Excellent choice
from NazarethBest View in Dubrovnik
from A TripAdvisor MemberExcelsior - Great location and amenities
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe hotel itself is really nice looking - one old building and one new building connected. You can get outside to big decks at almost every level for an incredible view of Lokrum and Old Town. The hotel had every imaginable amenity. I loved the free breakfast in the mornings as well as the huge indoor pool. The outdoor rock ledge is great for sunbathing and for jumping off into the sea. The views of Old Town at sunset from the hotel's many decks are amazing. We had great drinks outside several nights. It is definitely a luxury property - great big robes in the bedrooms, coffee served in china cups, nice toiletries.
The front desk staff wasn't particularly friendly but we didn't see much of them anyway after switching rooms. All of the dining room and housekeeping staff were great.
I had read reviews that said the hotel was too far from Old Town, but that's not at all true. It was maybe a ten minute walk straight down the road, and I preferred staying outside the city in order to have such a great view of it. The connected restaurant, Taverna Rustica was fantastic. All in all, an amazing hotel if you are visiting Dubrovnik and want to stay in a luxe spot.
s the little touches that count
from fortune82Superb air conditioned room with spa bath, fluffy robes and slippers, little cakes, flowers and wine on arrival - fantastic mini-bar, top quality service. Unforgettable.

Great experience would stay again but should be rated as a 4 star hotel.
Excellent Hotel..
from BrianPBDidn't try the restaurants in the hotel, as there are many fine restaurants in Dubrovnik itself, however I would recommend a drink in the bar, just for the view over the sea..
We paid extra for the sea view room, which I would recommend as the view over the old city and the sea are amazing. Rooms are roomy, with a large bathroom which had a double sink and a bath/shower.
We also had a balcony, big enough for a table and a couple of chairs, perfect for a late night drink.
One I would recommend, and one I will come back to.
Style with a View
from A TripAdvisor MemberIf you are going to visit Dubrovnik, the Excelsior is without doubt the best choice for its location (5 minutes walk from old town), the stunnnig views over to Locrum island and the old town, plus excellent service from the staff. Mindful of others review comments, we paid extra for both a sea view and a balcony, only to find we were upgraded to a spacious suite which was delightful. You do need to be careful over room choices here, as the hotel is cut into the cliff side, was built in three sections at different times so relatively few rooms actually having a true sea view.
I note other's comments about this not being really a 5 star standard, compared with other International hotels, but that is a bit harsh in our experience. Certainly the atmosphere is very relaxed and there are little things around that remind you this was only recently an Eastern European country - e.g. you cannot change travellers cheques at the hotel. I suspect that is the way it is generally here, certainly after visiting other hotels in the area while we were there, I would say the Exclesior is probably as good as hotels get in Croatia just now.
Whatever your expectations over ratings there are still plenty of genuine 5 star touches about the Excelsior - bubbly at breakfast, 'proper' air con that does not turn off when you leave your rooom (even the corridors are air conditioned), plenty of attentive staff, unlimited towels and sunbeds, a pianist on the terrace each night, valet parking. There is no beach as such, but a very spacious lower terrace adjoining the large indoor pool where you can sunbathe and dive straight into the crystal clear waters. The cafe at the waters edge is also reasonable, so if you want waiter served drinks or snacks without even leaving your sunbed this is the place for you...!
We were on a half board package so dined in the main dining room each evening, where the style is slightly quirky and certainly different - the entire buffet is lit by candles and the dishes set on stands amongst flowers, with no labels to help you guess which dish is which. This does not pose a real problem as the Maitre De was very eager to explain each dish for you, carry your soup back to the tables etc. The food itself is good quality and no doubt top level for Croatia, though strangely they offered a very limited range of vegetables.
Interestingly, despite the hotel being full, the dining room in the evenings is usually quiet as the majority of guests stay on B&B and use the old town restaraunts instead. This was not just the case at the Excelsior, we visited the Arentina next door and found their dingin room deserted at night as well. The upside of this for half boarders was that an outdoor terrace table under the stars, looking over the floodlit old town is guaranteed every night - stunning views to watch as you dine, including watching the the cruise ships with their twinkling lights and tenders continuously ferrying passengers in and out of the port.
We hired a car for a few days to travel around the area, which is only practical at the Excelsior because of the valet parking service. The centre of Dubrovnik is all one way zig zags (down the side of the cliff) and parking is scarce/expensive. Unless you want to spend all your time going round and round trying to park, use the free valet parking service as we did and just chuck them the keys when you get back and they get the car whenever you want - the best! Driving in Croatia is fine, but there are no motorways yet that reach Dubrovnik. Also the locals have developed a slightly alarming technique of overtaking on blind bends that is not recommended, so hang back it isn't worth it...!! We went down to Montegro one day, across the (still very formal) border posts which brings further stunning scenary. Outside of Dubriovik everywhere is noticeably poorer, we could not even find a lunch time cafe that served food once we got to Montenegro, all the locals on the beach simply brought thier own and just bought coffee/cokes etc.
Hope this is useful feedback. We have much appreciated others' genuine (i.e. non brochure) insights when holiday planning, so this returns the favour.
Overall good value, best view and great location
from Shellybelly7The location of the hotel is great - close enough to wander down to the old town for dinner.
The decor of this hotel is getting a little bit dated, but this didn't really matter as the service and facilities make up for it. In the heat of summer, it's great to have the sea/swimming facilities to pop back to after a hard day's sightseeing. Great breakfast, Rusitica restaurant was also a treat - try and reserve a sea-side table. Any taxis booked showed up on time, and concierge managed all this so you didn't have to panic when a few of you were waiting etc. Overall a great place to stay - we miss it already!
Best hotel in Dubrovnik
from Lynsey13We paid extra for the sea view (for £20 per person per night I was really expecting great things), and were not disappointed. Only wish we had paid the same again & had a balcony as well.
The food was all you could hope for and more. The drinks menu was almost too long, and I defy anyone to need lunch after the huge breakfast buffet !
I'm not sure if the 5 stars are completely accurate - more like a very good 4 star in my opinion. However, this meant fellow holiday makers were all of a good pedigree and the atmosphere was far mor relaxed than other stuffy 5 star hotels I have been to !!
We picked the Excelsior based on location, and definitely made the right choice - all the other hotels around are too far out from the old town with views that simply don't compare.
Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone at any time, we loved it.
Perfect Stay!
from techman56The best hotel I have stayed in yet!
Top Local Tips for Dubrovnik
food speciality seafood restaurants abound and the speciality is freshly caught fish and seafood. many restaurants to choose from within the Old Town all reasonably priced and with welcoming staff
Walking round the wall at Dubrovnik Be careful if you walk around the wall of Dubrovnik. It is something well worth doing but can be slippery due to the marble like stones ....... and when I did it the weather was extremely hot! Take plenty of water and don't do it in the in the high heat of the day.
Good dining opportunity at a reasonable price Peric Family Restaurant is just inside the Old Town coming in from the south as the road reaches sea level. It's on the left. Very nice staff, both indoor and outdoor dining, wonderful food at reasonable prices. The house wine is OK and worth the money. There's a really good piano player from about 8pm onward. We went there 2 times in four nights and would go back again and again.

Overall. Rooms: small and tired. Service: indifferent and at times staff were rude. Food: horrid - thick dry slices of tuna dressed with lemon sorbet were served as Tuna Carpaccio. Spa: I enquired about a massage 3 times without any response. Private beach: a concrete creation.
The only saving grace is the swimming pool which is a good size but in a rather an ugly setting.
