Top Local Tips for Makarska
Excusions from the hotel. If you get a good deal on car hire it is worth organising your own excursions. You can stay longer and see more, plus the cars are air conditioned. We got three days for the price of two and the car was delivered to and collected from the hotel. Don't hire a car before you get there as it is cheaper to do it there. (Unless you need something specific of course)
Out and about Book the river trip and meal at the mill, the visit to Dubrovnic and white water rafting . Book the first two through Thomas Cook and the rafting from the guy in the town square.
Very efficient bus service Split/Dubrovnik Get a bus timetable - the buses run from Makarska to Split every 30 mins or so. A round trip for 2 people cost us 180 Kuna (about £20) We caught the 10am bus opposite Tommy's supermarket on the main road through Makarska. Going to Split, the journey was approx 80 mins, and there are some spectacular views (there's a beautiful town called Omis which is on the way to Split and definitely worth a vsiit) . We caught the bus initially, because I wasn't prepared to pay the 360 Kuna EACH (ie: about £80 for the pair of us) our travel company wanted. However once we'd got used to the timetable and how it worked, we found the buses to be quick, clean, and very efficient. I would recommend booking a trip to Dubrovnik through your operator however - it's a 3 hour trip and you have to cross the border into Bosnia-Herzogovena. A long day, but the commentary is interesting if you're into finding out more about Croatia, and Dubrovnik is spectacular.

I can't recommend Croatia enough, and the Thomas Cook rep was excellent.
The Croatian school holidays start in early July, so it can get quite busy then. It also gets very hot at this time.
This is also a great destination for the more discerning younger crowd who are looking for a water-sports holiday with a diving school, jet-skis, and para-sailing very close to the hotel.
We had a wonderful time, and will be going back next year as there is so much to see and do.
