the leak. The clothes were wet through.
We went to reception to get it sorted out and was told someone will come and look at it. After waiting over an hour later no-one had come and the water was still dripping loads from the celing all over the cupboards, fridge and carpet.
We went back to reception to find out what is going on and was again rudely spoken to and told it had been reported and someone will look at it as and when.
Eventually the matter got resolved, however we never received any apology for the inconvenience and was not offered to have our clothes cleaned or at least dryed.
**ISSUE FOUR** - the final straw
When we checked out of our room on the final day, we was given a bill for a telephone call, which we never made. When we queried it with the reception staff, we was told that we must have made the call as it was on the bill to our room number and demanded we paid for it. We said we had not touched the phone as we both have mobile phones, the telephone number was not even one we recognised. After much argument, we never paid the bill but was certainly made to feel bad about it.
When we later looked the date of the phone call it was made on the day the maintenance man had let himself into our room!
OVERALL
We had a lovely holiday and apart from the few issues above, we enjoyed ourselves.
The hotel itself was good, it is just a shame about the reception staff being so rude and unfriendly. A real big let down for the hotel.
I would not overly recommend this hotel for the reasons above, however it does have lots to offer and if we hadn't experienced the problems we did, I wouldn't have had to encounter the rudeness of the reception staff.
It Was fine
from BarryNorthernIrelandNot a 4 star
from WANEYLocation is ideal, close to many bars, cafes and good quality restaurants. The pool side view rooms are well furnished, clean and spacious, they are directly above the nightly entertainment section which plays loudly until midnight, so if you are an early to bed type take some ear plugs..
The grassed areas around the pool are spacious and there are many sun loungers, there needs to be as they are used by many non residents who have direct access to the pool from off the main street.
The bad points are not major issues they could be solved if only the mangament had the will. There is no porter to help with your luggage, no welcome pack / hotel info brochure available The breakfast has to be the worst I've encountered for many years, served in a cheerless canteen type room. The food is monotonous and poorly cooked and presented, there is no chef on view so if you like your eggs, poached, over easy, omelette or even some hash browns, stay elsewhere.
The reception staff with one exception are unhelpful and prefer to say no. Eg. when we asked if a courtesy room was available on our last day we were told flatly, no. it was only when we persisted that she went into the back office and produced a list headed Courtesy rooms, sadly there were many other examlpes of this take it or leave it attitude. The hotel seems to concentrate on weddings there were 7 during our stay so it can get rowdy in the evenings particularly as children are allowed in the cocktail bar.
The Athena beach / Athena Royal or the Rui hotels would be much better alternative venues
Very good hotel overall
from Pippa22catThe hotel is in a great loction, and the bus stop to the harbour is a short walk away.
Rooms are very clean and in good condition.
Evening entertainment is good and the bar area is nice.
Pool is great, the only criticism is that the deep end is not clearly marked and quite a few people stepped off the steps only to go straight under!
Not much entertainment for kids, but may be better in peak season.
The breakfast was not that great. No melon or omlettes and limited fruit option. I would have expected more for a 4 * hotel.
If you are eating out near to the hotel I would recommend the Crocodile Pub (just down the road). NIce food and reasonably priced.
The brahms and list pub also serves nice food and every night there is a different artist on. Good if you like to eat, relax and listen to music.
Overall I would recommend the hotel, paphos and the location.
Interesting holiday and wonderful Cypriots
from j111djaKato Paphos is the location of the Avanti Hotel and I must say that it was the prettier side of the resort when compared to the "Blackpool in the Sun" side of the resort near the Tomb of the Kings. Kato Paphos has a lovely sea breeze most days in May but Nicosia was like a furnace. I hate to imagine the temperatures in July and August!!
Our favourite local evening restaurants in Kato Paphos were local to the hotel. Head outside the Avanti main entrance, across the road and turn left. There you will find the Rimini and Sunbow restaurants while the Rib Shack Restaurant at the back entrance is well recommended too. The Hot Cup was also great for huge snacks and damn good pub meals, plus they have multiple TV's for all you sport fans. All were getting busier as the holiday progressed. My favourite restaurant for local food was Michael's Restaurant which is located while walking past the old, disused wine factory on the way to the harbour. You will see a sign for Billy's Bar on the right hand side of the road just past the Aloe Hotel. Head up there and Michael's Restaurant is the last one on the left. I had the Lamb Kleftiko and it was to die for.
Coral Bay is a must to visit for a day of your holiday.
I must say that the Cypriot people are the most friendliest people on this small planet of ours, bar none. Everyone says hello, even workmen and delivery drivers. They are so curteous even when you are trying to cross the road. I have never experienced any people more friendly in all my 28 years travelling. All in all a great holiday. Go and enjoy!
Excellent holiday at the Avanti!
from mrsgeordioThis was a great time of year to go, as the weather was hot, but not unbearable, and the hotel did not seem too full - you could get a sunbed at whatever time of day in the pool area and the dining room was never full, so no queueing for food!
Breakfast was fine, plenty of choice, evening meals were great - there was a different theme every night eg Cyprus night, Italian night, International night and the dishes were quite imaginative and varied - not a sign of chips at all!
Rooms were cleaned daily and towels seemed to be changed daily too, which was excellent. There is a minibar in the room and a safe, which you have to pay 7 Cypriot pounds for.
The evening entertainment was not great though, so for something more exciting you would need to either take a taxi or walk to Paphos which took about 20 minutes. There is also a bus service to Paphos with a stop just to the right of the hotel - it costs 0.80 Cypriot pounds for however many stops you need. There are bars and restaurants within one minutes walk from the Avanti though, eg Irish pubs, Italian and French restaurants, so plenty of choice without having to go far.
If I was in this area again I would still choose this hotel and I would thoroughly recommend the Paphos area too - a beautiful harbour and very interesting sights in the vicinity, including tombs of the kings.
Good if your a cat person.
from A TripAdvisor Memberthis was my second stay in 4 years,it maintains its
standards over this period ,my only complaint is that the two dozen or so cats seem to take over the outside dining area,at breakfast time and if you leave your table to replenish your food or drink you will find cats wandering over your table on your return.the staff are excellent but i am afraid they are fighting a losing battle.

from Mrs JeanesYou could walk to Paphos Harbour but to be quite honest it was so hot we hired a car and took the easy option.
Entertainment was quite good especially if you have young children.
We would definately go back to this hotel
Nice hotel, shame about the ants
from OldMalI nearly had kittens one morning when something furry brushed my legs under the table. it turned out to be a cat, of which there are several. Cyprus seems to have hundreds of cats who just please themselves where they go. The cats were OK. The annoying animal life was the millions of tiny ants running aimlessly round and round although they didn't bite and they never came to our room.
The Avanti facilities were very good and the waiters were polite. Entertainment was OK.
Paphos has some very nice restaurants and bars within easy waliking distance. Cyprus is well worth a visit, although by the end of the week I was starting to think it was too hot and too expensive.
4 star prices 3 star quality
from rhinomaniaTop Local Tips for Paphos
Eating Out There were a number of good restaurants less than 100 metres from the hotel. We found that the best one as far as we were concerned was the Nature Bar and restaurant. We had been looking for somewhere special to celebrate our 36th wedding anniversary. We went to this restaurant the day before our anniversary and enjoyed it so much that we booked our table for the following evening. From the minute we arrived we felt like royalty, the staff were attentive but discreet. The atmosphere was romantic even though the restaurant got busier as the evening progressed. This was due in part to the way the restaurant was laid out,the tables set up so that you felt as though you had some privacy from the other diners.A place you must go to.
Great resort for families/couples with a good mix of relaxation & things to do Paphos is a lovely resort for families and couples. May not be ideal for beach lovers as the nearest good beach is Coral Bay about half an hour on the bus - beach lovers would be better in Protaras on the east side of the island. There are a lot of things to see in Paphos, it is very historical, the only thing that may slow you down is the heat in summer! Top of the list are the mosaics at the world heritage site, the tombs of the kings, Paphos aquarium to name but a few. A trip up the Troodos mountains is also well recommended - although hiring a car is probably a better idea than a jeep safari as sold by the travel companies - we saw the jeeps and they looked very packed in and very hot - no air conditioning and on the windy roads not for the faint hearted! The Kykkos monestry is the usual destination for trips up the mountains and with something like £30 million in gold interesting to see although quite modern.
Nothing fancy If you want a beach holiday, don;t go to Paphos. All the water fronts are rocky
