Just spent a very enjoyable holiday (Balkan Holidays) at the Montauro. Staff very pleasant and friendly and spoke reasonable English despite the lack of British guests (rather nice). Hotel needs a bit of a face lift outside but apparently it is to be demolished in 2007 and a 5-star built instead (rather a shame). Bathroom needed a bit of regrouting but basin, shower, toilet spotless (excellent maid). Bedroom slightly small with no drawer space but large wardrobe. Towels and bedding changed frequently. Downstairs the reception and dining room are light and airy and spotlessly clean. The food was excellent with a large choice of soups, pasta, salads, hot dishes, sweets - but because most guests seemed to want to get all their courses at once, this created a fairly large queue at the hot food section. A lack of a lounge (only a few tables and chairs inside) meant it was a bit difficult to stay in the hotel while we were having a bit of unseasonable weather (a few storms and a lot of rain for about 4 out of 14 days). No outdoor swimming pool but large grounds and pool shared with Hotel Eden next door (if you can get past their Pool Attendant who guards their comfortable sun loungers and sells you a more uncomfortable version for about £1.90 per day. However it is only about 2 mins to small shingle beaches and beautiful sea which was much nicer. Rovinj is delightful and was only about 20 mins walk from the hotel. There are many bars round the harbour for people watching. Prices are lower than England and there is virtually no crime - women are safe on their own. Another good thing is that the water is perfectly safe to drink and tastes lovely so don't buy bottled, you are wasting your money. Not sure whether Rovinj is suitable for children as there are few beaches but for couples and older families it is excellent - we will definitely be going back.
