We travelled as two groups, two adults and one infant (2 months), and two adults with one child (7 years). Location: For any first time travellers to Croatia, don't go for the sandy beaches....they don't have any. The beaches at this hotel and all along the front are large (in some cases flat) rocks, grassy areas, and concrete promenades. Take something soft to lie on. Medulin itself has nice water, warm and clear, almost no waves and almost no tide. Good to swim but make sure you take rubber soled shoes as some of the rocks are quite sharp, and there are the occasional spiny urchins. Take snorkelling gear if you like, you will see fish, shrimp, crabs, but be wary if you swim outside of the roped off swimming area, as there are boats large and small..some of which don't seem to care too much about the odd tourist in their way. There was a lifeguard watching the designated swimming area. There is also a small jetty that many people seemed to enjoy jumping off...not recommended for larger people, it's only about 2m deep! There were also opportunities to pay for windsurfing, banana boat rides etc etc. There is plenty of beach front for sunbathing(mostly grass) and a good scattering of trees so you can find shade easily if you like. If you want to travel around Medulin village is within easy walking distance, Pula and Prementura are 10km away by car offering historical architecture and nature reserves respectively. You can also easily walk along the sea front for some hundreds of meters and there are several sea front restaurants with reasonable prices serving excellent quality sea food and beer, good locally produced wine, and with a smile most of the time... If you are driving through Slovenia to get to the Croatian coast, take plenty of Euros for toll gates (approximately 15 Euro total one way, if you drive the full length of Slovenia). The hotel: Clean, staff spoke good German and most of them reasonable English. We took a room with a park view (cheaper, and we don't spend too much time in the room anyway). The rooms are small but clean, fitted with shower and hair dryer. The towel service did not work very well: they did not take them away the first day, and when we asked and they did take them away the second day, we never got any back again. Apparently there was a problem with the cleaning service they use, so maybe we were just unlucky there... There are no safes in the rooms, but one is available at reception. Breakfast is a buffet style with a basic but wide selection of cereal, sausage & egg, yogurt, fruit, bread with jam or honey, watery fruit juice and tea and coffee. What was good is that the restaurant is large, so not too much difficulty getting a table, and the buffet is split into two identical halves, which reduces the scrum for food somewhat. We didn't eat any other meals in the hotel, we always used the beach restaurants. The hotel is very close to the sea front, about 50m from the exit closest to the beach, past the pool (sea water), where they do regular activities for adults and children if that's your thing...(they also have some kind of "kindergarten" where younger children can draw and make models etc....looked quite good but we did not make use of it this time so cannot really say for sure) and through the grassy area to the water. The hotel lift however does not go down to this level, and the lifts are very small, so families with pushchairs beware...you firstly may have to carry them down the stairs if they don't fit in the lift (or if it does fit, if you can't be bothered to constantly fight it into the lift like us..), and once at the lobby level the best route we found was to go out of the hotel entrance and circle around the hotel (past the smelly bins....). Overall, I think the place is ok for most people with not too high expectations, but not recommended for families with infants because of the pushchair problem and size of room. I think the hotel is a bit expensive for what you get, but from what I saw I think it was par for the course for Medulin. This was our first trip to Medulin, my first to Croatia, but my wife has been to Croatia many times before. When we return to Croatia, we will go further South.
