Historical Traveller Reviews of Oscar Resort Hotel
Having read lots of very mixed reviews of Oscars I went there with little expectation. It was not that bad but just pretty average. The hotel had a fairly dated feel to it and is in need of some modernisation. My room had a kind of 70's look about it (shabby pink carpet and bland laminate surfaces) but a number of my companions on the same trip had rooms that had obviously undergone a refurb and were in a better condition. The dining room is OK and the food is not too bad with the meze selction being the best on offer. The hot dishes were sometimes pretty weird and were probably not typically turkish but trying to be bland european! There is absolutely nowhere to walk to from the hotel, not even a beach to walk along and the walk on the road to the town is in no way picturesque and very dusty. This means you have to get a cab absolutely everywhere (the freebie train only runs a couple of times a day) and the bar in the hotel is so lacking in atmosphere that none of our group wanted to hang around there after dinner so there is no choice but to go into town. There aren't even any little local bars within walking distance. This is a real downside to staying at Oscars. On the plus side the 3 pools and gardens are pretty nice but there seems to be very little chlorine in the pools and a number of our party went down with sore throats and sore tummies thoughout the week.. I certainly wouldn't go back to Oscars again and it appears that the nearby Acapulco Hotel would be a much better choice.

On arrival you will be disappoined, we did not unpack: however after the initial shock, of the surrounding buildings it was not that bad. The location is to say the least undesirable, but the hotel is very clean, the staff are friendly & helpful, if you have a problem and report it to the Customer liason officer - who is available and every morning it is sorted out without delay and he checks with you to see if you are satisfied, what more can you ask for. One thing I would bring to your attention though , although everyone was trust worthy & honest we did find our doors left unlocked virtually every day after the maids had attended our room, and although we mentioned it to the maids and the liason officer it still kept happening, take care.
Beware the exchange rate
As others have noted, the hotel itself is clean and well-maintained. The pool areas are attractive and well-designed. The approach to the hotel is much less attractive, through streets which lack pavements and are characterised by half-built blocks of flats, some of which look as though they have been in that state for a very long time. And one evening we had to retreat from the balcony as a neighbour unsuccessfully tried to unblock the sewer serving the adjacent block of flats. The dinner buffet was adequate and certainly good value in relation to what we found elsewhere in Kyrenia. The breakfast buffet was fine.
Our main complaint was in relation to the internal credit card which is used to pay for drinks and so on. On arrival, we were told that if we put money onto the card, we would get back anything we hadn't spent. Not true, at least if you pay in pounds. Your sterling is converted into Turkish Lire at 2 lire to the pound and held on the card in lire. When you check out, your unspent lire are converted back into pounds at (in our case) 2.38 lire to the pound. By this simple means we lost roughly five pounds. Elsewhere in Kyrenia, restaurants and cafés were happy to take pounds at 2.35 lire or better. Though the sum involved was inconsequential, this felt like a rip-off. The lesson, of course, is to bring lire, or convert your pounds in Kyrenia town, and take the refund in lire, but I expect we're not the first to have fallen into this trap.
Oscar Mini Villas why stay anywhere else
Just got back from spending 10 days at Oscar Resort, staying in one of the little Villas, built around the edge of the big pool area, had a really great holiday no complaints at all, had breakfast in the main dining room in the hotel, best hotel breakfast in Kyrenia, staff are first class with their attitude and politeness towards their guests, no gestapo at this hotel confiscating bottles of water or alcohol as reported at other hotels, the children really enjoyed their stay again, and enjoyed the small swimming pools they could play in safely. There are some good restaurants nearby, Peanuts for example is well worth a visit or two, or splash out and go to Patina, free transport from the hotel and back, Patina has to be a must to go and dine in, it is quite superb, although not suitable for children. We ate out all the time through choice due to an excellent selection of restaurants within a reasonable distance. I think they need to watch their bar prices though, but that aside a really good time was had, the approach to the hotel has not improved!!, but as I didnt spend too much time in the car park area it didnt really matter, it is what is inside that really matters and that is a good hotel with high standards, well worth considering.

We had read lots of reviews of oscars and went with some aprehension, when we arrived our villa was not available so we stayed for 2 nights in the hotel and given 2 free breakfasts and 2 meals for our inconvieniebce the staff were very accomodating and helpful, the rest of our stay was fantastic we hired a car and the kids loved the country, the resort was very clean and the pools were exceptional, as reported the area outside the complex was like beirut but for us this added to our visit as it opened the kids eyes to life in another country. the weather was gorgeous and all our trips were a great success. we are going back to oscars this year
You should hire a car if you stay here as the hotel is located in an unfinished surrounding area and is some distance from Girne centre.
Be sure to stay at the front of the hotel overlooking the sea as if you don’t you will be kept awake all night by car doors banging from people attending the attached Casino.
The staff are friendly but suggest you stay b&b as the dinner menu is somewhat limited.
Views from the front of the hotel include the new harbour, sea, swimming pools and attractive gardens.
Enjoyed our stay

We have just returned from Oscars and have to say it was not as bad as I expected after reading other reviews. Yes it is a bit "tired" and could do with a good facelift but it was not dirty, the bedding etc all changed daily. We stayed in a Fantasia room which had good views of the sea and the mountains (we had the very end room which has a side window as well as a balcony). The staff were very cheery even though we were at the end of the season. There were no sewage problems so perhaps they sorted that out. For a middle of the road hotel you could do a lot worse. One strange service they provide is a hotel card to pay for drinks etc.. The reason I say strange is that you have to load the card with money before you can use it. This can be infuriating when you have ordered something only to be told "you need more money".
One thing you will find in most hotels are stray cats. Not everybodies friends I do realise but not always the friends of the owners. There is an Animal Rescue Service in Kyrenia run by Brits who care. Please visit their website at ---- if YOU care.
A great holiday!

I was part of a party of 3 adults and 3 children who stayed at Oscars at the end of October. Oscars is situated in a really run-down part of Kyrenia, quite a way from any shops or bars/restaurants, but this was one of the only disappointments about our holiday.
We arrived in the early hours of the morning to a very nice welcome. The receptionist explained about the Oscars card which you pay money onto and then pay for everything with. This was a good idea and you knew on the receipt how much you'd spent and how much credit you had left and you could leave your cash/cheques in the safe. We were shown to our clean and quite new looking third floor hotel room - we did have a view of the mountains but also the run-down and unfinished flats. As stated in a previous review the exchange rate is poor at the hotel so it's best to wait to go into Kyrenia to change your money.
The food was very good at the hotel restaurant, we were half board and we couldn't ever fault any of the meals. There was always a good choice and the salads were very well presented and very tasty. Breakfast was always good with lots of fresh bread and Yousouf the pancake man was a great hit pretending to drop everyone's plates. His pancakes and omelettes were very good. The hotel staff were always very friendly and very well dressed. Nothing was every too much trouble. They made a real fuss of our children and the kids loved the attention.
The pools were very clean and tidy and the only down side was the smell of drains/sewage which was worst around the bottom pool/snack bar. We didn't venture down there too often and stayed by the great wave pool which was smell free and which the kids loved.
We went on the Oscars train and ventured into Kyrenia to do some shopping. We visited the castle which is worth a visit and there were some good gift shops.
Most afternoons we visited the indoor pool and fitness centre which was good. The pool was unheated but was warmer than the pools outside. The kids loved the hot tub and the steam room and sauna were good too. The fitness equipment was a bit old but overall a bonus to have somewhere else to go when the sun goes down.
Overall we had a great holiday and we would go there again, just a pity about the surroundings.

I have just returned from northern cyprus after a 2 weeks stay at oscars club in the pink court apartments, the complex was run down, dirty and smelt. The beach was dirty and the pool area around the pool with the snack bar smelt. This has put me off ever going back to the island on holiday.
Pink Court (delux) studios, very poor
If you have not booked, dont go, these studio,s are in urgent need of refurbishing. The furniture in our self catering apartment was stained and smelt of vomit and urine, the taps in the toilet area needed new washers and the area flooded serveral times, the shower area was so tiny and as a man of medium size I could just turn around ,it also needed a good clean. Self catering consisted of two hot plates on a shabby unit , a kettle, they eventually gave us a plug for the sink after three days.Cleaners did come in every day but did a very poor job, flip flops were needed to keep your feet clean. The first apartment they showed us was worse than this one, on the positive side the second apartment had a sea view. There was a mini market in the hotel but it did not sell bread or milk, the other market outside of oscars did not open until after ten oclock the only super market to get supplies was a mile away along a very bad road. You cant buy anything in the hotel without loading your room card with money if you use sterling they only give you 2 lira to the pound in the town we got 2.4 lira. i could go on so please read other reports
