Top Local Tips for Split

Diocletian Palace The area in front of the Diocletian Palace is now all pedestrian and is really nice with sails and seating, but now closed to all traffic, so driving around the city is a real nightmare. If you want to spend a few days in Split, I would advise taking a bus from the airport, then pick up the rental car when you leave town. There is also restrictions on parking everywhere in town. It is definitely not a car friendly town for tourists.

Airport Split airport is great but communications seem to be vague. So we took a taxi for less than 30 Euros. There are buses but they are located really far in front of the port and they don't seem to coincide always with the departures of the planes. If you are travelling with children or carry too much luggage just get a taxi. In the airport there are two computers with free internet!!!

Terrific Architectural Interest Diocletian's Palace, with its hodge-podge of architecture from Roman, medieval, Renaissance and contemporary periods, is a wonderful sight. Even better, people really live and work and eat and drink within the remains of the Palace wall. Narrow pedestrian alleys meander and then give way to gracious plazas. The whole downtown is a wonderful visual feast. Don't miss the Egyptian Sphinx Diocletian imported to accompany the lovely Peristyle.
