We arrived after a hard days hard riding of motorcycles thru the beautiful countryside, as part of the cannonball bike run. We were hot, tired and grumpy but were greeted with such friendly graceousness and a glass of champagne. They seems genuinely happy to receive us and have our 75 bikes parked on their beautiful hotel front. Having staying in the best hotels in each city we stopped in, this is definitely The Best. Great place, good food, great staff.

Absolutely a world class experience from the moment we walked into the door, until the taxi came for us upon departure.
The staff, amenities, the gorgeous rooms decorated with the utmost detail... everything was PERFECT.
And the meal at Zinfandels was extraordinary as well. We asked them to choose our wines (weren't familiar with Croatian varietals, and we were graciously accommodated by their Sommolier who chose a delicious Dingac.
We would visit again in a heart beat...

Historical Traveller Reviews of The Regent Esplanade Zagreb Hotel

5 star looking but ultimately disappointing

from ed2001
I really wanted to love this establishment. But unlike orson wells and various other celebrities who have graced the hotel over the years ... i came away disappointed

It's history, architecture, furniture/fittings ....and general opulent 'art deco' feel ...all make it feel special on the surface BUT .... i had a number of major and minor niggles which sadly tarnished my stay
1. the room was dusty (furniture, tv) which is just not 5 star at all
2. i was bitten a number of times overnight during the 3 day stay what i suspect where insects/bugs in the bed (this may be due to the hotel's policy of allowing animals to stay in rooms ...i'm not at all sure) Distressing and I hope they sort this out asap
3. the staff who served breakfast on many occasions forgot to bring us various items - milk, sugar etc

On the up side - most staff are friendly and dealt with any issues we had quickly, the food if fabulous, the glass of champagne on arrival is a neat idea...

So ... a five star looking place.. but the devil's in the detail ....and it doesn't come up to scratch on closer inspection

Divine time at the Regent

from Irone
We spent three divine days coddled and cared for at the Regent in Zagreb. What a splendid hotel, from check-in, to check, concierges, rooms....the whole experience was a-one. There was no other hotel which came close during our whole nineteen day stay in Germany, Slovenia, and Croatia. All I can say is AAH!!!!

Now THIS is a five star hotel!

from swampie
Yes, it's part of a big hotel chain, but it's so well done you won't even notice.
The staff is excellent, kind and helpful. The decor is perfect. The rooms beautiful, comfortable and luxurious. Even the complimentary toiletries are first rate.
I can't say a bad thing about it, and for me, that's practically unheard of. Definitely the best hotel I stayed at in Croatia.

Very luxurious

from Brabrook
We stayed in the Esplanade for 1 night at the end of our trip in Croatia which started in Split and ended in Zagreb.
It was rennovated in 2004 so everyhting is immaculate but kept to the Art Deco style.
It is a lovely hotel to chill out and be looked after in. Lots of good touches in the room to ease your stay - bottles of water and nice chocolates left on the turn down service etc. The bathroom is very lovely. All open plan, just turn the corner for large bath, shower with giant shower head and plenty of complementaries.
We don't usually stay in 5*s so it was a treat and you're unlikely to get such a good hotel for as little as this in Europe. We had room service breakfast which was much cheaper than going down to the restaurant and all beautifully presented.

ll say it again.....

It's hard to add anymore to the reviews that have already been written about this hotel but to say that these people are masters of their craft. If you want to feel like royalty this is the place to stay and you too can experience what Woody Allen,Orson Wells,Elizabeth taylor et al experienced by staying in this fantastic place. The breakfast is the best i've ever experienced in a hotel.Hotels across the world should be sending their people here to see how a hotel should be run.Amazing value.

Stayed here for 6 weeks, Absolute Luxury, staff cannot be faulted

from MacyMoo
I stayed here for 6 weeks, working in Croatia on business. The hotel is beautiful and has an air of luxury. The staff are absolutely fantastic, so polite and cannot do enough for you. The concierge service is fantastic and so helpful, use them as they know all the best restaurants, whether it be a Croatian restaurant that you require, expensive or cheap or anything else.

Breakfast is the best I've had. I loved the big open terrace where you can have breakfast or dinner in the evening. The choice is excellent from the buffet or you can have a cooked breakfast, omelettes, eggs benedict, bacon and eggs etc.

Rooms are very variable, some are smaller than others. The ones overlooking the front (looking onto the pale yellow building) are nice (the view is nice from the 4th floor and above). It was great to be able to throw open the windows in the morning, though it can get noisy with the trams. I moved around quite a few times in 6 weeks, as I was going home each weekend so had to check-in each Monday, the staff tried to give me the room that I requested after about 3 weeks and they normally came up trumps, but sometimes it was so busy it wasn't always possible.

Bathrooms were lovely, some have separate shower and bath. I stayed in the Hilton in Dubrovnik one weekend and they looked boring and cheap compared to the Regent.

This isn't the cheapest hotel as others have said but is definitely the best. The bar area and reception are luxurious, they make great cocktails. The attention to detail is impressive, flowers in the big vases in the reception area are changed about every four days. There are always staff on hand if you need anything. Room service can be a bit slow, sometimes an hours wait, but always delicious food.

You would expect after 6 weeks to find some flaws but there weren’t any. Only thing lacking was a pool, but you can't have everything.

One final thing, the waiters prefer cash tips, if you write it on the bill they don't receive it.

First-class hotel, clearly in a class of its own in Zagreb

from Travlinbrit
My wife and I stayed at the Regent Esplanade for two nights in July; it is clearly the most impressive hotel in the city. Yes, it costs a little more than the average, but it is well worth the extra. Most of us remember places because of the hotels we stay in; this hotel will remain with us always whenever we think of Zagreb. At check-in, you actually sit down at a desk, and are then offered a glass of champagne. You are made to feel that your stay is important to the hotel - you are not given the impression of being just another tourist. Our room was spacious and beautifully appointed - the bathroom even had a heated, tiled floor. We ate in the restaurant one night - the wines are expensive, but the meal was about on par with what you'd expect to pay in any major hotel in any other major city. You can walk comfortably from the hotel to all the major sights in the city. It was pointed out to us that Queen Elizabeth II had once stayed at the hotel - for this Englishman, if it's good enough for the Queen, it's good enough for me!

Regent esplanade is an excellent choice

from A TripAdvisor Member
I've stayed in this hotel for only 1 night but it was an excellent experience. The reception was perfect, the setting and decoration rich, and the rooms were great! As the other reviews on this hotel, I was also amased by the batchroom, which is luxurious to say the least, and the service and friendliness of the staff. I stayed here on business and had dinner in the downstairs restaurant which was very good (sea bass). All staff members can assit in english which is also easy. I do not know if it is located near or far from the city centre, as we did not visit the town itself. I didn't have breakfast in the hotel, so I cannot judge the quality of the breakfast.

I would stay in this hotel again, for business and for a city trip

Outstanding hotel

from justwundering
This was without a doubt, the best hotel in Zagreb. I have never had such a positive experience at a hotel before this one. The staff was extremely professional, courteous, and friendly. The hotel staff knew what I wanted before I did--and had it ready. On arrival, we received a nice glass of champagne that was quite welcome after a fairly ardous trip. The Concierge made all transfer arrangements (arrival and departure), recommended great restaurants, and arranged several day trips which were quite fun. He also made arrangements for departure including first class train tickets to Split (which saved us a fair amount of money). He included map of Split that highlighted the hotels and restaurants with our train tickets. This is one of those rare (and historical) hotels that you truly need to experience.

The Best of Zagreb

from pointfermin
With Zagreb rapidly shaking off the travails of the 20th Century, the Esplanade, built for Orient Express stop-overs, can resume its position as one of the finest urban luxury hotels in Europe. After the rigors of a drive from Venice, on top of a nine time-zone flight from Los Angeles, the tropical rain from a shower-head the size of a garbage can lid, followed by a nap folded in superbly comfortable bed linens, was as good as it gets.
The Esplanade has an excellent location, an easy 10 minute walk from Trg Jelacica (the square that is the heart of the city, and the coffee bar / cafe capital of the world), the fabulous Dolac Markets and the cathedral. The major museums are even closer. The hotel's staff is gracious and helpful, from the bellmen who took care of the car and luggage, to the
concierge who helped with directions, maps, and dinner recommendations/reservations.
There are certainly cheaper places to stay in Zagreb, but none this good, and it would cost a king's ransome to stay at a hotel of this quality in pretty much any other European city.
