Our stay at the hotel Argosy was fab! it was clean, the food was good, the views from the restaurant were out of this world! The staff were friendly and although its a three star they treated you like you were in a five star! The only downside was the outside needs a lick of paint!I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing and pampering time.
Worth it

Beautiful views, clean and friendly, if a little expensive

Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Argosy

OK..expected better

from thelbie
The Argosy needs some exterior and interior renovation. We were with a group of 40 people and were delegated to the least favorite rooms. Long walk from elevator to a room that needed a refurbishment. Window curtains had to be left closed as the windows looked out onto the glass enclosed corridor that connected the buildings. Not only did they have to be left closed but they had huge stains on them. A/C barely functioned. Bathroom in outdated lime green tile grouted and re-grouted a number of times. However it was clean. Beds were clean and comfortable. We did have a balcony but it also looked out onto the corridor and directly onto the balcony across from us. On the plus side, the pool area was nice, there is a small pool for kids and a larger one for adults. In May that water was COLD. There is a lovely walking park area with beautiful views of the adriatic. Bus into Dubrovnik is steps away from the hotel. The beach is not that great. All rock. Stairs lead down to it. This hotel is located with a group of other hotels that share shops/restaurants etc in the square. Breakfast was good with plenty buffet items and the seating area had wonderful views. The servers at Breakfast were not that efficient or friendly. If I were to be in the area again I would opt for the hotel next door.

Liked the Argosy

from cbir
We stayed in the Argosy from May 2-May 5. It was fine. We had a sea view room for 100 Euro/night. The first room they gave us was not very nice, but when we complained about the view, we got a much better room with sunset views. The bed was comfy, the bathroom more than adequate for Europe, and a balcony. The food was OK, but the drinks were expensive. The public areas were a bit worn, but we think from "the suits" that were inspecting the place that they are upgrading slowly but surely. They have a minibar so we brought in wine and snacks from a market. All buffet meals - I'm not a big fan of buffet. We had better luck with food in old town. Don't miss the experience of a good meal in a cafe in old town. The bus to town was very convenient - just down the hill from the hotel to the Pile Gate at old town. About 15 minutes. Buy your tickets at the hotel. 8 Kuna for an hour.

The staff was fine. Helpful but not overly familiar. The beach nearest the hotel with a cafe was rocky, but the Copa Beach (I think it was public) was nice. Pebbly with chaise lounges for rent. When staying at Argosy, you also can use the facilities at the 4 star Hotel President. The beach and pool there were much nicer. They also have an a la carte restaurant. There is a shopping/cafe area that we found on our last day there.

I was there in the off season. I think in high season it would be very nice. I would recommend it.

Great value for money

from NikantAustralia
We booked a double room with "sea view" and balcony for four nights off the internet at a pretty good rate (around $100AUD a night). Although the Argosy appears to be a little "run down" in the public areas (outside, lobby, corridors, etc) - the rooms themselves are quite modern and spacious. The cable TV was pretty good. The bathroom was quite big and it came with a bath. It appeared that the rooms were recently refurbished.

Breakfast was OK (a bit of a continental europe affair without toast)
but sometimes it was a little variable in quality and service (it was a psychic mind war to get a pot of coffee sometimes).

It is really easy to get to (despite its location) - catch a number 7 bus from the Bus Station (as you walk out of the bus station waiting room - it is just to the left) or catch a 6 bus from in town and get off at the last stop - it is right there. The buses are very frequent and last till after midnight so it is easy to get around.
There was a small shopping centre next door to the hotel - with a cheap pizza restaurant that was OK. If you are "brave" - it takes about 40 mins or so to walk into town.

The hotel had a big pool area - although the pool wasn't heated and it was too cold to swim in it at April.

The only complaints (which are pretty minor) - yhe crowd that this place attracts seems to be "old retirees" as there were heaps of old irish people when we were staying (probably that irish reviewer was staying at the same time). So this isn't the place if you are young and want to party on at the hotel (unless you want to socialise with retirees). Also some of the hotel lobby staff were a little abrupt (but this could just be a Croatian thing).

Overall - I would recommend the Argosy for great value for money.

Loved Dubrovnik and also Hotel argosy

from NoreenDublin
Just had a wonderful holiday in Dubrovnik. Hotel Argosy was very nice - rooms were very clean and bright. The food was beautiful - buffet style with a great selection for breakfast and also dinner. The only negative thing about our stay there was the fact that the music finished at 11.00pm every night and then it was time to go to bed.....The reason for this early finish appears to be the location of the bar in the open lobby and the fact that the bedrooms seem to be situated just above the open bar. The Hotel should organise entertainment in some other area further away from the bedrooms. Location of this hotel is lovely and the views from the dining room are brilliant. The Old Town is within easy reach from the Hotel by bus. Would love to visit this City again and would be happy to stay at this Hotel.

An enjoyable stay

from Co
We stayed at the Hotel Argosy in September 2006. We tend to stay in 4* hotels, so I was interested to see how this 3* hotel would compare. I must say I was impressed. Visually it is not great – a 70s style concrete structure – but it was very clean and the staff were friendly and efficient. Our room was on the third floor, and we had paid extra for a sea view which was well worth it. Looking at the position of other rooms around the hotel, I don’t think the stay in those would be so enjoyable. Our room did not have a large floor space but had a high ceiling which made it seem light and airy. We had air conditioning and a large ceiling fan, so it was very easy to keep cool in the high temperatures outside. We had a minibar fridge plus an extra fridge where we could keep our own drinks cool – genius! The bathroom was a decent size and also very clean. The only downsides were that there was no hairdryer and no mirror over the dressing table.

The food at the hotel was good, better than most hotels I have stayed at, but does get very samey if you are there for a fortnight. There is a small shopping complex next to the hotel with a couple of restaurants where you can get pizza for about £3.50, so eating out is not an expensive option. Eating out in nearby Dubrovnik is also not expensive and there is a good choice of venues.

We went on several of the Thomson’s excursions, which were all very interesting but the destinations always involved several hours on a coach to get there – not a well publicised fact.

There are a few hotels grouped together at Babin Kuk but everything seems to centre around the Hotel President next door to the Argosy. The No 6 bus to Dubrovnik stops there and all the excursions picked up/dropped off there for the surrounding hotels.

All things considered, an enjoyable stay.

convenient and clean

from jenniferindublin
The good: The staff is great. The rooms with sea view are wonderful and a great value as well. We upgraded our stay mid-way through our visit and it felt like a completely different hotel. the bus service to town is easy and frequent. The not so good: I found the food very average, am surprised to hear the breakfast buffet described as excellent. The decor of the lobby is very 70's so we didn't spend much time there. This hotel is full of senior citizen group tours,(not that anything is wrong with that). We explored all the pool's of the sister hotels located right next to Argosy. Most of them had loud 80's music playing or even louder group events led by somebody with a megaphone screaming which was unfortunate. The pools were all comperable I thought. Might as well stick with the one at Argosy. One other tip - we took a day trip to Lopud island (50 min boat ride) and took a 25 min walk to Sunj beach. Its a very nice sandy beach and I'd recommend. As the concierge for details as the private ferries to this island are literally 5 times more expensive then the government run ferry that only runs once per day.

Definitely recommend Argossy

from katiescarletUK
Stayed at the Argossy for a week in August 2006 and can absolutely recommend both the hotel and Dubrovnik as a great place to stay for a week. Hotel food was excellent (particularly the breakfast buffet) and poolside salads were a treat!
Room was average - small size with air con and was definitely worth paying a bit extra for a balcony with a beautiful (private) view over the sea. Bus service into Dubrovnik was extremely regular, but during August it is extremely busy and can take up to 25 / 30 minutes at peak times - but as Argossy is at the start of the bus route, you were always guaranteed a seat. Would completely recommend the Argossy.

Relaxing and good value

from RosB
Stayed here 4 nights while sight-seeing in Dubrovnik and found it very friendly, comfortable and relaxing. There's a convenient bus service into Dubrovnik up to 2 am and after the busy tourist trap of town, it was nice to have the pool, beach etc. You can spend a quiet evening relaxing in the bar and we did have a god bop at the pool disco on Saturday night at another hotel on the same complex. Hotel staff were very professional and welcoming.

Reasonable hotel to stay in Dubrovnik

from Cata-man
We spent 2 nights in early August.

The best thing of the hotel is that has a bus stop in front of it, and you can be in the Old Dubrovnik in 10-15 minutes.

Hotel seems to be an early 1980's hotel that has not been renewed, but is very well conservated.

Rooms & Baths are clean and well conservated.

Beach and swimming pool available.

Food is normal, and beverages at the restaurant seemed to me quite expensive.

Very enjoyable holiday

from A TripAdvisor Member
The standard of food was very high. The rooms were very spacious with excellent air conditioning. The staff were very friendly. The hotel was spotlessy clean at all times. There was good entertainment every night. The hotel is located right beside beautiful beaches with fantastic views. Excellent bus service, leaving right beside the hotel every five minutes until 2am into Dubrovnik. Overall, would highly recommend this hotel for a peaceful stay, ideal for couples.

Top Local Tips for Dubrovnik

great pizza Mea Culpa Cafe in Old town Dubrovnik has incredibly good pizza

From Dubrovnik Airport 1. The Dubrovnik Airport has an ATM!! This makes it very easy to get kunas on arrival. 2. Atlas bus company provides a bus for 35kuna per person to Pile Gate. From here you can get a taxi or city bus to where you need to be!

Local buses Very cheap 80p one way, Normally every 5 minutes and run passed most hotels
