The hotel was within easy walking distance from the Metro station. The hotel was warm and comfortable and the staff made us very welcome.

We were very happy with Van Belle Hotel. Location was good near train station (we did have a little difficulty finding it but that was probably our fault), rooms very clean and excellent meals, tarif reasonable. A bonus was free shuttle back to train station.

The hotel rooms were very small, but clean and tidy. The people were nice and the area was quite. We were close to all the sights. Overall good and would stay again.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Van Belle Hotel

No real complaints about the Van Belle

from mike2600
My partner & I stayed in Aug 2005. We had booked over the internet, on a deal with Eurostar, and it was CHEAP, so having seen all these reviews, we were prepared for the worst but....

We easily walked from the Gare Midi (10mins), in the rain, & didn't get too wet.
Reception spoke english, french, flemish and german, they may speak more. They were all polite, organised and very patient with a young american girl who clearly expected them to organise ALL of her stay in Brussels. Down to the very last detail.
The room was very clean, but the decorations a little tired. Our room was quiet, but those overlooking the street would be noisier. Clean sheets (with no holes!). Nice clean towels. Clean bathroom, again a little tired. Hot tap for the sink did not work well, but the bath / shower was excellent, so this did not matter. Lots of hot water. No mosquitos (see other reviews). No A/C but it is not needed. Room safe worked well.
Very acceptable continental breakfast (until 10:30am) was included: Tea, coffee, breads, jams, yoghurt, eggs, sausage, cheese. Absolutely NO cockroaches!

It is a 6-8 minute walk to the centre of town: Easy.
The neighbourhood is a little run-down, but that makes it more interesting, and we felt completely safe at all times (day & very late at night).
It is a good deal for the price, but it is not the Hilton. We would stay there again.

Location a disappointment

from A TripAdvisor Member
Probably the worst thing about this hotel was its location - situated just outside the city limits, it is in a fairly shabby, unpleasant area. My unease about the neighbourhood only increased when someone tried to grab my handbag as a walked home (with my boyfriend) from the city one night!
Having said that, the hotel itself was fine for the price. The room and ensuite were clean and comfortable, and the buffet breakfast was very nice. It is only a 15 minute walk into the city centre, and the eurostar and metro stations are also within walking distance, so travel expenses are minimal. Staff were not especially friendly, but it may have been more a language issue than anything else.

Give this Hotel a miss

My wife and myself arrived for a four day stay in Brussels and electronically booked into the van belle before hand...Upon our arrival we found the hotel located in a Ghetto the surrounding buildings were in a state of disrepair.
The photos on the Web are not of the current Van Belle. If they are of the Hotel they were not taken recently
The car park is located at the site of the Hotel accessed through and over a deserted building site- The car park is surrounded by a Steel Fence and a gate - operated from the Hotel - similar to Belfast years ago....I am not kidding....
personal security was an issue, we did not feel secure at all...We did not even stay we walked out and found alternative accomodation. We have since taken this up with our travel agent....

Great Bargain

I stayed there for 2 days. I found it to be an excellent hotel as far as 3 star hotels go. Other than the odd broken bathroom tile and the cigarette burns on the carpet, the room was perfect in every way. Everything was sparkly clean, especially the bathroom. The room had everything you could need and 30+ TV channels. The breakfast bar had a wide variety of food and warm/cold drinks and you could eat all you want. Some reviews complained about the staff but everyone I saw was friendly and helpful.
Finding the hotel depends on how good you are with a map, but once there it is extremely easy to find the city center. When going out of the hotel just turn left at the door and walk straight ahead, you will be there in 10 minutes.
On the negative side, the hotel is placed close to some 3 or more hotels. This means that if you get a street facing room you will be getting a fair amount of noise from traffic and passers by ALL NIGHT LONG. The area is also a little scrubby, but it's not as bad as other reviews say.

Newer Again - Avoid!

Below please find a brief summary based on a two-night stay in the hotel in May'05: careless service, average location (a lot less convenient than one might believe based on the info posted on the Web, staff with attitude, dirty blankets, towels with holes, no a/c, 13" tv, no news in English, etc. 3* star rating is a joke, - 2* at best. Even if you are on the budget, I strongly suggest chipping in a few bucks and staying elsewhere. This is especially applicable to travelers from the US.

Basic

from Bri_Joe_2004
The location of the Van Belle Hotel is very good. You take left when you leave the hotel and keep straight for about five minutes until you get to the nearest 'Apotheke' (pharmacy). When you see this, take an immediate right and walk straight ahead for about a minute. There you will find yourself in 'La Grand Place'. This is were it all happens! Give yourself a day and wonder the nearby streets and you will see 90% of the sights of Brussels - some of which are very beautiful. The hotel also provides a direct cab drive into the city centre for free after 1900hrs. There is a tram line three minutes away away. However, this system takes some time to adjust to.
The staff spoke good english and were generally friendly and gave us good advice for our three day trip (ask them how to get to 'Heysel' to see 'Mini Europe' - fun for any age!). However, although they showed seeming concern regarding any problems with the room they did very little.
Be aware that breakfast is not always included in your room total when booking. It cost us €8 per day - a little too expensive but the breakfast (once you rise before 9am) was decent.
This is concidered a three star hotel and it lived up to that. A very basic room with ensuite. There was an extremely musty smell coming from a drain in the bathroom floor, though the shower was new and water always hot. The T.V. had no remote and couldn't be changed manually leaving us with one channel (in French, despite the 'cable T.V.' offer). Three requests were made to have it fixed. It still didn't work when we left.
There was no battery in the room safe, though a secure alternative was provided behind the reception desk.
The beds were very comfortable and the room, though sparce, was extremely well cleaned and clean towels were provided each morning.
The street didn't seem rough though somewhat run down (as is much of the city).
Over all, I would only recommend this if you were travelling on a shoestring'. It was definetly NOT luxurious. It is basic though clean and location is good.

Very spartan

from wmozart5
Room was small and rough even by European standards, some of the staff were stand-offish and almost rude, whereas some of the others were helpful. Not a very good neighborhood, though I never really felt threatened even at night...but then, I'm a 30-year-old male who was travelling alone at the time. I've stayed in MUCH worse neighborhoods in Milwaukee and San Francisco, for example. Still, not a place I'd stay again.

Never Again

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is supposed to be 3-star, well believe me I have stayed in far better. I booked a 3 night stay over easter and on arrival the first thing that greeted me was the stale smell in reception. Our room was very clean the bed was comfortable, I will give credit where due, and the shower and bath were good ie plenty of hot water.
The Hotel decor looks like it was decorated in 1970 and not been touched since!
First morning breakfast I had cereal and then went for toast but was put off as I did not wish to share my breakfast with a cockroach which was in between the jam and marmalade. After that I only had the coffee.
Beware the mosquito's as they quite happily fed on me during the night, and believe me playing"try and kill the mosquito" in the middle of the night when you are tired is not my thing.
The courtesy bus is a good idea and I found the driver who is also barman, waiter etc very friendly, pity the same could not be said for the reception staff who did appear grumpy.
It did not spoil our stay in Brussels however I would recommend spending a little more on a better quality hotel.
The area it is in is run down but we did not have any problem.
I would not stay here again. Beware you have been warned.

Nice hotel in a clumsy area

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Van Belle is a nice hotel if you got a good deal on the price. It is a very clean and interesting hotel from the inside (it is like a maze of interconnected buildings). The breakfast served is 4 stars quality (compared to other 3 stars hotels in Brussels). The area surrounding it is not very pleasant and mostly contains auto shops. It is about 800 meters from the Clemenceau metro station and not very far from the Grand place and Midi train station.

Good value for a short stay.

from CreteTraveller
Road and pavement reconstruction was underway outside the hotel when my daughter and I arrived late evening for a four night stay, and the initial surrounding area did not leave much to be desired. The room, however, was extremely clean with pristine linen, hot radiators and a large bathroom. Reception staff were very helpful and we had a nice meal in the restaurant. A substantial continental breakfast was on offer every morning.
Once we got our bearings in the morning, we decided to walk to the Grand Place and this took about fifteen minutes. We also walked at night and never felt threatened. This Hotel runs a courtesy bus at night to the Grand Place area, and offers free transport to and from The Gare du Midi.
All in all, we felt this hotel was good value for a short stay and, although some people may want to be nearer the attractions, I would not let the location of the Van Belle put me off staying there.

Top Local Tips for Brussels

Stay together Never walk around alone in Brussels. Especially females. The men are sleazy and will not think twice about attacking you

Getting back from Train Station Our first trip back from the Train station took over an hour because we got lost. Our 2nd trip, we picked out several easily identified landmarks that could be seen from the station to guide us back. We got back in 15 minutes.

good food loads of great places to eat
