Top Local Tips for Ieper
places to visit A short drive away from Old Tom ( heading north) is the Yorkshire lines. This is a restored trench network in the middle of an industrial estate. There are no guides situated here but the information boards contain a good overview of the construction during the 3 main phases. It is free of charge and well worth a visit. If you cross the canal, there are memorials to to Yorkshire regiment who defended and died for these canel banks. I would recommend that prior to the Yorkshire lines, you visit the Town centre museum and its current exhibition Flanders Fields. This is quite harrowing but give a tremendous introduction and insight to the horrific events of the area. Entry here is 7.5 euros. Also visited was the Hooge Crater museum. Situated in an old church the audio commentary that was broadcast was at just the right pace to follow the exhibition contents without feeling rushed. Entry here was 5 euros and very worth it. Unfortunately there was one area we did feel let down and seemed to almost leave a feeling of exploitation and profiteering. This was Hill 62. This is an excavated area of trenches and what can only be described as piles of war junk, not the respected memorabilia we had seen at other locations. Apart from the owner collecting the 7 euros per person there was no one to ask any questions and little to no information available as you walked around the network of trenches or onsite “museum” Perhaps museum is the wrong word to use, more appropriate description would be a bungalow piled with irrelevant material albeit military but not from the trench location. Maybe the owner had trawled car boot sales and flee marked to fill the place but quantity is never a good substitute for quality. And as for the moth eaten stuffed foxes… well what can I say.
Value dining Poppy's steakhouse nearby Old Tom's - tremendous food at really low prices - Flemish stew delicious
Poppys Restaurant Ate here for 2 nights and service, quality and price were all excellent
