We returned 25 years later for our 25th wedding anniversary having spent a wonderful honeymoon at the hotel in 1980. How can you improve on perfection. Dramatic changes had overtaken the country and the people but they were absolutely the best. Nothing was a hassle, and the staff objective seemed to be make the guests happy. Would go back every year if we could afford it.

Stayed for one week and was very disappointed with it. The steps were a problem to us. No tea making facilities in the room. Indoor pool was very cold and a charge of 20 euro for jacuzzi. No complimentary slippers as per brochure. Very limited organised tours and uninformed tour guides. All in all not very satisfactory for the cost of the stay, won't be going back.

We stayed in Hotle Coratia for one week. The hotel had facilities to suit everyone. The food was excellent and the room with sea view amazing.The steps to and from Cavtat were no problem at all. The staff were most helpful and efficient. We had a brilliant holiday.

Excellent hotel

We took a holiday to Croatia, we were going to Bol but our travel agent changed our holiday to the Croatia hotel in Cavtat and what a hotel first class service friendly staff fantastic food and even though there was 1000 guests at the hotel you would not of noticed where do they hide them, Cavtat is a beautiful little village with heaps of history and character walking the narrow streets you half expect to be confronted by a scene from a pirate movie you can feel the love and the warmth of the place. We got engaged in Cavtat and will be returning for our honeymoon we bought out rings in Cavtat and Cavtat holds a special place in our hearts. Hotel Croatia has everything we wanted in a hotel and we have booked to return in 2007. As other people have mentioned the steps, they are not that bad gives you a chance to walk off the excellent food at the hotel.

The photos on the website don't do this hotel Jutsice, it's a beautiful hotel in a stunning location, yes the steps are steep, but you need the exercise because the food is so good. The hotel was full when we were there last week, but you would never have known it. Always spare sun beds on the beach and round the pool. We will be back.

Exellent Hotle. Food and service first rate. The hotel was very clean. I have my 40th there and maid noticed cards in room and on my return i found a complementary bottle of wine and a letter from the hotel congratulating me!

Fantastic hotel that couldn't be faulted for a minute. For someone who enjoys working out and keeping fit, it was ideal with its large swimming pools, well equipped gym, not to mention it's steps! The only thing that it could be faulted for was the over supply of delicious and varied food which was virtually impossible to resist! It suits all age groups from young to old and from a lively to quiet atmosphere.

This is a lovely Hotel, not suitable though for people unable to climb 127 steps from the seafront to the Hotel. Two nice large pools and seafront sunbathing area all with snack bars. The service,food and rooms are excellent and although the Hotel is large it never seems crowded.There are lovely quiet areas overlooking the sea for a quiet read both inside and out.The only drawback is the drinks are fairly pricey so most people walk into the village after dinner where there are plenty of comfortable bars.

Myself and my husband enjoyed a one week stay at hotel croatia at the beginning of July 2006. Before we went, I queried hotel croatia on this site and it never recieved anything less than 4 stars in an overall rating. Then to my surpise, having returned from a lovely stay in this hotel, I read recent reviews awarding 2 and 3 stars out of 5...I would like to share my honest experience with you, why I would recommend hotel croatia and why I prefer Cavtat to Dubrovnik. Firstly, I think that we should all bear in mind that croatia is an up and coming holiday destination, and bear in mind the recent troubles that this country endured and how they have come a long way to put croatia on the travel agents books! The hotel is in the perfect location, literally a 10minunte journey from Dubrovnik airport. The hotel is sprawling! As noted, 2 swimming pools, spas, treatments etc; We stayed on the 9th floor, a twin room. I could not complain about the room, immaculate bathroom, towels changed and room tidied daily. Just be careful with the air conditionimng, in relation to over usage and picking up a nasty chest infection! The drinks are double the price of that in cavtat village, but you are on your holidays and you dont mind buying one or two in the hotel bar before you go for a meal or for a night cap..Manhattan cocktails went down a treat with my other half! We went on a b&b basis, which I would recommend. The breakfast was delighful, as was the manager. I have never seen a man enjoy his job so much, so much that you could see he was a very proud man! There are a handful of restaurants in cavtat village, my favourite being the Dalmactia restaurant (for lunch and dinner!) We sampled a few restaurants, and to be honest a simple dish like Spaghetti Bolongse tasted very different in each...so it is very pot luck what you order. Fish is the delicacy in all restaurants! We did discover a hidden treasure in the hotel...Tavern Dubrovnik...it is absolutely fantastic..on the 2nd floor beside the night club..honestly, I would have ate there each night if I had of discovered this on the 1st night! Grilled fillet of Seabass...making my mouth water thinking about this! On a Friday, the hotel holds a Fishermans Buffet on their beach at 8pm, it costs approx 30 euros each, but you get unlimted food and drink all night plus entertainment..I would highly recommend this! We visited the walled city of Dubrovnik by water bus..to read about the history is amazing and the city is still recovering from the recent aggression by neighbouring countries and this is evident by the work in progress on certain buildings..but it has a sense of Venice about it, its layout, small laneways, but actually more preferable than Venice! We preferred Cavtat for our stay as it was more unspoilt and more peaceful. If we were to return to croatia, yes, I would stay in cavtat and hotel croatia again without hesitation. A few last tips before I sign off: 1) Although travel agents state many places accept Euro, I would change the majority of my money into Kunas and it is alot less hassle (the hotel has a bureau de change anyway), 2) If possible stay in a room above the receptions area (Floor 4+), 3) There are 126 steps down to Cavtat village, can be quite tiresome, so we often
walked down to the end of the road from the hotel and walked down through the houses (seemed less daunting...you will know what I mean when you get there!) Enjoy.

Beautifully located and pleasant hotel, normally polite staff.
Please note - if you can't stand red hot heat throughout the day, don't come anywhere near Dalmatia between July and August.
-Good Choice of foods for supper, often great seafood and plenty of salads. Breakfast good, but not much daily change.
-Negative: Must sit where told in cantine, so
-Positioned 127 steps (yes, I counted) above Cavtat itself, so may be exhausting in +36 during the day - which was the case.
-Great view from our room, but we had to pay an extra £126 for a week's sea view on top floor, but it's worth it!
-Rooms are clean and no old cracked floor tiles or furniture
-Air conditioning almost life-saving
-Keep balcony closed at night with lights on! We some giant unwanted visitors such as locusts and scary bugs!
-Nowhere in the area will you find nice sandy beaches - but the best shingle beaches are a good 20-minute walk at other, cheaper Hotels. Otherwise there is a straight-deep rocky-cliffy "beach" right outside the hotel, even an elevator comes down to it. Very good, as it isn't crowded.
-Don't come to Cavtat for nightlife - you won't get much! The dancing-drinking-jumping place in Cavtat is where the shingle beach is, so far away from Hotel Croatia.
-If you want peaceful, quality time, and you are not young, Croatia Hotel is highly recommended. Just get a good room.
In the end, there are many more positives than negatives, so if over 20-something, go to Hotel Cavtat. Otherwise, for younger people, an altogether more active place is Budva, Montenegro.

Dissapointed with the Hotel Croatia

Just returned from a week at the Hotel Croatia in Cavtat. Although we had a relaxing holiday, overall we were disapointed with our stay..
The hotel had all the facilities you could want, pools, bars, restaurants, disco and even a casino. The hotel is in a fantastic location with amazing views on paper it should be the ideal holiday resort.
The problem is the hotel has no character and the staff are
very unfriendly, even a sizeable tip failed to elicit the desired result.
The food was plentiful, but only average in quality, the buffet style breakfast and dinner is held in a dinning room which seats 800 people, seating is organised in such a way that you sit at the same table for all your meals.
This can mean sharing a table, which in my opinion is not an ideal situation.
The hotel organises a weekly meal in the waterfront restaurant for which they charge a €25.00 entrance fee. Not really worth the money as although you could drink all the wine you wanted, the food was the same as in the diningroom and when we wanted a bottle of water instead of the wine we had to pay for it!
The location of the hotel although affording wonderful views, also causes problems when trying to access the local ameneties as to reach Cavtat one must decend over a hundred steps and more importantly climb back up them to return.
The Hotel has a large conference centre which although unoccupied during our stay is obviously the main attraction.

This hotel is just too big. We stayed for one week in its sister hotel in Dubrovnik, the Grand Villa Argentina, which was super, so to come to the Croatia was a huge disappointment. The weather was the tail end of a heat wave and the air conditioning couldn't cope. There was no way to turn it up in our room. Our bathroom was below standard. The bath had moved in its support so had been wedged to keep it stable. The tiles around the shower end of the bath were a horrid grey which I think was mould but didn't dare examine more closely. The ventilation system was very poor in the bathroom. Our adult daughter had a cockroach problem. She contacted the staff, who when told there were some horrible animals in her bathroom, enquired whether they were green? The staff came and put some tissues in the hole the bugs came out from. Otherwise, the rooms were just basic and functional. There were so many people around the pool and down by the sea. Cavtat is a beautiful place and we found one or two really nice restaurants. The stairs back to the hotel after a trip to town are a bit daunting but you get used to them. Although the setting is lovely, don't go to this hotel for a peaceful relaxing time. Definitely not 4 or 5 stars. The hotel needs a complete revamp. We loved Cavtat, shame about the hotel.

Our room looked like it hadn't been updated in the past 30 years! There was damp marks on the wall and ceiling, the bed linen was moth eaten and the mirror in the bathroom had a crack down the lenght of it that was stuck together with masking tape.
It has no character - it reminded me of the conference hotels you find around the major airport. The hotel had all the right facilities and location, but was not geared for holiday makers. To get to the swimming pool you have to walk through the conference centre - so you are walking past high profile exhibitions and people in suits whilst you are in your beach attire!
The food is dreadful, the bars have the atmosphere of an airport lounge.
And everything is expensive! Drinks at the bars and restaurants in the town are half the price of those at the hotel. And the food in town is a lot better - although don't expect to find a cheap meal.
But the worst thing of all - the service is appalling. We initially thought it was due to a language barrier but having been into Cavtat we realised that this was not the case and that the hotel staff either had never been trained or the management team is just useless.
Locally this hotel is classified as a 5*, but the UK tour operators deem it 4*. I would classify this 2*.

I have just returned from the 5 Star Hotel Croatia in Cavtat. The Hotel is in a wonderful location set into the hillside above the lovely village of Cavtat. Note that there are @100 steps down to and up to the hotel each time.
The Hotel has all the facilities you would expect - lovely outdoor pool, indoor pool, Spa, bars, etc, etc. However, everyone was hugely disappointed with the food - a buffet-style dinner each evening. There was a lot of choice but the quality of food was very low. It was evident that this lead to food ie cheese, cold meats, biscuits being topped up and coming out each night. The lasagne on 'Italian Night' had no cheese sauce in it!!
Alot of guests although had paid for half-board gave up on the food and ate dinner in the restaurants of Cavtat, some of which manage to produce far better meals than the hotel.
Drinks and snacks at the Hotel are very over priced - two chicken sandwiches, chips, and two small bottles of water - £14.

Just back from one week at the Hotel Croatia very relaxed holiday overall.
The hotel was fabulous but must point out that if you have paid for a sea view try to get one on floors 6 upwards. Our first night we were put on the 1st floor which is below ground level and very dark even with the sea view, asked next morning to change rooms and there was no problem staff were very helpful. Cavtat itself it magical with the sun sets every night.

Just returned from a two week stay at this hotel and can't help but feel disappointed with the experience. I think it is important to firstly mention that the hotel is very clean and offers on paper many good facilites like two swimming pools, a health spa, plenty of places to eat and drink etc. The problem I have with this hotel is that it is completely souless and lacking in character. On nearly everyday of our stay conferences took place so the hotel was full of business people rushing around with their laptops talking shop. It became obvious during our stay that the hotel's main focus was based around the conferences and the holiday makers were of less importance as a consequence. Every night in the piano bar we had to endure the same artist banging out the same music, we learnt during our stay that the singer had been employed for the WHOLE season with no further options for the guests! What made matters worse was the fact that the only functional television in the whole hotel (apart from the rooms)was situated in the piano bar, this particualry important as the World Cup was on and we couldn't watch it properly. It was clear that the management didn't want the football on during our stay
The drinks generally in the hotel were very expensive and when you take into consideration what the staff are probably being paid, daylight robbery. The staff themselves were generally very polite and curteous apart from the odd one or two who were pretty rude. Tipping is expected.

We had a fabulous one week stay in this beautiful location. Hotel facilities were excellent and the staff were courteous and friendly, Hotel Croatia is in pristine condition. One little gripe -drink is too expensive in hotel compared to the local resort of cavtat.
Dubrovnik Riviera, Delightfull in Summer

My wife and I both aged 59 stayed for 1 week in what can only be described as an idyllic location and perfect hotel. With the only exception, for people with walking difficulties, being the location of the hotel 126 steps up a steep hillside the hotel was immaculate for an early summer's break. The rooms were large, bright and clean in our case with a terrace as we were on the bottom floor. Reception is four floors up, with six further residential floors. The food both at breakfast and dinner was excellent with a choice from which even the most finicky of eaters could find something suitable. Having read some reports that the food was not always perfect I can only assume that either the hotel has improved its standards or the people concerned were from a different planet.
There are both outdoor and indoor saltwater swimming pools but during our stay we sunbathed outside but swam indoors, the water feeling much warmer this way. Drink prices in the hotel are twice the price of the local village but are on par with any other 5 star hotel of this stature. At nightime there is a piano par where you can sit indoors or out and two floors below there is another bar with live music and a dance floor which was empty during our stay. There is also a casino open from June onwards. The staff in the hotel and local people in the village speak good english and are very polite and helpfull.
A bus leaves twice in the morning direct from the hotel to the main gate of the old town of Dubrovnik, which is well worth the visit., at the cost of £2 each way or the local bus leaves the village every half hour at the price of £1 each way but leaves you in the middle of nowhere in Dubrovnik new town. The tourist bus returns to Cavtat at 3.00pm.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a peaceful and relaxing break from early summer to late September and given the chance I will be going again in the future.

There are both outdoor and indoor saltwater swimming pools but during our stay we sunbathed outside but swam indoors, the water feeling much warmer this way. Drink prices in the hotel are twice the price of the local village but are on par with any other 5 star hotel of this stature. At nightime there is a piano par where you can sit indoors or out and two floors below there is another bar with live music and a dance floor which was empty during our stay. There is also a casino open from June onwards. The staff in the hotel and local people in the village speak good english and are very polite and helpfull.
A bus leaves twice in the morning direct from the hotel to the main gate of the old town of Dubrovnik, which is well worth the visit., at the cost of £2 each way or the local bus leaves the village every half hour at the price of £1 each way but leaves you in the middle of nowhere in Dubrovnik new town. The tourist bus returns to Cavtat at 3.00pm.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a peaceful and relaxing break from early summer to late September and given the chance I will be going again in the future.
Top Local Tips for Cavtat
Rooms with a view Some previous 'Trip advisors' had incorrectly stated that 'all rooms have a view and therefore no need to pay the extra'. I can confirm that NOT all rooms have a view, basically you get what you pay for! The extra cost is well worth the beautiful view of the ocean or don't pay at look at trees! It really does make a difference when you return to your room after a day in the sun and sip a chilled glass of wine looking at the sunset......
I used Croatia Tours and they are really good Watch out for the taxi drivers ripping you off!!
Restaurant Galija Keep walking up the street until you find Galija - lovely atmosphere and great food - particularly steak. Try Feral for lunch and pizza in the evenong - very friendly
